Neurofeedback: A Review
Neurofeedback, alternatively termed electroencephalogram (EEG) biofeedback or neurotherapy, refers to supplementary treatment delivered for psychiatric illnesses inclusive of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Phobic Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Depression or Affective Disorders, Autism, or Addictive Disorders.
In neurofeedback treatments, patients are trained to produce ideal Brain Wave Patterns projected upon the computer screen through steering applied movement on some Computerized Game, or activity projected upon some alternate screen.
Rises in the data-registers of low-speed rotative movements get rewarded instantly.
Such rewards are reflected in tabulated scores, resembling scores gathered from some computer game.
Neurofeedback gets consistently applied for treating Brain Wave Dysregulation connected to traumatic experiences.
Right-side treatment also gets applied to treat social, emotional conditions inclusive of Conduct Disorder, Autism, or Reactive Attachment Disorder.
More studies provide evidence that EEG neurofeedback might work effectively in contrast to psychostimulants for medical treatment of ADHD supposing medication fails to work, triggers negative episodes, or if patients fail to comply.
From certain studies, a 36-year-old female suffering from ADHD, Temporal Seizure Disorder or borderline personality disorder took 30 weekly sessions of SMR neurofeedback training with carbamazepine.
The patient was initially hesitant to take carbamazepine, still she gradually complied with completing full neurofeedback treatment.
Still, due to the medication’s side effects, she halted, restarted, then next completely stopped taking medication.
From some studies, 36 children, aged 6 years to 17 years, who engaged in EEG neurofeedback as treatment for attention-deficit disorder (ADD)/ADHD or who engaged in assessment tests, gradually showed notable improvement for all subjective and objective medical conditions.
Following 20 treatments, subjective recovery observed by engaged parents was recorded at 86%.
Within objective evaluations, observed general recovery registered at 74% in TOVA scores or 78% in positive improvements in QEEG records.
Within a 1-year interval, neurofeedback became linked to some potentially related lowering or ceasing of pharmacotherapy, with 16 of 24 patients continuing to imbibe drugs for ADD/ADHD.

Reading from past studies, 11 females, ages 12 years to 21 years, suffering from dissociative identity disorder (DID) took 30 neurofeedback with 10 group therapy sessions.
Neurofeedback brought about positive improvements over pre- or post-treatment scores over in Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) from a 65-year-old woman suffering from acute diagnosed depressive disorder, or with a 42-year-old woman suffering severe psychological maladjustment.
Engaged researchers inferred finally that while EEG single-use treatment fails to function as independent treatment for depression, this serves as a potent alternative, side treatment to psychotherapy for treating specific mood disorders.
Some neurofeedback rules might help in treatments for anxiety disorders, still effective working of neurofeedback treatments for anxiety could vary according to the specific diagnostic yardsticks for assessment.
Research work on the impact of neurofeedback for bipolar disorder (BD) eventually delivered mixed results.
While Rosenfeld, MD failed to effectively treat 2 patients with BD with the neurofeedback diagnostics, Othmer, MD found neurofeedback to work well in alleviating mood swings for junior patients with BD with a mix of pharmacotherapy with psychotherapy.
From the Othmer research work, neurofeedback diagnostics that directly reach both right and left brain hemispheres at once, proved highly effective for treating kids suffering from BD.
To add, EEG neurofeedback could prove less effective in alleviating psychotic symptoms.
Researchers have effectively deployed neurofeedback to improve, mitigate poor prognosis projections for schizophrenic and schizotypal patients at the subacute stage of illness.
Also certain research demonstrates that neurofeedback has proven highly effective for the long term treatment of substance abusers.
Potential breakthroughs
Notwithstanding encouraging indications from research work, Russell A. Barkley, Ph.D., professor of psychiatry and neurology at University of Massachusetts Medical School, questions arguments that EEG neurofeedback alleviates ADHD.
Barkley told PT that EEG neurofeedback is not based on empirical science. “One chief problem,” he cautioned, “is that pre- and post-changes occur in subjects with ADHD regardless of whether or not they receive neurofeedback.” Barkley indicated apparent alleviations in objective treatments of ADHD signs ( inclusive of parent or teacher ranking grades of disruptive behaviour) do not translate into any significant behavioural changes.” Because of the lack of adequately designed studies, any effects associated with EEG neurofeedback may be due to the placebo response,” Barkley said.
Still, Lubar’s 1995 research offered comparative pre- and post-treatment results of certain symptoms in subjects with ADHD that recovered or with some that did not.
Most reported, that pre-/post-alterations found in general neurofeedback-alleviating treatment solutions very much resembled alterations found for pre-/post-medication for patients with ADHD.
More studies studying impact of EEG neurofeedback or psychostimulants demonstrate that neurofeedback induces post-treatment alterations that resembled improvements witnessed in pharmacotherapy treatments.
To conclude from such evidence, supporters posit that neurofeedback delivers the medical breakthroughs through working upon electrophysiological substrates within the brain, not working through some placebo treatment.
“Critics of EEG neurofeedback hold this treatment to more rigid standards than many of the drug treatments,” David F. Velkoff, M.D., medical director of the Drake Institute of Behavioral Medicine in Los Angeles, that has assisted above 1,000 patients using neurotherapy, informed press reporters.
“Yet unlike drugs, neurofeedback is benign.” According to Frank H. Duffy, M.D., associate editor for Clinical Electroencephalography, most pharmaceutical prescriptions which delivered the broad ranging impact as potent as neurofeedback should be widely prescribed and universally used.
While neurofeedback is mere interrogative treatment, the rising amount of researchers studying neurofeedback therapy are sufficiently impressed with its potency to support new initiations of monitored medical trials with substantial study samples that could potentially deliver similar results.
“Alternative research designs involving sham neurofeedback are already in use as well as comparative investigations of neurofeedback with both conventional treatments and with combined treatments consisting of neurofeedback and psychostimulants,” reported from Lubar.
“The Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback [AAPB] is currently developing application standards for ethical controlled studies of neurofeedback that simultaneously protect patients and the integrity of research investigations.”
To conclude, early research demonstrates that psychopharmacological and electrophysiological methods to approach treatments of mood and behavioral disorders are not inherently contradicting or nullifying.
Neurofeedback is probably better seen not as some alternative to mainstream psychopharmacological drugs, rather these may eventually count as partial segments of a multimodal approach.
Upon being applied as a side treatment or combined with mainstream medication, neurofeedback could potentially alleviate some clinical conditions in certain psychiatric patients.
Cost of Neurofeedback treatment in Singapore
Neurofeedback therapy is a highly effective method for optimizing brain function and addressing various neurological conditions.
If you’re considering neurofeedback treatment in Singapore, one important aspect to consider is the cost. Understanding the pricing factors and structures can help you plan your budget and determine the feasibility of undergoing neurofeedback therapy.
In this section, we’ll delve into the cost of neurofeedback treatment in Singapore, giving you a comprehensive overview of the financial aspects associated with this beneficial therapy.
Factors Affecting the Cost of Neurofeedback Treatment
The cost of neurofeedback treatment can vary based on several factors. Here are some key aspects that can influence the pricing:
- Clinic Reputation and Expertise: The reputation and expertise of the neurofeedback clinic or practitioner can play a role in the cost of treatment. Established clinics with a strong track record and experienced practitioners may charge higher fees due to their expertise and successful treatment outcomes. These providers have invested significant time and resources into building their reputation, which is reflected in the pricing of their services.
- Treatment Duration and Frequency: The duration and frequency of neurofeedback sessions can impact the overall cost. The number of sessions required for your specific condition or goals will depend on various factors, such as the severity of the condition and individual response to treatment. Typically, neurofeedback treatment involves multiple sessions spread over a period of time. Providers may offer different package options based on the number of sessions, with discounts available for longer treatment plans.
- Additional Assessments and Services: In some cases, additional assessments or services may be required as part of the neurofeedback treatment process. These can include initial assessments, brainwave mapping, or supplementary therapies that complement the neurofeedback sessions. These additional services may incur extra costs, so it’s essential to inquire about any potential add-ons when discussing the pricing with the provider. Understanding the complete treatment package and its associated costs will give you a clearer picture of the financial commitment involved.
- Equipment and Technology: Neurofeedback treatment relies on specialized equipment and advanced technology to monitor and train brain activity. The quality and sophistication of the equipment used can influence the cost of treatment. Providers who invest in state-of-the-art equipment and stay updated with the latest advancements in neurofeedback technology may charge higher fees to cover the expenses associated with maintaining and upgrading their equipment. However, it’s important to remember that the quality of equipment can contribute to more accurate and effective treatment outcomes.
- Location and Overhead Costs: The location of the neurofeedback clinic can also impact the pricing. In metropolitan areas or prime locations where overhead costs, such as rent and operational expenses, are higher, the cost of treatment may be slightly elevated. Providers need to cover their expenses to maintain a suitable treatment environment and ensure the availability of necessary resources. However, it’s worth considering that location-based pricing variations can vary significantly, so it’s essential to explore multiple options to find the right balance between cost and quality of service.
Common Pricing Structures for Neurofeedback Treatment
Neurofeedback treatment providers in Singapore may adopt different pricing structures. Here are a few common approaches to consider:
- Per Session Pricing: Some providers charge a fixed fee for each neurofeedback session. This pricing structure allows you to pay for each session individually, offering flexibility in terms of commitment and financial planning. However, it’s important to note that the total cost of treatment will depend on the number of sessions required for your specific needs.
- Package Deals: Many neurofeedback clinics offer package deals that include multiple sessions at a discounted rate. These packages often provide cost savings compared to paying for each session separately. Providers may offer different package options, such as packages for a specific number of sessions or comprehensive treatment plans that include assessments and supplementary therapies. Discussing your treatment goals and requirements with the provider can help you determine the most suitable package deal for your needs.
- Membership Programs: Some neurofeedback clinics may have membership programs or subscription-based models. These programs often involve monthly or annual fees that grant you access to a certain number of sessions or additional benefits. Membership programs can be cost-effective for individuals who anticipate ongoing or long-term neurofeedback therapy.
It’s important to have a clear understanding of the pricing structure and any associated terms and conditions before committing to any neurofeedback treatment plan.
Open communication with the provider regarding the financial aspects will help you make an informed decision and avoid any surprises along the way.
Understanding the Average Cost of Neurofeedback Treatment in Singapore
The average cost of neurofeedback treatment in Singapore can range from approximately SGD 150 to SGD 300 per session. However, it’s important to note that this is a general estimate, and the actual cost may vary depending on the factors mentioned earlier. The total cost of treatment will depend on the number of sessions required and any additional services or assessments involved.
When considering the cost of neurofeedback treatment, it’s crucial to view it as an investment in your health and well-being. Neurofeedback therapy has shown remarkable results in improving brain function, managing neurological conditions, and enhancing cognitive performance.
The long-term benefits and potential improvements in quality of life can outweigh the initial financial commitment.
Tips on Choosing the Best Neurofeedback Services in Singapore
Neurofeedback is a non-invasive therapy that uses real-time displays of brain activity to help individuals regulate and optimize their brain function.
It has gained popularity in recent years as a natural and effective method for addressing various neurological conditions, enhancing cognitive performance, and promoting mental well-being.
If you’re considering neurofeedback services in Singapore, it’s essential to choose a reputable provider who can offer professional guidance and personalized treatment plans.
Let’s explore some valuable tips to help you make the right choice.
- Research and Gather Information: When it comes to choosing neurofeedback services, knowledge is power. Start by researching different providers in Singapore and gather as much information as possible. Look for clinics or practitioners who specialize in neurofeedback therapy and have experience in treating conditions similar to yours. Check their websites, read online reviews and testimonials, and learn about their qualifications and expertise. Understanding the background and reputation of potential providers will give you a clearer idea of their capabilities.
- Assess Credentials and Expertise: Once you have identified a few neurofeedback service providers, it’s crucial to assess their credentials and expertise. Neurofeedback therapy requires specific training and qualifications to ensure safe and effective treatment. Look for providers who have received proper certification and are affiliated with reputable professional organizations in the field of neurofeedback. This demonstrates their commitment to maintaining high standards and staying updated with the latest advancements in the industry. Additionally, consider the experience and specialization of the practitioners within the clinic. A provider with extensive experience in treating a wide range of conditions will likely offer more comprehensive and tailored treatment options.
- Evaluate the Range of Services Offered: Neurofeedback services can vary in terms of the techniques and equipment used, as well as the specific conditions they address. Take the time to understand the range of services offered by each provider. Some clinics may focus on specific areas, such as ADHD or anxiety, while others offer a broader range of neurofeedback treatments. Consider your individual needs and goals and choose a provider that aligns with them. It’s also beneficial to inquire about any additional therapies or support they offer alongside neurofeedback, as a holistic approach can enhance the overall effectiveness of the treatment.
- Consider the Clinic Environment: The atmosphere and environment of the neurofeedback clinic can play a significant role in your overall experience and comfort during the therapy sessions. When selecting a provider, visit the clinic if possible, or at least request a virtual tour. Pay attention to the cleanliness, ambiance, and overall professionalism of the facility. A welcoming and comfortable setting can contribute to a positive therapeutic experience. Additionally, consider the availability of amenities that may enhance your comfort, such as relaxation areas or refreshments.
- Inquire about Customization and Personalization: Every individual is unique, and their neurofeedback therapy should reflect that. Inquire about the level of customization and personalization offered by the provider. Effective neurofeedback treatment should be tailored to your specific needs and goals. Ask how the provider assesses your condition and designs a treatment plan. A comprehensive assessment process, including detailed intake interviews and brainwave mapping, can help create an individualized treatment approach that targets your specific areas of concern.
- Seek Transparency in Pricing and Packages: Before committing to any neurofeedback service, it’s essential to have a clear understanding of the pricing structure and available packages. Inquire about the cost per session, as well as any additional fees for assessments or supplementary services. Ask if they offer package deals or discounts for multiple sessions. Transparency in pricing will help you plan your budget accordingly and ensure that there are no surprises along the way.
- Request a Consultation: Once you have narrowed down your options, consider scheduling a consultation with the potential neurofeedback service providers. A consultation allows you to have a direct conversation with the practitioners, ask specific questions, and get a feel for their approach and communication style. Use this opportunity to discuss your concerns, treatment goals, and expectations. A reputable provider will take the time to address your queries and provide you with a clear understanding of how neurofeedback can benefit you.
- Trust Your Instincts: Ultimately, trust your instincts when choosing a neurofeedback service provider. Pay attention to how comfortable you feel during the consultation and how well the practitioner understands your needs. Trust and rapport with your provider are crucial for a successful therapeutic relationship. If something doesn’t feel right or you have any doubts, it’s okay to explore other options until you find the one that feels like the best fit for you.
