Ever wondered how it felt to be in Finding Nemo or part of a National Geographic crew, exploring the deep blue seas and swimming alongside schools of fishes? You can experience these exciting underwater encounters through scuba diving!
What is scuba diving?
This underwater adventure sport allows one to explore greater depths of the sea with the help of scuba equipment. Also known as a self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA), it enables divers to breathe underwater for extended periods of time.

Getting started with Scuba Diving
Before you learn scuba diving, you will need to ensure that you meet the following prerequisites:
Age
To enroll into a Scuba Diving course, most diving organisations will require you to be at least 10 years of age. Divers are only allowed to dive to a certain limit and must be accompanied by a professional diver during the dives.
Currently, there is no maximum age limit for scuba diving. As long as you’re up for it, don’t let age hinder your decisions. You are never too old to start embarking on your underwater adventure!
Physical health
Contrary to general belief, scuba diving is not a physically demanding activity. Unlike swimming, you do not rely on your arms but mainly slow kicks of your fins to move around, hence using less energy.
However, underlying health conditions and poor physical health may pose significantly more risks for divers. Before any dives, it is important to get a detailed medical check-up and consult your doctor beforehand to ensure that you are fit to dive.
Buoyancy
Some organisations may require students to be able to float or thread in water for at least 10 minutes. As scuba diving requires the kicking style, similar to freestyle kicking, a swimmer may likely be able to learn this quickly. While it is not necessary for a diver to know how to swim, having prior swimming knowledge may be an advantage.
Types of Scuba Diving certifications
These are some of the diving certifications you can attain:
Open Water
If you never dived before, the open water certification is the most basic entry level diving certification. The training will typically take about three full days. During the session, divers will learn the essential scuba diving skills such as the diving environment, scuba equipment, hand signals and dive safety.
To complete the course, divers will have to undergo formal training which involves:
- 1 Theory class
- 1 Pool session
- 4 Open water scuba dives
Advanced Open Water
The next step after achieving your Open Water certification is the Advanced Open Water Course. In this course, you will develop your existing underwater skills and be introduced to new speciality courses. Out of the list of specialty dives, Deep Diving and Underwater Navigation, are mandatory for divers to complete in order to get the Advanced Open Water certification.
The primary reason in getting this certification is to expand your dive limit. With up to 30 meters of dive limit, this will unlock more dive site options for you to explore.
Specialty Courses
After achieving your Advanced Open Water Course, there are several more programs you can complete to further enhance your diving skills. Some of the common speciality diving courses you can attain are:
- Master Scuba Diver
- Wreck Diver
- Underwater Navigator
- Search and Recovery Diver
- Equipment Specialist
Scuba Diving awarding bodies
There are various diving organisations around the world that award diving certifications. Some of the more widely recognised diving certification bodies in Singapore are:
- Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI)
- Scuba School International (SSI)
- Scuba Diving International (SDI)
Things to consider before signing up for a Scuba Diving certification
Below are some considerations for you to ponder over before taking up a Scuba Diving Certification:
Cost
Attaining a diving certification in a Singapore diving school can easily set you back at least $600. While you can organise your own dive trip, selecting the packages can help avoid the hassle of managing the booking and arrangement of transport, accommodation and diving schedule.
The scuba diving packages offered typically include theory and pool lessons, equipment rental, transport, instructor fees and certification. Additional items such as insurance, mask and fins rental, marine park fees and accomodation may be excluded from the fees. Do ensure that you check with the dive centres on the offers available before signing up with them.
Comfort level in water
Before you venture out into the ocean, it is crucial that you feel comfortable in water. Try snorkelling, if you are unsure, to get a sense of your comfort level.
Given that you will be submerged at least 10 metres underwater, it is better to be upfront if you are feeling nervous. Knowing your limits and fears can help to take the stress away. Most importantly, it can also help to avoid placing yourself in dangerous situations.
Time commitment
As you are usually only allowed to dive up to 3 training dives in 1 day, the 4 open water dives will need to be done over at least 2 days. The coursework and pool sessions can be done in a few hours or within the day.
The scuba diving course can be done at your own pace and it typically takes between 4 days to a week to complete. If you are planning to travel out of Singapore for your Open Water dive, do ensure that you schedule ample time for the dive trip, including rest days, so that you can make the most out of your scuba diving experience.
Popular scuba diving sites around and in Singapore
Keen to embark on your dive trip? There are plenty of beautiful diving sites available in Southeast Asia! However, do ensure that you wait at least 12 to 18 hours after your last dive before boarding the plane to avoid decompression sickness. Some of these popular scuba diving sites around Singapore are:
- Raja Ampat, Indonesia
- Sipadan Island, Malaysia
- Malapascua, Philippines
- Similan Islands, Thailand
For a fuss free trip, you can consider diving in Singapore. Here are a list of scuba diving spots in Singapore:
- Kusu Island
- Pulau Hantu
- Pulau Jong
- Sisters’ Island Marine Park
