What is a women’s clinic?
The health of women differs from that of men in many unique ways. Women’s clinics are therefore available to specifically cater to women’s health and offer a range of medical consultations and treatment options.
Women’s clinics focus on obstetrics (OB) which includes all healthcare related to before pregnancy, during pregnancy, childbirth, and immediately after delivery. Gynaecology (GYN) is also covered in women’s clinics and it encompasses all of women’s health issues.
Staffed with a full team of OB/GYN specialists, midwives, and fertility experts, many women’s clinics also offer advanced rehabilitation services and in-depth diagnostics that general practitioners and polyclinics would not be able to provide. Some clinics even extend their range of services to include all aspects of female wellness like diet plans, private counselling on sexual health including preventive care as well as breast care services for breast cancer patients.
Teleconsultations and 24/7 hotlines are also available at some women’s clinics for ease of communication, especially in emergency circumstances or in situations where leaving the house is inconvenient especially after delivering a baby.
With its focus on women’s health, a women’s clinic covers a specialised branch of medical facilities that takes care of treatment and diagnosis of diseases and conditions that affect a women’s physical and emotional well-being.
What services would a women’s clinic provide?
-
General Screenings
Health screenings conducted at women’s clinics are sometimes for preventive care, these include regular gynecological check-ups, including a pelvic exam and breast exam. Pap smears for cervical cancer screening and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) testing are also available for women at such clinics.
Screening for breast cancer is also available and can help in early diagnosis of the disease to ensure treatment is administered in a timely manner. Hormonal testing for menopause for women of age is also conducted at women’s clinics. Screening for sexually-transmitted infections for women can also be done at some women’s clinics.
The importance of general screenings done by women’s clinics cannot be understated – regular pap smears reduce cervical cancer rates by 80%, while yearly mammograms can detect the presence of cancer-causing lumps in its earliest stages. Both screenings are especially important given that cervical cancer is one of the top 10 common cancers in women worldwide, while 1 in 13 women will get breast cancer in their lifetime. Regular screenings help nip the problem in the bud before they worsen and can drastically decrease mortality rate.
-
Vaccinations
As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure. Women’s clinics offer vaccinations against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), certain strains of which can cause cervical cancer, and the HPV vaccine can also guard against other types of cancer that attack the reproductive system.
Women who are planning to have children are especially recommended to get the Hepatitis B vaccine offered by women’s clinics, given that the virus is commonly transmitted from mother to child during delivery.
For Singaporeans/PRs, these vaccinations are covered under the Medisave scheme, a part of governmental efforts to encourage women to look after their reproductive health.
-
Fertility, family planning, and contraception
Addressing fertility issues, family planning as well as prescription of contraceptives are some areas which are covered by a women’s clinic. Couples having difficulty conceiving will greatly benefit from the expertise of a women’s clinic. Diagnosis of infertility issues, as well as treatments both physical and medicinal are offered. In-vitro fertilisation (IVF) is also a common procedure done at such clinics or by fertility specialists
Doctors at women’s clinics can prescribe contraceptives for women, these range from oral contraceptives to injections and the insertion of intrauterine devices (IUD).
-
Pregnancy and post-natal care
Women’s clinics cover a range of antenatal, pregnancy and post-natal services. Breech births, high-risk pregnancies and genetic disorders are just some of the issues seen by obstetricians.
Pregnant mothers can consult doctors at women’s clinics on their birth plan – the mode of delivery, as well as the type of medicinal aid given during birth. Doctors at women’s clinics are specialized in these areas and would be able to advise mothers-to-be on the feasibility of their birth plans. Pro-natural birth mums can even opt for a natural birth, water birth, or a scheduled caesarean section as a mode of delivery. Most women clinics have a full team of specialists that include mid-wives, so pregnant mothers can be put at ease knowing that they are in good hands.
Post-delivery, the teams at women’s clinics will also guide new mothers in recovery and care of their little ones. For women who are concerned about the changes in their figure and appearances, some women’s clinics specialise in skin tightening and body contouring services that will have new mums back to their pre-pregnancy figures in no time.
-
Gynaecological conditions
Other women’s health issues related to puberty and hormonal changes, and can affect women of any age. Those with abnormal menstrual cycles or painful periods can seek treatment at women’s clinics. Since these clinics are already equipped with ultrasound scans, a diagnosis can be given almost immediately. This means that issues like ovarian cysts, fibroids or bladder conditions can be diagnosed early, with treatment started as soon as possible.
For mature ladies, managing menopause is a key concern, and the physical discomforts of menopause like hot flashes, chills and insomnia can also be allayed with treatment advised by doctors.

Choosing the right women’s clinic
-
Research
Choosing the right women’s clinic and OB/GYN is essential in making sure you get the best treatment experience possible. It is best to research the clinic’s or doctor’s specialisations that cater to unique situations such as high-risk pregnancies, and fertility treatments, and this can be done using resources like the SingHealth directory.
Keep in mind a back-up option just in case your initial selection is not the right fit.
-
Availability & Access
For expectant mothers, another central concern would be the after-hours availability of their chosen doctor, as well as the doctor’s access to certain hospitals. For example, some women’s clinics are located within hospitals, making the transition to the actual delivery easier. Some women might also have a personal preference for the hospital they want to deliver in. It is important to ensure your OB/GYN and their team have access to the hospital you have chosen.
Reputable clinics often have their appointment slots booked out, so if you are looking to make a visit should plan ahead of time and schedule your appointments accordingly.
-
Cost
One of the most important factors in choosing a practitioner is the cost. Check out practo, a one stop shop that offers a comprehensive list of OB/GYNs in Singapore. Look for a suitable practitioner within your budget and near your location through the website. Medical consultation fees are also listed upfront, so you can stay within your budget.
If you are covered under an insurance policy, it is best to check which clinics your policy provider works with and make a choice from there.
