Having perfectly symmetrical eyebrows are all the rage now, and people are on a constant lookout for the best products and cosmetic procedures to get their brows “on fleek”. Our eyebrows can take hours to look perfect, and you’ll even have to do it all over again the next day. But did you know that there are multiple options now that can offer a semi-permanent fix?
Here’s everything you need to know about microblading.
What is microblading?
Microblading is a semi-permanent tattoo technique that involves implanting pigment into your skin’s superficial layers to resemble eyebrow hair with the use of fine-point needles. Unlike tattoos that last a lifetime, micro bladed brows are semi-permanent but can last for at least a year.
Most beauticians would advise their clients before the procedure on what the best shape and pigment colour is according to their face shape and skin tone, in order to get the best-looking results. However, clients may also communicate their preferences to their beautician, where they will align their expertise accordingly. Clients may opt for a beautifully bold brow or a natural, light finish. Apart from conducting the procedure on your eyebrows, microblading can also be done
What are some of its benefits?
Your brows will look perfect at all times
Just as the saying goes, “your eyebrows are sisters; not twins”. When filling in your brows, there’s still a tendency for both brows to look slightly different from one another, and not exactly the same. When it comes to microblading, the goal is to create the illusion of perfectly symmetrical brows. With that, you no longer have to worry about uneven eyebrows.
It saves you a lot of time
While some people may have already mastered the art of getting your eyebrows done in the morning in a short amount of time, others aren’t so lucky. With microbladed eyebrows, you are essentially saving yourself so much time in the morning or before you head out of your home. Since the pigment can last up to a year or for several years, you won’t even have to draw your eyebrows anymore!
It will not smudge or fade
When engaging in certain sports, especially more vigorous activities that will cause you to sweat, there’s always the danger of your makeup completely disappearing at the end of the day. Since the microblading pigments are implanted into the first three layers of the skin, it would be virtually impossible for the pigment to be wiped off with just one swipe. Without having to add makeup, clients can enjoy any physical activity without the hassle of losing the look of their brows.
It gives people with skin diseases natural-looking brows
Long-term skin diseases such as alopecia, contact dermatitis, and several nutrient deficiencies will cause a significant loss of eyebrow hair in an individual. In the same way that some cancer patients choose to wear wigs, semi-permanent eyebrows can also give these clients a sense of normalcy and dignity in the midst of their hair loss.
How does it differ from other semi-permanent procedures?
Microblading is often thought of as interchangeable with eyebrow tattooing. While there are similarities, both procedures are rather different.
Pigment
In eyebrow tattooing, tattoo ink is used during the treatment while microblading uses a specialised pigment. Ink differs greatly from these pigments as tattoo ink generally fades and develops blue-green tint over time, just like regular tattoos. This can cause one’s eyebrows to look oddly-coloured and resemblant of market-drawn eyebrows. With microblading, the pigment is specifically designed to fade into lighter colour overtime that retains its natural appearance.
Permanency
Just like regular tattoos, eyebrow tattoos are permanent. Once the tattoo has been drawn, it will be on your skin for life and there would be no alternative way to alter its appearance. On the other hand, microblading is a semi-permanent treatment, which means that it is meant to fade over a period of time. Once the pigment has faded, simple touch-ups can be done for clients who wish to maintain the look of their eyebrows.
Outcome
Because of the microblading pigments are applied onto the skin, it gives off a more natural outcome than eyebrow tattoos. The technique uses fine, tiny needles to create individual hair-like strokes, which are identical to the growth pattern of natural eyebrow hair. On the contrary, eyebrow tattoos look more “stamped-on” and are more bold than subtle.
Are there any risks involved?
One of the most common questions that people ask before booking a microblading appointment is if there is any pain involved in the procedure. There is definitely a certain level of pain involved since it is a procedure that involves needles at the end of the day. However, the pain level is still dependent on one’s pain tolerance and is described as more of a sensation than pain. For those who may not be comfortable with the discomfort, you may request for numbing cream from your beauticians.
When it comes to hygiene, you can be assured that the process is sanitary and safe. Only sterile and disposable needles are used to ensure that it is not contaminated with any bacteria. Technicians should also work with disposable gloves and must be wearing an apron and a hair cap at all times. Before booking your appointment, it helps to read up on reviews of your salon to make sure that you are placing your eyebrows in good hands. The last thing you want is to walk away with an infection due to unsanitary reasons.
