Importance of investing in a good pair of footwear
Whether it is 10 steps or 10,000 steps a day, almost everyone walks from one point to another. Shoes help to provide comfort and support for your feet and ankles while walking. It also protects our feet from germs and elements on the ground.
Besides the functional benefits, a simple pair of shoes has now turned into an object for self expression and identity. Owning a good pair of quality shoes can provide both comfort and an effortless way to compliment your look.
Here are some reasons why it is important to invest in a good pair of shoes:
Prevent foot problems
Ill fitting shoes can cause ingrown toenails, bunions and prolonged wear of such shoes can sometimes lead to deformities. A good pair of shoes can help to cushion your feet and protect your joints. This is especially crucial when doing sports as it minimises the impact on your joints and reduces the likelihood of injuring yourself.
Helps to maintain a proper posture
Your feet serve as a foundation for your entire body and health. Lack of proper foot support can cause serious misalignments to your spine which may lead to back and foot pain. Properly fitted shoes can help to provide the necessary support for your feet and helps to maintain a healthy posture as you stand or walk about.
Fashion statement
Finding a comfortable pair of shoes is important, but finding a great pair of shoes can help boost your confidence in any situation. It can help to elongate your legs or easily switch your look from casual to smart and vice versa.

How to choose the right pair of shoes
Poorly designed shoes are one of the major causes of foot problems. Investing in quality footwear can help to prevent injuries and potential health issues in the future.
These are some tips to consider when shopping for shoes:
Proper fit
As brands may manufacture sizes slightly differently, don’t rely on previous shoe sizes. Give the shoes a try to ensure they fit you correctly before buying. Make sure your toes have enough room to splay out at the front of the shoe when you put weight on it while walking.
Often no two feet are perfect or of equal size. It is common for one feet to be larger than the other. In such cases, opt for the size that fits the larger foot. If you have flat feet, it is recommended to buy shoes with a wide fit and arch support. This helps to relieve pressure on the arch and prevents discomfort.
Features and function
There are many types of shoes designed for different situations. Choosing the right kind of shoes with the appropriate function can help prevent injuries and make the wear more enjoyable.
For instance, as running has more impact with each step than walking, running shoes are typically equipped with cushioning and are made with breathable materials. Whereas for walking, your feet are on the ground longer and there is more weight distributed throughout your heels to toes. Hence walking shoes usually have more cushions around the shoes and are not as flexible for running.
Quality
A higher price tag doesn’t always equate to better quality. Leather or suede shoes usually costs more but tends to last longer compared to other types of shoes. However, if your feet sweats easily, opt for a more breathable material to reduce risks of fungal infection or foot odour.
How to maintain the quality of your shoes
Clean and well-maintained shoes can last longer and help to make the most out of your money. Keeping your shoes clean not only plays a huge role in your overall appearance, it also helps to maintain your hygiene standards and health.
If your feet tend to sweat easily, it is crucial to clean your shoes frequently to keep those bad odours away. Dirt on your shoe soles can also increase the risk of collecting and transmitting germs. Leaving mud on your shoes damages the material of the shoes and increases wear and tear.
These are some essential tips on how to properly care for your shoes:
Leather shoes
Just like your skin, leather requires moisture to maintain its elasticity or it will start to dry out and crack. All you require is a few minutes a month for cleaning to extend the condition of your favorite leather shoes or boots by a few years.
First you will need to remove the layers of dust and dirt with a brush. Then use a separate brush or cloth to apply your conditioner or polish to add that layer of moisture and shine. Wait for a few minutes to let the shoe dry before using a cloth to wipe off any excess conditioner or polish.
Cloth or fabric shoes
Unless stated on the care label, you should avoid throwing your favourite white sneakers into the washer. Washing machines can damage the shape and glue, making it easier for your shoes to fall apart. It is recommended to clean your cloth or fabric shoes by hand.
Start off by wiping the fabric with a dry paper towel to remove any dirt or soil on the surface. Prepare a bowl with 1 teaspoon of dishwashing detergent and 2 cups of warm water. Using an old toothbrush, lightly scrub the fabric with the soapy mixture. With a clean paper towel, moisten with clear water and wipe the entire shoe to remove any soapy residue. Finish off by using a dry paper towel to blot dry the surface and air dry the shoes away from direct heat and sunlight.
Cork sole shoes
Cork shoes are usually softer and does not absorb moisture easily, making it suitable for providing proper foot support while preventing formation of odours. However, the longevity of your shoes not only relies on quality materials, it also requires proper care. The major plus point about cork shoes is that they are very durable and require very simple maintenance.
To make the cleaning solution, mix 8 cups of warm water, half a cup of white vinegar and 5 drops of mild detergent. Dampen the rag or brush with the solution and gently scrub the areas in circular motion. Avoid scrubbing with too much force as you may risk breaking the cork. End off the cleaning with a final scrub using clean warm water and let them out to air dry.
