Getting a piercing is no doubt an exciting affair. Whether you are getting an ear piercing or a body piercing, it gives you a reason to accessorise your piercing with some bling. At the same time, people with piercings tend to look more badass and ahem, cool in some way.
What are the types of piercings available in Singapore?
If you are a complete newbie when it comes to piercings, fret not! Piercings are not just limited to piercings on the ear lobe. In fact, pretty much any part of your ear and body can be pierced. The only limiting factor would be your pain threshold and whether you are daring enough.
Here are the various types of ear and body piercings that you can get in Singapore.
Ear piercings
Ear piercings are the most common type of piercings that most people opt for as they tend to be the least painful. This is particularly so for lobe piercings as they tend to be the fleshiest part of the ear. Ask around and people may compare the pain scale of getting a ear piercing to that of getting bitten by a red ant or receiving an injection.
Any other ear piercing besides the lobe is referred to as cartilage piercing. This includes conch, tragus and helix. These types of piercings tend to be more painful as they are less fleshy compared to earlobes.
Facial piercings
Common types of facial piercings include eyebrow piercing, nose piercing and septum piercing – which is the cartilage in the nose that separates your nostrils.
While facial piercings may sound painful, they actually heal quite quickly with proper aftercare given the extensive blood flow around the face.
Facial piercings are the most prominent piercings that you can ever have and are often easily noticeable by others. Hence, do consider whether a facial piercing is compatible with your lifestyle, such as workplace or school, before getting one.
Oral piercings
Oral piercings are any piercings that are done inside the mouth, with the most common being tongue piercing. Tongue piercings are highly popular given that it is easily concealable.
However, oral piercings tend to come with a high risk of gum or tooth infection. Hence, extra care is needed if you are considering getting an oral piercing.
Belly button piercing
Belly button piercing is another popular type of body piercing as it can be concealed or showed off depending on the occasion.
Despite its popularity, belly button piercing requires extra care to ensure proper healing. The healing process tends to be relatively long as well, ranging from 8 weeks up to 4 months.
What are the various methods of piercing?
The two most common types of piercing techniques would be using a piercing gun or a piercing needle.
Piercing guns are typically only used for lobe piercings. The ear studs are loaded into the piercing gun and punctures through your earlobes using brute force. While it is a quick method, it may not be suitable for everyone as some may have thicker earlobes than others.
Piercing needles are typically used for any other types of piercings and are often used by professional piercing parlours. These piercing needles are hollow and have a sharp point at the end to create a clean hole. Piercing needles are said to be a safer and cleaner method of piercing as opposed to using a piercing gun.

Aftercare tips for any types of piercing
Piercing aftercare is of paramount importance as it ensures that your piercing heals well and prevents it from getting infected.
Here are some crucial aftercare tips to ensure that your piercing heals properly.
Wash the pierced area with saline solution
After you get your piercing, the piercing parlour may provide you with some antiseptic or saline solution. Use this solution religiously until your piercing heals. After all, your piercing is still considered a wound and it is important to keep the pierced area clean to prevent it from swelling or getting infected.
Avoid washing the pierced area with an alcohol solution. An alcohol solution tends to cause the pierced area to dry out, which may cause the wound to crack and delay the healing process.
Minimise trauma to the pierced area
This means sleeping on your back for a week straight without turning if you pierced both of your earlobes. Most piercings tend to get irritated and heal slowly due to additional trauma to the pierced area such as bumping, snagging on a loose thread or sleeping on the pierced area.
If you do hit onto your pierced area by accident, ensure that you clean the area well and check for signs of swelling or infection.
Turn your jewellery regularly but only when it is wet
Your pierced area may end up getting some blood or fluid crust around it and this may tempt you to turn your piercing jewellery. That is possible, but only do it when the pierced area is wet.
If the area is dry, avoid turning the jewellery too much as this may cause additional trauma to the pierced area.
Keep an eye out for healing and know how long you will need to wait
Depending on the type of piercing that you have done, the healing process will differ as well. Lobe piercings tend to take a shorter time to heal, typically around a week. Any type of cartilage piercing, including body piercings typically take longer, between several weeks to months.
To be on the safe side, always clean and inspect your pierced area. Once the swelling, fluid secretion and pain has stopped, this typically indicates that your piercing has completed healed!
Clean your piercings and jewellery regularly
It is important to clean your pierced area and piercing jewellery regularly even after they are fully healed. This is to remove any dirt and grime that may have gotten stuck in the pierced area and in-between your piercing jewellery.
Some piercing jewellery may end up getting rust due to prolonged exposure to sun and moisture, which may cause infection in your piercing if not cleaned or removed. A cotton bud and water should do the trick to remove any dirt and grime.
