What is pole dancing?
Pole dance is both an art form and a sport and has become one of the fastest-growing fitness trends all over the world. This form of dance essentially combines both acrobatics and dance together with the help of a vertical pole.
The pole is the main instrument or ‘star’ of the show. Through practice and training, pole dancers can perform tricks on the pole such as spins, poses, and even slides. It may look like just fun and games, but it actually requires musicality and a lot of physical strength and endurance.

Benefits of pole dancing
It burns calories quickly
If you’re looking for an intense calorie burner, you should definitely give pole dancing a try. Since you’ll be using all the muscles in your body and will always be moving, you will burn calories quicker than most physical activities. Did you know that pole dancing can burn the same amount of calories as a 30-minute callisthenics or aerobics session?
It targets your entire body
Unlike working out at the gym, where you can pick which part of your body to work out, pole dancing targets all the areas of your body from the arms, core, down to your legs, making it the ultimate full-body workout. Since it combines so many different exercises, you don’t have to focus on one specific part of your body. With more practice and training, pole dancing will leave you with a toned and strong physique.
It makes your bones and joints stronger
Unlike other cardio activities like running or skipping rope that puts a lot of stress on your joints, pole dancing is actually the opposite and is far safer for your bones. Since you will be using most of your muscle strength from your core and arms, you don’t need to place a great amount of pressure on your joints. This can significantly reduce your risk of developing strain injuries and even osteoporosis.
It improves your heart health and blood flow
Since this is also a cardiovascular exercise, your overall heart health will also improve significantly. In just four minutes of being on the pole and performing different stunts and spins, you’ll notice your heart rate increase and your stamina will improve as well.
It boosts your confidence
Since pole dancing requires you to wear minimal clothing to maximise the friction between your skin to the pole, you may feel uncomfortable exposing your skin in the beginning. But over time, you’ll definitely develop body confidence and finally, be comfortable in your own skin. As your body changes through each practice session, you’ll feel stronger, have toned muscles, and will become less fatigued as well. Let that confidence ooze from the inside out!
How to prepare for a pole dance class
What to wear
Ditch the full-length yoga pants and leggings because that will be of no good use for you at a pole dance class. You often see people in pole dance classes wearing bike or yoga shorts and this is compulsory as the gripping of the skin onto the pole is an essential part of the craft. Without the friction between your skin and the pole, you will not be able to pole dance, which is why you don’t see pole dancers wear leggings or anything full-length. If you are uncomfortable wearing just a sports bra for a class, you can wear a comfortable t-shirt or tank top over it.
What to bring
All you really need to bring to a pole class is a bottle of water to keep you hydrated and yourself! Since the poles are already securely bolted into the ceiling and the floor of the studios, there actually isn’t much to bring on your end.
What to expect
If you’re a beginner, chances are you’ll be taking a trial class that is specifically designed for people in your level. To get your body warmed up, you’ll begin with basic stretches and strengthening exercises like leg lifts, crunches and pull-ups to activate your arms and core area. You’ll then be taught the basic tricks and spins that are beginner-friendly by breaking them down into individual components so that it is easier to understand and execute.
It is normal to feel a little nervous at a pole class, but you should never feel intimidated! You may not be able to get it on the first few tries but you know what they say — practice makes perfect.
Common misconceptions about pole dancing
It is only for women
While the majority of the pole dancing community anywhere in the world is mostly dominated by women, men can also learn how to pole dance. Just like different dance styles out there, pole dance can also be enjoyed by men. It is not written anywhere that men cannot learn pole dance, so go ahead and give it a try! At the end of the day, pole dance is a fun and intensive workout activity for anyone to enjoy.
It is an exotic or sensual sport
One of the most common misconceptions about pole dancing is that it is sensual or exotic. However, pole dance was never meant to be sensual in the first place. The art of pole requires technique and acrobatic movements and tricks but doesn’t require one to strip or dance erotically. The most probable reason for why people think this way is that pole dancers are required to wear bike shorts or revealing clothes, but what they don’t know is the skin-to-pole friction is what allows dancers to perform tricks and spins in the first palace.
You need to be fit before learning pole dancing
Most people are intimidated by pole dancing as they have the mindset that prior experience in pole or gymnastics is required to be able to learn. Or in some instances, there are people who feel that they are not fit enough for pole dancing.
While it is true that pole dancing can be physically demanding, and professional pole dancers are extremely fit, everybody starts somewhere. We always have to consider the fact that these professionals have been trained for years and what they have now is a result of hard work and dedication. As long as you have both of those things, anyone and everyone can learn pole dancing.
