Not sure where or how to start in designing your t-shirt? Here are some suggestions to help kickstart your t-shirt design process:

Text or slogan designs

You can use a single word text or perhaps a slogan in your t-shirt design. It could be something as simple as “Strength” or “Power” or any word that encapsulates the message you intend to project.

Alternatively, you can also use short text slogans such as, “Save The Earth” or “Knowledge Is Power”. Such minimalist t-shirt designs are usually embroidered or printed using silkscreen printing. 

Digital artwork

Digital artwork t-shirt designs are highly popular these days due to the availability of artwork design software such as Adobe Photoshop and Inkscape. Whether you are a budding creative designer, animator or cartoonist, you can easily transfer your unique art creations onto a t-shirt and wear it out proudly!

Paintings or photographs

Cheesy as it may seem, some people prefer to commemorate a special occasion or people by using their own photographs or their own drawings. The most common method of printing such a t-shirt design is using Digital Heat Transfer Printing. This helps to retain the original colours of the painting or picture when it is being printed onto the t-shirt. 

Are any tips to ensure a good t-shirt design?

While you may have the perfect t-shirt design on hand, it will all come to naught if it is not well printed on your t-shirt.

Use high quality image files

The is one of the key factors that will affect how your design turns out when printed on a t-shirt. Regardless of how fanciful your t-shirt design may look online, pictures or designs that are of low quality and resolution may not be crisp enough to be printed and may turn out highly pixelated when printed on the t-shirt.

As a rule of thumb, ensure that your artwork or graphics is at least 300 dots per inch (DPI). While most high quality images tend to take up a lot of disk space, you may compressed your image size but always use PNG or JPEG file formats 

Ensure an appropriate placement of your t-shirt design

The placement of your design or artwork on the t-shirt is equally important as well. A design that is placed too high near the collar, or too low near the belly may end up looking odd. Ideally, you will want your t-shirt design to be located somewhere around your chest area. 

However, if you are familiar with t-shirt design and printing, there is no harm trying out a whacky t-shirt design such as printing on both the front and back of your shirt.

Focus on your fonts and colour scheme

When designing your t-shirt, be aware of the font type and colour scheme particularly if you are planning to print a word or slogan. For example, if you intend to print the word “Earth”, using colours blue and green may be more appropriate as opposed to red and yellow. 

If you are unsure on which colour scheme is appropriate for your t-shirt design or how it may appear on a coloured t-shirt, always seek a second opinion with the t-shirt design store. Some of these stores offer an online designer lab, providing a virtual visualisation of how your design will look like when printed on the t-shirt.
