Speech and communication are important parts of our daily lives. It allows us to make connections, form decisions and thoughts and allow us to progress in different aspects of our lives.

But what happens when you have trouble communicating due to speech impediments?

What is speech therapy?

Speech therapy, or speech-language therapy, involves the treatment and management of various speech disorders that affect a person’s ability to communicate, speak, and even the way they consume food and drink. Speech therapy doesn’t only treat conditions that directly affect one’s speech, but it also helps to improve language development and pragmatic language skills.

How does it work?

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all treatment for speech disorders. The type of treatment received by patients is largely dependent on the severity of their condition and its cause. But generally, speech therapy would typically consist of speech therapy exercise that is geared towards developing familiarity with specific sounds and words, and physical exercises that will strengthen the oral muscles to produce speech sounds.

Speech therapy is meant to work on your physical and cognitive functions simultaneously, in order to communicate effectively and efficiently.

Some of the common treatment options for speech disorders include contrast therapy, oral-motor therapy, target selection, and contextual utilisation that can be complemented with medication as well.

Common speech disorders that can be treated through speech therapy

Stuttering

Stuttering, sometimes known as stammering can have different severities that vary from person to person. This speech disorder involves a disruption in one’s flow of speech by involuntary pauses, blocks and repetitions and the prolonging of certain words, syllables and sounds.

Many may think that stuttering is normal for those nervous during presentations or before going in front of a large crowd to give a grand speech, but this begins to become a problem when you start to experience difficulty in your daily activities.

Apraxia

This is one of the most known speech disorders and is common among children. Unlike stuttering, where one knows exactly what they want to say but has difficulty articulating the words in completion, Apraxia causes the neural pathway between the brain and a person’s speech muscles to be lost or blocked.

This means that people suffering from Apraxia may know what to say in their brains and may even be able to write it on paper, but their brain is unable to send those messages to the speech muscles entirely.

Dysarthria

Dysarthria is commonly known as a brain-injury related speech disorder that occurs when the muscles around the lips, mouth, tongue and jaws are too weak to properly mouth and form words. This is commonly caused by muscle or nerve damage in the mouth area. People of all ages can suffer from this speech disorder.

For children, it can develop as early as still being in the mother’s womb whereas adults and elderly persons may experience dysarthria caused by a stroke or tumour. One way to spot someone with dysarthria is through their slurred and slowed speech, with limited jaw or lip movement.

Lisping

Having a lisp is usually noticeable during the early stages of a person’s development due to the inability to pronounce consonants that contain the letter “s”. While there are several types of lisps, the inability to pronounce words with “s” is the most common.

Even though they seem like a relatively simple and common speech disorder, lisp impediments are actually rather complex Most lisps are caused by wrong tongue placements in the mouth, which causes the distortion of words due to the obstruction of airflow from inside the mouth.

Speech delay

Better known as Alalia to medical professionals and speech therapists, speech delay is usually experienced amongst children and happens when a child is not making any attempts to communicate verbally. Generally, children should be able to start speaking between 10 to 15 months and begin to increase their number of words as they get older.

Speech or language delays are often caused by oral impairments and even hearing problems. If your child has not spoken at the age of two years old, it is best to consult with a doctor immediately.

Beyond more complex speech disorders, speech therapy can also treat milder conditions such as fluency, articulation, voice, or oral feeding problems as well.

Who can suffer from these conditions?

Children

Depending on the parents’ preferences, their child may attend speech therapy sessions in a classroom or small group setting, or even a one-on-one session. Some of the factors that will be taken into consideration when formulating speech therapy exercises include age, needs, and the disorder itself.

During speech therapy, the speech-language pathologist (SLP) may interact with your child through talk and play using books and other objects to stimulate language development; model correct sounds for the child to imitate and follow; and provide strategies and homework for the child to do and practice at home.

Adults

While child therapy is most common for children, adult speech impairment is also a very real condition. To begin with, adults are also assessed to determine their needs and which treatment is most suitable for their condition.

Speech therapy for adults may involve problem-solving, memory work to improve cognitive-communication; mouth exercises to strengthen the oral muscles, and conversational strategies to improve social communication.

Benefits of speech therapy and the results you can expect

From various studies over the past years, speech therapy has shown significant results. It can improve communication in the brain and the body; develop fluency; better the coordination of your speech muscles; enhance the learning of a certain language, and improve your overall verbal communication.
