What is Taekwondo?
When Taekwondo comes to mind, our first impression is that it’s something to do with martial arts. Indeed, Taekwondo is the art of self defence which built its origins in Korea. It is known as one of the oldest forms of martial arts in the world, dating back to 2,000 ancient years ago. Many people may wonder the rationale behind its name. Taekwondo was actually selected for its specific description of the art: Tae (foot), Kwon (hand), Do (art). Also named as Tae Kwon Do, this martial art involves the regular movements of one’s foot and hands – for self defence purposes.
Facts About Taekwondo
Taekwondo is one of the most systematic and valued Korean traditional martial arts. It teaches more than just common physical fighting abilities. Taekwondo is a discipline that shows how one enhances his/her spirituality and mindfulness by training the body and mind. Today, it has become a global phenomenal sport that has gained worldwide reputation and positions itself as an official game in the Olympics.
Besides the art of fighting for self defence purposes, members are ranked according to the different belt colours.
Color Belt Ranks For Taekwondo – different schools can vary.
- No Belt – You start off without a belt and after passing your first belt, you are awarded a white belt subsequently.
- White Belt

History of Taekwondo
Taekwondo has been serving and developing with the 5000-year long history of Korea. Undoubtedly, it was named differently for several times in the course before its final settlement as ‘Taekwondo’. In Korea, Taekwondo began as a self defence martial art, known as “Subak” or “Taekkyon”.
One of the earliest signs of Taekwondo’s existence is a mural painted on the wall of a tomb that was built in the Korean kingdom of Koguryo (between 37 BC and 66 AD). The mural painting clearly shows two unarmed figures facing each other in a Taekwondo style stance. There were also additional drawings in the tomb showing figures performing blocks and wearing uniforms that were used in modern days’ Taekwondo training.
Back in the ancient kingdom of Koguryo, Taekwondo developed as a method of training both body and mind, under the name of “Sunbae.” During the Shilla period, Taekwondo became the backbone of Hwarangdo which aimed at producing the leaders of the country.
The highest form of this ancient martial art was achieved in the kingdom of Silla. This kingdom was small and constantly faced attacks and abuse of power from opposition parties coming from larger and stronger kingdoms. As such, the ruler of the kingdom of Silla, King Jin Heung, implemented an elite group of warriors called the “Hwarang” or “Flower of Youth”.
The “Hwarang” group consisted of the sons of nobles within the kingdom. They were carefully selected and professionally trained in all aspects of military skills including unarmed combat, also known as Tae Kyon. It is important that the “Hwarang” group was taught not only the importance of developing their bodies, but also their state of minds and spirits. Besides learning about fighting strategies, the young warriors were taught about history, poetry, and philosophy. The entire system was known as Hwarang Do / Hwarangdo.
The “Hwarang” gained skills not only for fighting battle, but also for daily life and mental health. This can be related to modern Taekwondo training, which provides self defense skills as well as improved stable character, self-discipline, and self-confidence that can be applied to daily life.
This is part of the reasons why Taekwondo has become such a popular martial arts practice today. As an organized sport with detailed meaningful rules, it has developed as a martial art that’s deeply rooted in Korean culture and global influence. Taekwondo today is just the same as the martial arts in other oriental countries; sharing similar features with them.

I’ve known Master Kang for a long time. He was one of the top demonstration team member. What I love about him is leadership. As martial arts instructor, you are on display every single class. Kids will look at teacher and learn from them. He is perfect example for that. I am so proud of him. I have no doubt to say you are lucky to training martial arts under master kang’s studio. – Master Y Kim |

Master David and Master Ann are really patient with the kids class. My 4yo took a while to settle in but he absolutely loves going for his Taekwondo class and adores both masters. Thank you Gaonhae! – Eugenia Ye Yeo |
Review 3 |
My 9 year old boy attends this dojo. He has Aspergers Syndrome and watching Master David interact with him brings tears to my eyes. Master David is kind and patient and instinctively senses when my son is becoming overwhelmed and changes the intensity of the lessons appropriately. He is encouraging but at the same time, ensures that my son is performing the moves correctly. Headmaster Kang and Master Ann are also fantastic with him. Watching the other children training, their movements are strong and precise but you can see in their faces that they’re having fun and look up to the Masters. We are lucky to have this dojo so close to where we live. I highly recommend it to anyone. – Laura C |
Uprising Trends of Taekwondo Classes
Taekwondo is a traditional well-respected Korean martial art that’s been increasing in popularity across Asia and Europe. Taekwondo is known for its full gear of punching and kicking techniques, which distinguishes itself from other martial arts such as karate or certain styles of Kung Fu.
The development of Taekwondo and its techniques slowly improved as Korea progressively developed itself. There are many historical examples of Taekwondo training in different ways – all the ancient records of the different kingdoms that existed within the country throughout the centuries.
The rise of Taekwondo initially started virtually as an unknown South Korean sport in the early 70s to a popular and phenomenal Olympic sport today. The rise in popularity for Taekwondo has certainly brought in a lot more revenue for the country. Once an organization/company is associated with World Taekwondo Federation, there are certainly more deals such as Olympic to be made.
Costs of Taekwondo Classes
Before you are intrigued to join Taekwondo classes in Singapore, it is important to research on the fees and be financially prepared. Based on online findings, we have generated an estimated fee from Grades 10 to 6th Dan (as shown on the table below):
Grades 10 to 2 | $25.00 |
Grade 1 | $100.00 |
1st Dan | $150.00 |
2nd Dan | $200.00 |
3rd Dan | $250.00 |
4th Dan | $300.00 |
5th Dan | $350.00 |
6th Dan | $400.00 |
As a general rule of thumb, you can expect to pay for classes that cost between $25 – $400 per month (sometimes even higher than that). Bear in mind that it does not include other miscellaneous fees such as uniform costs, sparring gear and grading fees. The general price also depends on the location and reputation of company.
What To Expect in Taekwondo Classes
You are probably excited for the first day of Taekwondo class and want to know what to expect.
First of all, know that you will be learning a few basic self defence methods such as kicks, blocks, strikes, grabs, releases, and some endurance training.
Taekwondo is good for anyone’s health so even if you’re not in the best shape right now, it is fine. It is a lifestyle sport and you will not be good at it for the first time, as these kicks definitely take a lot of practice to be perfect. There are a few things to take note of:
- You’ll be doing warm ups, calisthenics, punches, and kick drills. Other physical fitness activities include things like push-ups, sit-ups, and various other strengthening exercises.
- Building muscle memory is important. It helps to develop form, balanced footwork, and coordinate your body and mind.
- You’ll learn how to block and throw punches and kicks, choke somebody out, and how to be prepared for an attack.
- You’ll learn how to do sparring exercises (prearranged punches and kicks).
- For the category of kids, you will first learn by playing with Taekwondo games.
- For the category of adults, you’ll be doing strenuous training – probably getting an aerobic and anaerobic workout.
- Sometimes, you can expect to learn the historical aspect of Taekwondo and other martial arts.
