By the time you have read this sentence, 162 barrels of oil would have been burned to keep Singapore alive and thriving. In just 24 hours, we would have consumed up to 1.4 million barrels of oil. For a country our size, that is a lot of resources being channeled towards keeping us going daily. With the limited resources that we own, sustainability is a rising concern.
What is Sustainability?
Sustainability refers to a state of being, that allows us to consume the resources that we need, while maintaining the integrity of resources available for future generations to consume comfortably as well. It is a long term goal that we all hope to achieve as a human race through sustainable development. Sustainability dictates that we exist in harmony with the ecosystems that surround us and to live without jeopardizing their survival and wellbeing.
3 Pillars of Sustainability
If you were to conduct research on the themes of sustainable development, you will find the 3 pillars of sustainability. These pillars set the guidelines for the sustainable development of any nation. They are as follows:
The First Pillar: Economic Development
Sustainable economic development refers to economic activity where profit making does not impinge on the quality of people’s lives as well as the state of the environment. Sustainable economic development calls for sustainable business practices. It is about offering incentives to businesses to encourage them to abide by sustainability guidelines, ensuring that they use their country’s resources responsibly and efficiently. Sustainable economic development may also include large scale decisions such as turning away pollutive industries from your country.
The Second Pillar: Social Development
The social aspect of sustainability involves ensuring that people of any community achieve social wellbeing. This includes focusing on issues such as education, job security, food security, housing and safety. Sustainable social development ensures that while economic development and profit making takes place, no citizen is left behind and everyone is given the opportunity to achieve a meaningful life.
The Third Pillar: Environmental Protection
The true meaning of environmental sustainability focuses on finding a means of living that ensures that we do not damage the ecosystems that surround us or bring harm to the lives of animal species. Environmental sustainability can be achieved by implementing measures that monitor the rate of pollution and resource use. The rate of pollution should not exceed the environment’s ability to assimilate the waste we produce. Which means we should not inflict damage on the Earth at a rate where it cannot heal itself naturally. With regards to the use of renewable resources, the rate at which we deplete them must not exceed the rate at which they regenerate. These are the most basic guidelines to achieve environmental stability in a society, but the list is not exhaustive and there is no limit to what we can do to help the environment.

DP Sustainable Design |
Speciality |
At the core of the company, the work goal of DPSD is straightforward: To deliver holistic and innovative sustainable design solutions that are environmentally, socially and economically responsive to local climatic conditions, site context and needs of the end-users. However, the DPSD green design process is not simply about green certification or harvesting renewable energy. It is about getting design fundamentals right from the outset of a project and optimising these through detailed design. And doing so requires a pragmatic way of designing that is steered by an integrated, iterative approach; supported by an evidence base of intelligent simulations and empirical data. This enables the team to ensure that the development of the green building system goes hand in hand with the overall concept design of the building. |

A Sustainable Singapore
Singapore has dedicated time and effort into developing several sustainability measures that adhere by the guidelines set by the 3 pillars of sustainability. Singapore boasts a number of unique solutions to our sustainability problems despite our small size and limited resources. Here are some of Singapore’s best sustainability efforts:
Global Hydro Hub
In the past few years Singapore has been increasing its attention to our water crisis. Surrounded by seawater, fresh drinkable water is a limited and scarce resource not to be taken for granted. With the use of reservoirs, desalination plants and imported water, access to fresh water has been made available to all of us. However, it is still important to continue to ensure that our water supply is secure for the future.
As a global “HydroHub”, Singapore has over 180 water companies working together to ensure a sustainable water supply for all Singaporeans, present and future. Singapore has also invested heavily in building research and development centres that helm projects that contribute to our water sustainability.
One such project is the NEWater initiative. From educational excursions to their research facilities in primary schools to NEWater bottles in our National Day Parade goodie bags, NEWater is a project that we are all familiar with. NEWater is treated and purified reclaimed water. This initiative is a prime example of how Singapore ensures water sustainability by reducing waste water and reusing as much of our clean water supply as possible. Not only does NEWater help to guarantee a steady water supply for Singapore, it also reduces the amount of waste water entering and polluting the ocean, making it an environmentally sustainable solution as well.
Zero Waste Plan
It is estimated that by the year 2035, our landfill, Pulau Semakau will run out of space. The only way to salvage this situation and to increase the lifespan of Pulau Semakau is to reduce the amount of waste we produce as a nation. Singapore has crafted a Zero Waste Master Plan that targets reducing the amount of waste sent to Pulau Semakau per capita per day by 30 percent by 2030. This plan also aims to achieve an overall recycling rate of at least 70 percent.
The Zero Waste Master Plan includes the Resource Sustainability Act which mandates that large companies who produce excessive amounts of waste have to make the change and increase their recycling and reusing efforts.
The idea of recycling and reusing is not only limited to the way we treat waste materials. Pulau Semakau itself is an excellent example of sustainable environmental development facilitated by recycling and reusing. Our landfill has been converted into a wildlife conserve and provides a home for more than 700 endangered species of animals and plants. Despite being a place where waste is processed, Pulau Semakau has a thriving ecosystem.
SkillsFuture
Singapore has not limited its sustainability efforts to environmental conservation. We have taken measures to ensure sustainable social development as well. The SkillsFuture initiative is a perfect example of how Singapore ensures sustainable development for its people. The SkillsFuture initiative is about cultivating a habit of life-long learning. Since our people are our best resource, due to our lack of natural resources, it is crucial to ensure that Singaporeans of all ages and walks of life are equipped with the relevant skills needed to thrive in today’s economy and climate.
