Whether you dream of acquiring the slick moves of your action heroes or want a workout that shapes you up, Muay Thai can definitely take a step closer to your goals!
What Is Muay Thai?
Muay Thai or Thai Boxing is a striking-based martial art, known for its deadly jabs, hooks, uppercuts and bone-crushing kicks.
Known as the “Science of 8 Limbs”, Muay Thai focuses on 8 different points of strikes – 2 from your fists, 2 from your elbows, 2 from your knees and 2 from your legs. It’s a potentially deadly fighting style, and it’s not uncommon for many professional fighters to have a short career spans.
However, international boxing laws have stepped in to massively reduce the perils of the sport by ensuring official challengers to wear gloves and groin protection.
In recent years, Muay Thai has been given provincial recognition by the International Olympic Committee and could be on its way to be an official Olympic sport soon!
Benefits of Muay Thai
If you like to add in more fun and vigour to your mundane exercise routine, here are some other reasons why you should take up Muay Thai!
It’s an Excellent Weight Loss and Bodysculpting Exercise
A typical Muay Thai class consists of a fusion of exercises found in other workouts. It may include elements of Circuit Training, High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), Jumping Rope and Shadow Boxing. Train diligently, and you can potentially burn up to 1,000 to 2,000 calories within a 90-minute class!
Asides from the 8-limbs, the various strikes and movements used in Muay Thai can also activate your core and tone up your muscles. This could potentially pave the way for a gorgeous set of washboard abs!
Of course, like all beauty claims, results may vary! Don’t go into a gym and wonder why that dude across the hallway is so ripped. He might have been putting months and maybe years of effort to get to where he is today. So, get your butts off start doing some Muay Thai!
It’s a Safe Outlet to Channel Your Angst and Stress
Working life can be stressful. The office may be filled with lots of politics. Yet, before you blow up in front of someone or utter something that you’ll regret for the rest of your life, consider taking that anger to somewhere else.
This martial art gives you the avenue to channel your anger safely. The padworks are an excellent avenue to get that anger out of you. Your instructor will also be there to ensure that no one gets hurt!
On the flip side, during sparring practices and matches, a reactive person may be on the losing end. Seasoned Muay Thai practitioners have also developed their inner calmness overtime to win a fight.
Muay Thai, like any form of exercise, also facilitates the production of endorphins. This neurotransmitter makes you feel good and release stress.
You Can Meet Like-Minded People
Muay Thai, unlike other individual sports, requires you to partner up and practice your pad works. You’ll definitely need lots of communication to help each other improve and build trust.
Training with a group of people, aka your #fitfam, can also alter our brain chemistry and outlook, building a stronger connection with others, according to psychologist and author, Dr Kelly McGonigal.
It Fosters Self-Discipline
Let’s get some facts straight. As fun as Muay Thai is, the training can be very intense. In some classes, you may even get scolded for taking a sip of water during padworks!
No, the instructor isn’t trying to torture you by any means of your imagination. It’s because there are no breaks in real-life Muay Thai matches and street fights. When you’re feeling weak, and on the losing end, the only way is to stay strong and fight on.
Self-discipline is a habit that’s transferrable from the gym to your desk. It can dramatically change your life for the better. You complain less and produce more, leading to more opportunities for progression in your career.
Muay Thai Is an Effective Martial Art
Muay Thai is not an exercise practised solely for aerobic purposes. The jabs and kicks are lethal enough to knock out someone on the street. Many of its strikes come from the very sharp ends of your body, such as the elbow, knees and shins, which can result in a devastating outcome when applied correctly.
Many famed Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) practitioners have incorporated several signature Muay Thai moves to deliver blows to their opponents in the octagon. Speaking of which, learning Muay Thai can definitely catalyse your progression in practising MMA.
Cost of Learning Muay Thai
Muay Thai classes usually come in 2 separate pricing structures – per class or per month. The average cost per class ranges from $25-$50. On the other hand, a monthly package, where you can attend an unlimited amount of lessons, will set you back by around $200-$300 per month.
Bear in mind that you may also be required to purchase your own gloves and hand wraps. This is essential, following the COVID-19 pandemic, where hygiene standards are observed to its strictest levels. A pair of gloves cost approximately $20-$30, while the hand wraps range from $5-$20. These are essential protection to minimise the risks from training.
2 other areas that require protection are your teeth and your groin, for apparent reasons. You can get a mouthguard for as low as $2 to as high as over $100. A more expensive mouthguard is usually customised based on the impression of your teeth, giving you more comfort during practice. A groin guard can range from $10-$40.
Tips Before Starting Your Muay Thai Lesson
Prepare Well
As much as you want to come with an open mind, watching tutorials will facilitate your progress in the class. Pay attention to the footwork and stances. Come early and do some warmups that will stretch your hips and ligaments. This helps you to be more flexible when performing strikes. Your teacher can focus his/her time and energy to correct on your moves instead of your foundations.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_856r5jSGs
This will take up some time, but learning how to wrap your hands properly is essential to keep them safe throughout the practice.
Be a Great Team Player
A considerable portion of your beginner’s Muay Thai class will involve practising on the pads. Bear in mind that you’re not the only one practising. You’ll have to master holding the pads for your partner. Otherwise, potential mishaps may ensue due to negligent handling of the pads!
Be friendly and encouraging to your partner for potential reciprocity. Your training becomes better when both of you are in sync.
Eat and Hydrate Well
It is recommended to eat at least 2 hours before your training. Muay Thai is a physically demanding sport that requires the necessary nutrients to fuel your entire training regiment. Some recommended food include a healthy amount of whole grains, carbs, bananas, eggs and yoghurt. Avoid sugary or fatty food to prevent a sudden crash of energy or a bloated stomach.
Remember to drink enough water before and after the training, as well as during the breaks. This is to prevent dehydration which may impair your performance or even lead to severe consequences, such as passing out.
Remember to Stretch After Your Workout
Stretching will prevent muscle soreness and stiffness after your practice. It can also help reset your body back its natural position. If you have some extra budget, try out Yoga, which can go hand-in-hand with your Muay Thai training. Yoga allows you to properly release any tension in your body, perfect your balance and improve your breathing capacity. The latter is very crucial in an intense sport like Muay Thai.
Get Adequate Rest
Muay Thai can take a toll on your body. The best way to aid muscle recovery is to get enough rest so that your body can be ready for the next round of training. A minimum of 8 hours of sleep can also facilitate muscle growth.
With that information, I wish you all the best in your Muay Thai journey! The following are Singapore’s top Muay Thai Gyms, in no specific order.

Review 1 | “Really cosy boxing gym here in the area. They have pretty good packages if you’re trying to find something for the longer term. The unlimited package can be quite a good deal if you’re looking for some hardcore action every week for multiple sessions each time. Coach and trainers are quite patient, although I wished they could be a bit more aggressive with their instructions like a boot camp of sorts. This will hugely spur people to put their best foot forward and push hard and fast during the 60 minutes session.” |
Review 2 | “Just did the online 1-1 personal training with Master Coach Alex. The training was really intensive packed with 1000 reps to finish in 60 mins. I got really exhausted in the midst of the workout but managed to pull it through to the end. This is definitely a challenge that I never knew I could do it. All thanks to Alex for pushing me to the limit and continue to train me via online so I don’t miss any training during this Covid-19 period.” |

“The Jungle MMA is located on the 2nd floor of a shophouse at boat Quay. (Look for Fatboys restaurant.) Other than Evolve, one of the few places that have AC when training. It is a great place that offers Muay Thai, BJJ, MMA boxing classes. No free trial class, a single class is $32. However, they offer the best flexible memberships. You can buy a class package or 1, 3,6 or 12 months memberships. Look for the owner Alex, he is a great guy and will take care of you.”

Everyone there is welcoming and nice and will help you along the way from the people at the front desk to the teachers and even the people you train with. Review 1 | “I feel the trainers here really care about you. They take their time to help you improve. They tell you what you can do better, as well as encourage you and congratulate you when you do good. In many other gyms, trainers are almost on auto mode. Involvement of the trainer in each class makes each class feel semi-private. Good value.” |

Review 1 | “As a novice level beginner with absolutely no idea about martial arts, I’m glad I made JR Muay Thai my 1st contact.
From the registration process to the actual 1st class, everything was clearly communicated. they were also very patient with my queries regarding what to expect, what attire to wear, what gear to bring etc. again, as somebody with zero experience, it was very reassuring. Highly recommended for me.” |
Review 2 | “Wonderful and good training. Won’t regret!” |
Review 3 | “It was a totally cool first experience of Muay Thai here. The training started with warm-ups; skipping and stretching, followed by technical striking on the pads. I got to pair up with different partners to practice. There was also a light sparring session. Best of all, the trainers were friendly and they really guide you. Gloves were provided and shower facilities are available too! I highly recommend JR Muay Thai.” |

Review | Went for my trial lesson in late July and instantly felt like this is the gym for me. I never liked going to the gym before this due to my insecurities about being judged but here at 6 Sigma, everyone is so encouraging and friendly as they always ensure you are pushed to your limits. The coaches are dedicated and passionate in helping you achieve your goals. If you are keen in learning Muay Thai and want to feel confident and strong, do join 6 Sigma gym now!! |
Review | I joined 6Sigma end of last year and here I have discovered my love for Muay Thai with the guidance of skilful and encouraging coaches who always push you to do your utmost best. The atmosphere of the gym is so welcoming and you feel right at home. Friendly faces all around, I’m always keen on coming back for my next classes. You always leave the gym with a sense of self achievement by pushing yourself a little further day by day. Apart from the physical benefits, Muay Thai truly tests your mental strength and toughens one’s mental ability to endure and persevere even when things get tough. Through training at 6Sigma, you build stronger mental resistance which I have realised, can be applied to every day life activities. 10/10 would recommend this gym. Come join and discover the fighter in you! |
Review | I had my trial class over a year ago and knew right away that this gym was superior to others. From day one I could tell that this was a place where I could be part of a community and be challenged to continually give my best! The instructors are very knowledgeable and friendly. They spend time getting to know you and not only your strengths, but also where you need to improve. I also appreciate the care they put into maintaining the space and keeping everything exceptionally clean. I always look forward to my workouts at 6 Sigma! |

Review 1 | “Recently joined United Muay Thai gym as my previous gym was recently closed for relocation. I came across this gym through a Facebook ad and went for a free trial class.
It’s located in a really good spot along Thomson Road which isn’t hard to find. I reached an hour early as I wanted to observe its surroundings and had observed a neat, clean, bright, cosy gym ( not too big neither too small) and I was warmly greeted by their trainers and chief trainer Aloysius. The training was good as they will study your strengths and weaknesses during conditioning training and pad work. I personally feel that it is a good place to pick up this art of Muay Thai as they are willing to teach you the proper techniques and is willing to mould you to do the best that you can with time, but of course, it comes with effort and a little nagging or scolding by the chief trainer himself if you aren’t able to get it to his standards of approval despite the repeated guidance which I feel it is good as at the end of the day it’s nothing personal as one has to just take it with a pinch of salt during training. But if you choose to be praised and buttered with lovely words and asking you to take your time which I feel, will ultimately be wasting your time and money. I had attended a few more lessons over at United Muay Thai gym thereafter and I observed that the trainers and chief trainer Aloysius are dedicated to what they do when it comes to training. I would certainly recommend others who are willing to be committed to training, to come over to give this place a shot. Do bring your own towel if you choose to shower after training.” |
Review 2 | “Highly recommended if you want to learn Muay Thai. I have been training at united Muay Thai for about a year and all I can say is that the environment is amazing. The coach is very technical and ensures each and every student understands how and what is going on. He teaches everyone no matter level the same way. It is unbiased. He ensures the students perfects the technique and is patient. He explains clearly how each technique should be done and the people at the gym are very friendly. The trainers are also very enthusiastic and teach well. It has truly been an amazing journey and it will continue to be.” |

Review 1 | “Great gym, the coaches are really passionate about their craft and safe to say, even after spending time in other gyms, I have not met a group of individuals as dedicated to imparting their knowledge of the sport to others.
I have learnt that most of the coaches hold regular jobs yet spend their free time endlessly after-work coaching and training yet they display enthusiasm at every class. Apart from the sound of punching bags and pads being smashed, there is always laughter in the air and it speaks volumes about the atmosphere in the gym. Very different from the usual commercial gyms out there where quantity supersedes proper training. I will definitely be coming here more often 👍” |
Review 2 | “Really like the culture at this place, it may seem intimidating at first but everyone is extremely warm and inclusive. More importantly, the trainers really care about correcting your form and technique. The instructor-to-student ratio is good so you will definitely get sufficient attention and a great workout!” |
Review 3 | “Always enjoyed training at Hilltop! Coaches/instructors are ever patient to guide and correct your form and techniques. The environment is also conducive for learning for beginners to advanced members. Overall a great gym filled with positive energy. Never regretted becoming a member of Hilltop! No pain, no Muay Thai!” |

Review 1 | “A very friendly gym where absolute beginners are welcome. Amazing cardio workout, you get lots of instruction on technique, and most of all it’s good fun.” |
Review 2 | “Loves this Muay Thai gym. Instructors are patient, encouraging and friendly. Been attending classes for the past 1 year, I have observed a vast improvement in my cardio and strength. Muay Thai is a fun way to learn a new skill, discipline and burn some fat at the same time. Will definitely recommend to friends to come.” |
Review 3 | “This is not the first gym that I joined but I have no regret and thanks god I found this place.
The place and equipment are well maintained and trainers are so passionate and full of patience. Master Johnny and his team of trainers are so responsible and they keep track of our moves and progress, and any wrong move will be taught and corrected. This is not a gym but a big family with lovely peoples, and seniors who are so friendly to guide us and the newcomers. If you want to pick up some real techniques and skill of Muay Thai, this is A PLACE that I will RECOMMEND to all. You must come to experience it for yourself.” |

Review 1 | “De facto gym to learn and train in the art of Nak Muay.. technically strong coaches, Thai replica authentic gym and a great crowd. Head coach Chris knows and takes effort to level out/push boundaries of the students to their levels with his pro-Thai trainers. Recommended for all levels.” |
Review 2 | “Behind the techniques and skills lie the discipline and other soft skills that are exhibited from the coaches. The Founder of Muay Thai has imparted and instilled the values well.” |
Review 3 | “Good Coaching from trainers.” |
