What is waxing?
Waxing is a non-permanent procedure to remove excess and unwanted hair. It is a great alternative to shaving as it keeps your skin looking smooth and even. Waxing can be done on any part of the body – either your face, back, arms, legs, or bikini line.
How is waxing done?
A thin layer of wax is first spread over the target skin area. Once the wax is dry, a cloth strip is pressed on top and ripped off swiftly against the direction of hair growth. And yes, it may hurt depending on your pain threshold.
How long does waxing last?
The time taken for hair to regrow after waxing varies between people. However, with repeated waxing, the hair will take anytime between four to six weeks to regrow.

What are the types of wax you can get in salons?
Each salon may offer various types of wax, ranging from the standard cold or hot wax to wax that provides nourishing benefits to your skin such as fruit wax or chocolate wax.
Here are 4 of the commonly used wax types in salons and its targeted area:
Cold wax
When you think of waxing, what comes to mind would probably be hot wax covering your body. However, there are also cold waxing methods that can help to somewhat offset the pain from the procedure.
In the cold waxing method, a semi-solid form of wax is already applied to the strips that will be placed on your skin. The strips will be placed against your skin in a way that is against the growth of the hair.
The advantages of using cold wax is that it is effective from the first session. It is also generally less painful than hot waxing methods, making it ideal for those who have a low pain threshold.
Hot wax
Hot waxing, as its name suggests, involves placing a strip of hot wax directly on the skin before it is being pulled off in the opposite direction of the hair growth.
Hot waxing almost guarantees accurate results, which makes it ideal for removing small areas of hair such as eyebrows.
Soft wax
Soft waxing, also known as strip waxing, is used by spreading a thin layer of warm wax on your body. It is typically applied directly onto your skin using a wooden stick or roller. A thin cloth is then put over it and pulled off, removing hair in the process.
Soft waxing helps to remove thin and fine strands of hair that are almost invisible to the eyes. This waxing method is typically used for large body areas such as legs or arms.
Hard wax
Hard wax is different from soft wax in the sense that it does not require a cloth to remove it. The hard wax is melted and applied directly onto the area where hair needs to be removed. It is given some time to cool and harden before being peeled off by hand.
Hard waxing is ideal for smaller and more sensitive areas including the upper lip, underarms and bikini area. An advantage of hard wax is that it binds to the hair, not to the skin, making it more effective in removing sparse hair strands and less painful.
Benefits of waxing
Waxing has become increasingly popular over the years and for good reasons too.
Improved skin texture
Besides removing excess and unwanted hair, waxing also removes the top layer of dry and dead skin cells. This results in smooth and even skin, something that is difficult to achieve through hair removal cream or shaving.
Some salons even use waxes that include butter or aloe vera to provide moisturizing benefits to the skin and further improve the skin’s tone and texture.
Stubble free skin
Waxing removes all the hair completely from its roots, leaving your skin smooth and stubble free. This is unlike shaving, which cuts hair off at the point where it emerges from the skin. This leaves your skin feeling rough and stubbly as the hair may not be cut off evenly.
Slow hair regrowth
As waxing removes your hair from its roots, it will take a longer time for it to grow back and become noticeable.
Constant waxing may also cause your hair to weaken. As such, some may find that their hair is finer after the regrowth or even stop growing completely after a couple of waxing sessions.
Irritation and allergies-free
Unlike hair removal creams and shaving gels, the wax used for body waxing typically contains minimal chemicals. Very often, waxing will leave you with little redness and rarely does it cause irritation or allergies to your skin.
What to expect from your first waxing session
Before going for your first waxing session, it would be good to exfoliate the target skin area. This helps to remove any dirt that may be stuck in the pores of your skin.
It is also recommended to trim your hair before the session to between ¼ to ½ inch long. Any longer and the hair may risk breaking halfway when it is being waxed off.
On the day of your appointment, it would be good to wear loose clothing so that when you are hair-free, your clothing will not stick or rub onto the exposed area.
Prior to your session, you will be asked to fill in a health questionnaire which will allow you to indicate any allergy or medical condition that you may have. This helps the waxing technician to identify what products they cannot use on you and what to do in case of an emergency.
The waxing technician will then take you into the room for the waxing procedure, where you will be asked to remove the appropriate piece of clothing in order for them to get to where you want to be waxed.
Before starting, the technician will first sanitise the area being waxed. They will then begin the procedure by applying a layer of wax over the target skin area and quickly pull it off your skin, removing hair along with it.
The process will be repeated over the area being waxed until all the hair has been completely removed. Thereafter, the technician will apply a soothing lotion to the waxed area to minimise redness or irritation.
