Minimart industry in Singapore:
To meet regular grocery shopping demands, Singaporeans would likely proceed directly, intuitively towards 1 of Singapore’s mass supermarket chains — likely the nearby FairPrice, Cold Storage or Sheng Siong.
This owes mostly to this simple reason: These huge players are currently ubiquitous.
Within recent times, these began gradually shifting into areas which were formally viewed as minimart havens – embedded in the hidden recesses of Housing Board Estates.
Presently, Sheng Siong stores get widely located in void decks of Housing and Development Board Flats.
FairPrice has started the FairPrice Shop, a basic retail stop catering to savings-conscious shoppers. Such shops are now popping up even in mature housing estates.
Market debuts of these mass chains eventually had an adverse impact on the general profitability of minimarts.
Still one could possibly detect some glimmers of positivity from this down turn— these mass chain competitors were living evidence that these heartland locations in which minimarts usually operate are possibly very strategically placed.
Thus, though it remains an uphill struggle competing directly against such grocery chains due to the sheer lack of capital, minimarts could confront the daunting challenge by finetuning general marketing strategies to stay profitable.
At hand, there remain possible opportunities for the average minimart store’s expansion through the radical revamping, technological upgrading of store setups.
Such entails streamlining operations or installing IT to survive, ride, surmount, the tidal waves of accelerating change, innovation many now witness, confront with minimart operations.

Review 1 | One of the most efficient Amazon receiving center. I had been to 2 others and process was a lot less efficient. Only thing is that they still lose my items and say they never receive which is impossible. We always check the goods we pack manually at least 3 times and yet they sometimes don’t pay us. These ‘disputes’ are amounting to thousands by now with Amazon being one-sided and never resolving our complaints nor being fair. But this is definitely not the worst center. The one at Tuas can report a while carton of goods missing when it was tallied and the guys counted the correct numbers on acceptance. Small businesses are at their mercy and there is nothing it seems we can do. |

Review 2 | There are plenty of flaws on e-commerce. Just like any others who gets 1-2 stars often, Shopee has no exception. But if you think Shopee is bad, try L*z or Ali… |

Review 1 | Probably the most compassionate supermarket in Singapore. There are nicer supermarkets in terms of shopping environment, variety etc. But none beats Sheng Siong for keeping prices low during the COVID-19 period. And in general. Sheng Siong also typically has fresher vegetables compared to other supermarkets. And their staff has excellent attitude and provide great service. To be fair, Sheng Siong has better variety now. The Upper Thomson branch is a good place to shop. I would choose to come here over Fairprice Finest at Thomson Plaza. |

Review 1 | I love tekka market.A lot of fresh vegetables and meat…fish etc. You can’t find in super market or other market. Nice place to just look around too. Only have to take it for the market smell. |
Review 2 | Huge place for wet market and hawker center. You can find seafood on the center and mostly lambs. Not many pork seller it seems as I didn’t find many and only a bit pork left for few stores. The price is good for wet market comparing to supermarket and freshness is better.
Even though hawker stalls that many, some of the hawker stores taste didn’t make it. Tried few stores and I didn’t like them. Maybe will try other stalls on my visit next time. Parking slot is limited but always can find parking if managed to go in. There might be queue outside the market. The place is a stone throw away from Little India station exit. Very accessible. Didn’t find any trace together in the front of the market and temperature taking. Some of the entrances are closed. |
Review 3 | Good place to go for buying meat and vegetables… could be better with little more cleanliness but it’s not that easy considering the big crowd roaming around all the day long in this relatively small building. |
Minimart Operations within a Digitalized Market:
When interviewing managers who run large scale minimart shop outlets within Singapore seeking to maintain, expand operations, many have suggested the following methods to survive innovation and the current rates of accelerated technological change.
Primarily, one had to ensure minimart managements must leverage scale to level the competition with massive grocery chains.
Technological upgrades could enable reduced pricing generally, while sellers accumulate scale, operations to deliver additional advantages including bulk buy bargains from wholesalers.
Also, independent minimart managers could consolidate community networks to procure discounts from wholesalers to ensure that retail prices level up the competition field with mass chains.
Minimarts may not sustain independent competition over the long haul, still, they could survive by leveraging ubiquitous presence, widespread, accessible distribution.
While young home cooks seek fast, easy delivery of raw ingredients for cooking meals, overall sustainability of Singapore’s wet markets remain at potential risk of being rendered redundant with accelerated technology advances.
Minimart managers regularly encounter labor shortages. To consider, one major challenge that these minimarts encounter regularly is active recruitment of fresh labor.
Minimarts manage substantial teams, still the turnover rate for locals remains very high — minimarts receive resignations of a median of 5 workers every month.
Many Singaporean workers resign as they experience difficulties managing labor burdens, workload.
As there is reduction in projected foreign worker quota within the next 2 years, this remains an issue that may not easily be resolved soon, with adequate speed to meet manpower supply demands.
Thus, minimarts need adapt to survive with less workers by improving, enhancing productivity.
Here is an opportunity for technology to replenish such roles to meet the labor shortage.
For example, self-checkout machines might supplement cashiering duties in general.
Supplementing major duties for managing cashiering work, minimart managers may then dedicate more time to meet specific, specialized customer service demands.
To implement self-checkout aisles, managers have to make much bigger investments in automation or technology.
Otherwise considered, the redundancy of the minimart format for retail is likely to come swiftly, in a blink of an eye.
Automating manual processes may enhance efficiency.
Very strenuous stock-taking labor — the burden of most minimart managers — remains 1 pressing form of labor shortage.
Rather than manually registering every product, inventory control might be consolidated via IT.
When any product stock in minimart shops drop to alarmingly low volumes, the inventory system then instantly notifies the main warehouse.
Thus operating, products may get restocked before stocks completely run out.
These are basic instances of ways to supplement, complement intense human labor exertion, demands.
Still, digitizing minimart inventory enables harvesting or interpretation of data analytics.
Such data sets offer crucial insights into consumer purchase habits.
While minimarts run in on smaller scales relative to supermarkets, accumulated data enables minimarts to access detailed data insights of engaged clients.
To consider, younger estates including Pasir Ris or Tengah– that hold a larger percentage of young, beginning families — could possibly need baby essentials inclusive of diapers or infant milk formula.
Examining data, many then may possibly affirm, confirm if these are actually prevailing inventory demands at any independent minimart.
Minimart managers have to quickly respond to client needs — such customized service could be the added value that minimarts can leverage over mass chains in terms of service levels.
Leveraging technology, this enables managing the labor shortage demands by supplementing, complementing much of arduous human labor with POS systems, barcode inventories to manage, fill up labor shortage demands.
The demand for government funding
The minimart industry currently stays viable or could remain profitable in operations as a retail format if operators upgrade with innovation, technology.
Still to consider all factors, minimarts could anticipate that public officials might take into consideration some of the challenges posed by prevailing regulations.
To consider, the basic packaging regulations for cigarettes packets are going to be implemented in practice soon.
Every brand of cigarettes must be retailed in a standardized packaging, including labelled health warnings that cover almost 75 per cent of cigarette packets.
Labels, brand designs or added promotional data is going to be prohibited.
This pushes up work demands in minimarts.
It will take high-cost labor to train existing staff to discern distinctions between the broad selection of tobacco goods.
Minimarts then anticipate extended service intervals for many serviced clients, not merely clients that buy tobacco goods.
Inventory or supply of stocks from wholesalers then become increasingly more complex and tedious.
When products appear similar, even automation might fail to alleviate issues with labor shortages as each pack or carton must be cautiously examined to prevent high-cost errors in delivering misplaced labels to clients.
After considering the effects of such new measures, minimart operators anticipate overall diminished productivity at a minimal 20 to 30 per cent calculated in total.
Minimarts hope that public officials may grant them extra time to adapt to new restrictions and enable the implementation of measures including colored price labels displaying product data that they might tag on within hidden recesses of the store or from their stock room storage.
To consider, minimarts retain some crucial roles to perform within Singapore’s retail market generally.
By adapting some proper upgrades, innovations, minimarts might avoid being squeezed out of the grocery market altogether.
Still, there must now be a paradigm shift in the modes that minimart’s operate.
Technology must be adopted. Suppose minimarts do not upgrade, chances of survival plunge to a potentially perilous low, considering the scale of available operating funds, superior cashflows of mass chain competitors.
