Shopping malls are the miracle story of the 21st century.
With the rise of e-commerce, why’s there still a mall within a 15-minutes car ride everywhere around this island? Instead of tearing down old ones, why are most of them undergoing a facelift instead?
Most importantly, why do we continue to show up at the malls almost every weekend (and probably weeknights)?
While online shopping may offer the convenience of getting your stuff, there are definitely amenities and experiences malls provide that will be irreplaceable.
According to a Straits Times article, shopping malls evolving according to our needs. Take a look at Jewel Changi Airport. Some experiences are best savoured at the malls
Imagine eating your favourite ramen in a Tupperware, facing the 4 familiar walls of your room. How about drinking your Guinness Stout from a can instead of a tap?
Actually we don’t have to imagine. We are already living that life during this circuit breaker period. Loving it much? Seriously.
Yes. Online streaming this. Netflix that. Yet, nothing beats watching your favourite blockbuster in the comfort of a state-of-the-art theatre with surround sound, minus the distracting tabs on your Chrome.
There’s more transparency when you buy stuff offline
Sure. You see that nice dress on TaoBao. But how do you know it’s going to fit you, just because someone known as funkygirl_88 types so?
It could be a result of good photography and lighting. Perhaps it’s a result of good editing. Perhaps it’s a result of hiring writers like me to sprinkle flower petals and scent around the description.
You never know if a dress fits you until you try it on.
Mall provides a space where we can gather and socialise.
Hmm…what shall we do this weekend? Watch a movie? Karaoke? Yoga? Zumba? Paintball? Art jam?
Argh! The paradox of choice!
When such cognitive warfare happens amongst our friend circle, there’s a 97.3462352253% chance that we’ll end up in a shopping mall.
There’s air-conditioning, which is near survival-like vital. There’s also a range of shopping, dining and entertaining options.
While we wait for a consensus on the next activity to do, we’ll most likely end up in a café or the food court. Even if we’re tired of making a decision, many of us are quite comfortable with just staying put to talk cock and chill.
If all things fail, I’m sure there’s a cinema somewhere on the very top or very bottom level.

Located at the intersection of the Singapore River and the city core, Singapore has created a hospitality and entertainment district that is a must see for any visit. Fine dining, entertainment is available, from Violet Oon to River Cruises. The entire district features shops, restaurants and bars connected by covered pedestrian walkways. The ceiling is very distinct. The umbrella translucent structures double to provide some protection against sun and rain and serves as the backdrop for a multi-coloured light show once the sun goes down. It is a thriving entertainment district. Clark Quay is known as the clubbing/ drinking heaven for most of the people around Singapore. Along the riverside by one could simply sit back and watch the shophouses. The Night scene of Clarke Quay along the riverside stuns and is vaguely romantic, intimate. Clarke Quay is eclectic and touristy, with all the bars/food outlets and river tours, but at night it is magical. By night, lights blaze brightly, bars, restaurants and live bands bring the stretch alive.

It is connected to many hotels with 3 level and 2 basements. Mothercare is popular. There is even a Mindchamp’s Daycare and the booth to buy tickets for the Ducktours. Other attractions are a short distance to the Mall, including the Marina Bay Sands Hotel and the Helix bridge. The Cook Market houses a wide range of restaurants at great prices. Japanese supermarket and Japanese food street are distinct, charming. The food courts offer variants of local food from Chinese, Korean, Japan, Indian and Indonesian.

On the top floor is Food Republic Food Court which has a variety of International/Local cuisine to suit your taste buds. At the basement, there is also great, affordable food. It is above the busy Somerset MRT Station so you can expect traffic is always heavy. On the ground floors you have major brands like Zara etc, and outlets to purchase coffee, juice, noodles. As you start moving up the floors, some of the shops get a little more niche, boutique. A main draw is the Uniqlo Flagship Store. One can visit Orchard Library close by. The sky garden playground for the kids to explore. It has a playground suitable from 3-6 years. Lower budget yet decent eats can be found in Basement 3, Marche Movenpick is on the ground floor. Huge Zara Shop, Forever 21 shop in house. Sony is an anchor tenant. At the Fish Spa, Fish nibble at your feet. Just across is the informative Singapore Tourist information Centre.
