Review 2 | Reinventing Thai Cuisine Sarai sits in the premises previously occupied by Patara. The interior is completely different. The space has been opened up and lighter wood has been used, giving it an airier, lighter feel than Patara. Private rooms are still available, and these are now set on the side with windows overlooking Tanglin Road. The more modern vibe of the place gels well with the food. First glance at the menu might shock you. Well-known dishes like mango salad, pineapple rice, pandan leaf chicken don’t appear. You sense that this is going to be different. Had a nice refreshing Sweet Tamarind drink to start off. Personally, would have loved it if they had a sour version. For simplicity, took the set dinner. Many of the dishes were bite-sized, like the first dish – a watermelon ball sitting on a bed of toasted coconut and smoked fish in a little edible basket. You get an explosion of different flavours that balance well. This was a consistent concept as I worked my way through all the other bite-sized dishes. Of the dishes that came in larger portions, the green curry beef was a standout. The curry was actually a thick gravy, mild but flavourful. The beef was tender and moist. Really good. The soup was a roasted duck soup. I didn’t know what to expect; it turned out a very flavourful soup. The roasting of the duck must have given it its distinct flavour. Glad of this new discovery rather than yet another tom yum soup. Dessert was taro custard, taro nest and cured starfruit. An ending consistent with the complementary, subtle flavours of all the bite-sized dishes. Highly recommend that you give Sarai a try – opens your mind to the possibilities of Thai food, beyond what we have traditionally come to accept. |
