Jogging, cycling, swimming, and even dancing are some of the most common cardio exercises that we know of. These activities are known to get your heart pumping and allows you to burn some calories at the same time. But there’s a new cardio workout in town that’s taking the world by storm — spin classes.
What is a spin class?
Spin class or spinning classes is essentially a high-intensity cycling workout that takes place on a stationary bike with weight flywheels that are linked to the pedals. While most classes don’t typically use any additional equipment besides the bike itself, there are some gyms that add weights to the mix to work out your arms at the same time. Class sizes vary from studio to studio, but there are gyms who have up to 40 people in one class.
Typically, spin classes are held in studios, gyms, and fitness centres. But due to the ever-evolving nature of the sport, there are certain gyms and fitness studios who have modified this experience and taken spin classes outdoors and even in the water.

Athlete Lab Singapore |
Specialty |
Rather than cycling ‘old school’ flywheel bikes that most other spin studios offer, Athlete Lab uses real road bikes that sit on rollers and record your data in real-time. According to co-owner Michael Flynn, the flywheel distorts the pedal stroke action and engages different muscle groups than when you cycle on a real road bike. Their indoor cycling classes vary in their intensities from sprints, to endurance training, to hill intervals, and so much more. |

Benefits of taking a spin class
Improve overall cardiovascular health
Just like other forms of cardio, spin classes are a great way to improve your cardiovascular health. The repetitive contractions of large muscle groups in the body are what keeps the heart beating faster, which equates to a happier and healthier heart!
At the same time, these workouts also promote weight loss, muscle endurance, and strength.
Work out your upper body and core
Besides working on your legs, glutes and hamstrings, spin classes actually work your core and upper body more than you think. In each class, you’ll need your upper body strength to support yourself on the bike and your core to keep your balance at all times. As mentioned earlier, some classes even incorporate arm workouts with resistance bands and lightweight dumbbells to elevate the intensity of the workout even more.
Train your hamstrings and lower legs
Quite evidently, the areas that will be trained and used the most in a spin class would have to be your lower legs and hamstrings. You won’t just be sitting on your stationary bike during the whole duration of the class. In fact, there will be times throughout the workout where you will have to stand up from your seat, increase the resistance on your bike, and even do an incline. You’ll definitely be leaving that class with jelly legs! But that’s how you know that it is working.
Develop your mental strength
Believe it or not, cardio exercises like spin classes are a great way to develop one’s mental strength. Studies have shown that exercises that combine aerobics and strength training are the most effective in strengthening a person’s mental health and resilience. Physical activities such as this require us to mentally push ourselves to the finish line and will allow us to build confidence not just in our fitness journey but in other areas of our lives as well.
How is a spin class different?
Many have asked, “why should I go to a spin class when I can get on a stationary bike instead?”. While the activity in itself is basically the same thing, spin classes have certain aspects in it that you cannot get from merely exercising by yourself on a stationary bike.
A sense of camaraderie
The concept of group exercise has proven to boost morale in many fitness classes and gyms. The energy and enthusiasm from your fellow attendees will encourage you to finish what you started, and even boost your confidence while you are at it. In a class setting, you will also be able to feed off of each person’s energy in the room, which then creates this overall sense of camaraderie amongst everyone in the class. While anyone can be self-motivating when exercising on their own, it definitely does not compare to the energy and environment in a class setting.
The ambience and the music
Many spin studios today have taken on a more modern aesthetic and feel to their spaces that have attracted many newcomers. You enter a dark room filled with colourful flashing lights and heart-pumping music that will surely get you motivated and your adrenaline pumping. A lot of the music that they play in spin classes are heavy on the bass, which allows students to follow the beat and pace more accurately.
Do I need to have prior experience to join a spin class?
The great thing about these classes is that they are suitable for both beginners and professionals alike. However, since these are still high-intensity workouts at the end of the day, it is important to listen to your body at all times. Due to the class size and setting, there may be that pressure to keep up with everyone else and the pace that they are on. But it is important to not push yourself and your body too hard in order to prevent potential injuries.
Similarly, if you also have pre-existing medical conditions or injuries, please consult with your doctor first or even with your instructor if you are suitable to take the class.
