What is Veganism?
Vegan is a term used to describe diets that exclude meat, all dairy products, eggs and all other ingredients derived from animals. While the exact list of allowed items varies depending on the individual (for example honey), a traditional beef burger for vegans is definitely off the menu.
Why Veganism?

There are a few reasons for making the dietary, or some would argue, lifestyle change which can differ from person to person:
Health benefits
A meatless diet has been shown to promote weight loss, balance blood sugar levels, and may lower risk of heart diseases and certain forms of cancer.
Humane and environmental causes
A vegan lifestyle greatly reduces the amount of animal slaughter and suffering.
Aids the fight on climate change
A study by the United Nations has found the animal agriculture industry’s contribution to the problem at almost 15%. Switching to a plant based diet is a great way to do one’s part for the environment.
Vegan vs Vegetarian
This is a question many of us have asked at some point, especially if we belong to neither group. Simply put, vegans and vegetarians both abstain from meat and fish, but vegans include most if not all animal related products like milk and eggs in the list of foods they do not partake in. Vegetarians on the other hand are free to consume those, so long as they do not eat meat.
Now back to the burger at hand.
Choosing the right place to get your burger fix
With the many options listed above, you might be thinking – “how on earth do I decide on a place to go? Well not to worry, here are some factors to consider in deciding the best place to get that delicious, yet healthy chomp you’ve been craving.
Burger selection
In the pursuit to find a great vegan burger, the burger itself of course must be the first consideration. To decide this, there are a few points to check off –
The patty
The centrepiece of any good burger, the patty is what ultimately defines the burger and the taste. What the patty is made of can determine many things – the taste, the texture, and for those who are very careful about what they eat, the difference between soybean and black beans can make all the difference.
Some places offer well-known patty brands in their burgers such as Beyond Meats, or Impossible Foods. Others come up with their own creations, creative concoctions of ingredients to delight the taste buds while maintaining a meat-free burger. From common bases like soybean or mushroom, to more unique blends such as the lentil quinoa or chickpea and brown rice patty.
The accompaniments
Apart from the patty, the rest of the burger is just as important. The bun, is it toasted or fried? Sourdough or Wholemeal? Then there’s the sauce and toppings. Would you prefer a more traditional base like tomato and lettuce with a BBQ sauce, or something more out of this world like a cashew nut cream cheese or spicy satay?
Chefs are coming up with increasingly complex, yet delectable flavour combinations, some you never thought possible, or even if you did, you never thought of it being put on a patty, between two buns. Some of these creations may shock you, but there’s no doubt there they are utterly, without a doubt, delicious.
Based on your personal preferences, it might be a good idea to read up on the kinds of burgers offered, and decide on your culinary destination after perusing the options available. You don’t want to end up at the restaurant itself and find out the menu isn’t quite suited to your palate after all.
Whether it’s a dietary preference or simply an increasingly acquired taste, the demand for vegan burgers has skyrocketed in the short span of the past few years. More and more eateries are beginning to boast their meatless burgers in one form or another, with brands such as the Impossible™ Burger and Quorn® leading the revolution.
If you haven’t had a bite of this new way to get your burger fix yet, why not check out some of the options below?

Other items on the menu
Apart from the burger itself, you may also want to consider what else the restaurant or cafe may have on its menu. If you’re going to be making the trip down, a burger may not be the only thing you’re having. Some of the places mentioned above have a range of options beyond burgers, for both non-meat eaters and their counterparts. If you’re planning on a visit with friends or family, be sure to pick a place that caters to each specific palate.
Cost
At the end of every meal comes the bill. We may feel fuller after a good meal, but our wallets are definitely going to be feeling the opposite. That’s why the prices of your destination matter greatly as well, when picking a place to eat.
Price ranges of the above options can vary. Some places like the Mezz9 and Black Tap operate around a higher standard of dining, and therefore possess a higher corresponding price tag. On the other hand, you will also be able to find very affordable eats in locales such as Read Food or Nomvnom. Depending on your budget and expectations, do ensure you research the estimated damage to your wallet at the end of the day to avoid an unwelcome surprise after a pleasant meal.
Be on the lookout for special deals
Singapore being a foodie haven, there are always discounts, offers, and promos available for those keen and savvy enough to find them. Make use of the plethora of dining apps like Chope, Eatigo, or Entertainer to source for your cheap eats. Who says dining out has to cost an arm and a leg?
