¿Qué te gusta comer? That means what do you like to eat, in Spanish. If your answer to that is Mexican food, you have come to the right place. In this article we will explore the delicious world of Mexican Cuisine in Singapore and the top Mexican restaurants you can visit to get your spicy fix.
Guacamole, burritos and tacos. Surely these dishes are the first that come to mind when we dream about hearty Mexican food. Mexican cuisine originated from agricultural communities such as the Mayans and has evolved over thousands of years to encompass the food we know and love today. Rogelio Granguillhome, the Ambassador of Mexico in Singapore, explains in the Business Times, “Mexico is a large country that spans almost 2 million square kilometres. Every region in the country has a unique style of cooking, with distinct tastes and flavours”. Little known to us, there is a whole range of appetizing foods unique to Mexican culture that you just have to try.
6 Mexican Dishes You Have Not Tried And Definitely Should

Menudo
Menudo, otherwise known as mole de panza, is a traditional Mexican soup. The main ingredient is beef tripe, which is the meat harvested from a cow’s stomach. Upon hearing this, people might be hesitant to try this lovely dish. But trust us, it is better than it sounds. This hearty soup is slow cooked in a rich broth made with a spicy chilli paste and fragrant herbs such as oregano and rosemary. It may seem a little out of one’s comfort zone but the meat is selected for its top quality and its nutrition. When cooked just right, it is perfect for a cold rainy day alongside a glass of iced lemon tea or even a steaming cup of sweet teh to compliment the spice.
Cabrito
If you love Satay, Char Siew and various other roasted meats, you will love this next dish. Cabrito is the roasted, and sometimes stewed, meat of a young goat. This delicacy hails from Monterrey, Mexico and is a specialty of this region. There are numerous variations in the recipes of Cabrito. You have Cabrito al pastor, where the meat is slow roasted on a spit without seasonings. Cabrito al horno is roasted in an oven and Cabrito en salsa is cooked is a beautiful sauce filled with tomatoes, garlic and of course, chilli. Any way Cabrito is cooked, it never fails to please the taste buds.
Pambazo
This is a delicacy for all the sandwich lovers out there. If you are looking for sandwich stuffed to the brim with potatoes and chorizo, drenched in a savoury sauce, you need a Pambazo in your hands. In plain words, Pambazo is a Mexican salsa drenched sandwich. What makes it so unique is the bread itself. The Pambazo bread is a white crust-less bread that is softer than regular white bread to allow it to retain its shape when it is dunked in the spicy sauce. While the bread is delicious in itself, it is the sauce that elevates it. The warm sauce is made with the guajillo red pepper, guaranteed to give you the spicy kick you crave.
Ceviche
If you enjoy sushi and sashimi, Ceviche is the dish for you. Similar to menudo, this dish may seem out of your comfort zone. But give this unique dish a chance and let it tantalize your taste buds. Ceviche is fresh raw fish, usually lean white fish such as yellowtail or White Sea bass, cubed and marinated with vinegar and citrus juices, seasoned with sliced onion, fresh mint, coriander and olive oil. This refreshing mix is usually served with lettuce leaves or with crunchy toasted bread.
Tamales
Although not commonly ordered by Singaporeans, Tamales is a household staple in Mexican cuisine. Tamales are a mixture of corn dough, also know traditionally as Masa, and a savoury meat filling. The slow cooked meat, usually chicken or pork is seasoned with chilli powder, garlic powder and ground cumin, smothered with vegetables such as potatoes, carrots and corn. The mixture is then shaped within the masa dough, wrapped and steamed in a corn husk. This comforting dish can be served with a side of frijoles, salad or even rice, sure to give you that warm feeling you only get from home cooked meals.
Chocolate Chilli Cake
So far we can tell that chili is a key ingredient in many Mexican dishes. But what happens when we mix chilli and dessert? What you get is a delicious luxurious concoction. When you a done with a hearty meal of Menudo, Cabrito, Pambazo and Tamales, the most splendid way to end the meal is to indulge in a slice of Chocolate Chilli Cake. This cake is made with rich chocolate and the mixture is sprinkled with a mild chilli pepper, usually chipotle or ancho chillies to add a spicy surprise to your dessert experience.
TEX MEX!
We cannot discuss Mexican food without talking about Tex-Mex. Tex-Mex, refers to Texan and Mexican cuisine. Although Tex-Mex is not considered authentic Mexican food, it is a fusion of Spanish, Mexican and American flavours beloved by many. Tex-Mex is characterized by ingredients not widely used in authentic Mexican cuisine such as shredded cheese, increased use of meat and beans. If you don’t have a taste for strong spices but still yearn for Mexican food, Tex-Mex is your next best option, with milder flavours and bolder dishes sure to satisfy your cravings.
Singaporeans and Mexican Food
Do Singaporeans enjoy Mexican food? The answer is YES! However most of us are more familiar with Tex-Mex food. There is so much more to Mexican food than hard shelled tacos, quesadillas and burritos. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, supper or even a light snack to go with your evening wine, Mexican food has you covered for every meal and craving. Here is a list of the Top Mexican Restaurants in Singapore. Surely after reading this article, your senses are anticipating the taste of some authentic Mexican food. Start your Mexican cuisine journey with our list today.

“One of the best Mexican food I’ve ever eaten. I had tacos with guacamole, and chicken quesadilla. They serve a generous portion. Staff are also very friendly, but very strict with the time. So I recommend making a reservation before going down. Decor was also really nice and they provide hand sanitisers at every table, which was really considerate” – Claudia Peh |

“Fabulous and delicious menu. We arrived for evening dinner in torrential rain which was a shame as the location at Customs House is perfect with great views to MBS and there is lovely outside seating. Excellent menu with appetizers, main course Tacos and Enchiladas and great cocktail choices. Very friendly and helpful staff and a member of staff even helped with the taxi walking us round to where it would collect us, so helpful particularly as we had only just arrived in Singapore and although we have visited the city a number of times over the years we were not familiar with Collyer Quay. Would not hesitate to recommend this casual Mexican restaurant.” – Wiltshire8 |

“Great lunch spot. Great lunch. Had the jalapeño spring rolls and spicy chicken street tacos. Good size portions. Plenty of space. Service was friendly and attentive. Let me have “taste” have a couple of the draft micro-brews to tell which one I wanted to order. Definitely will go back” – TCS |

“One of the best Mexican food in town. Served authentic Mexican food and you enjoyed the real vibe here. Tacos with prawn, short ribs and pull pork was really good. The beef fajitas, tequila chicken wing, nachos with belly pork must eat! The peach and passion fruit margarita was excellent but less alcohols to make you feel “good”. However, the table is rather small for 5 of us with drinks and foods comes at one time! So please do order slowly and order again if you want to eat more..! Else the service is fantastic and nice ambience!” – Andrew Goh |

“Staycation Dining. During a staycation at The W Hotel, we popped out for dinner at Two Chefs. It had come recommended, and we hoped it would live up to the great reviews we’d had. We were not disappointed! Super food, lovely menu and terrific service by the attentive and fun house staff. The restaurant was lively, despite being mid-week, but these two guys were well able to look after diners. Nachos are the best we’ve had in SG, Fajitas terrific. If you’re looking for a great dining spot around Sentosa, definitely pay this spot a visit.” – HappyDaysMama |

“Hip Mexican Watering Hole. Soak in the ambience of hipster Haji Lane while savouring delicious Mexican fare – freshly made on the spot guacamole was superb. Get the cheesy enchiladas loaded with grilled chicken, yummy! Their shrimp tacos is another winner. Then top is all with their heady orange mojito, we will be back.”

“Delicious Authentic Mexican. Decided to celebrate our wedding anniversary when Mrs craved some Mexican food. I had no experience with this cuisine so Mrs decided and no regrets. The dainty joint was booked up 1 week in advance. The waiting staff was friendly and was happy to recommend to us their signatures and popular dishes. Mrs had a strawberry margarita which was delicious and refreshingly good. I really liked the Portobello in Balsamic Vinegar. We ordered the signature Carne Asada and that did not disappoint and so was the light crispy house-made tortilla chips with the Red Salsa dip with a hint of spice. Yummy!” – DesLing0708 |

“Certainly the best Mexican find thus far in Singapore Explore a lot of Mexican eat outs in Singapore, some just have fancier places others do poorly on the taste and quality- this one came up as a surprise and just has become one of my favourite go to places whenever I crave for Mexican food. The best part, the food is served real hot and fresh, you don’t get that smell or feel things were pulled out of the freezers, cooked, garnished and served. Loved their soup, their tacos, and the quesadillas. Staff is very hospitable and service is prompt too.” – Shekhz |

“Great hangout spot! Had a great lunch here with a friend and would just like to write in for their friendly service. The staff was very approachable and accommodating to customer requests. Their food was simply delicious (Recommend the Chipotle chicken quesadilla), and the decor was aesthetically-pleasing to look at. Overall, loving the chill, rustic vibe that this place brings and would definitely come back again for another meal.”

“Being of Mexican origin, it is my opinion that El Mero Mero is the most authentic Mexican restaurant I have found in Singapore so far. The food is of good quality and presentation and quite tasty. They have a wide variety of offerings of Mexican cuisine and the ambience and location is great. I found service to be attentive although I did come at off hours so I can’t comment on the busy times. To those people who think that this food is bad they probably haven’t tasted authentic Mexican food before and assume that Mexican food equals cheap priced Chipotle or Taco Bell style fast food restaurants and need to do their research first. Hopefully they can get the experience of real Mexican food in Mexico one day” – Al Cadena |
Review #2 |
“A solid choice for more authentic Mexican food in Singapore. Tacos come like they would in Mexico City – no extra cheese or lettuce, just the right fillings. Had the Al pastor and loved them. Chicken tacos were more like fajita tacos, but very tasty. The drinks were good, but didn’t love them like I love some margaritas. All in all a very enjoyable experience.” – Melissa Eisner |

“Went here for lunch today and they had just opened. Good service and the food was fresh and well done. Their slightly Asian take on veggie fajitas was nice. Glad to have protein in my meal in the form of tofu. And the complimentary chips and salsa was nice too. Fajitas came sizzling on an iron skillet and the tortillas were nice and fluffy. Would have loved to have corn ones instead. And they unfortunately don’t have the Mexican beers anymore which are my favorite since I haven’t had them outside of US.” – Vijeta Ramachandran |

“Love their frozen lime margarita and the sangria Rojo. I kept alternating between the 2 all evening cause they were both really good. The pulled pork tostada is amazing!”

“We started eating at Los Jefes back when they were at Mt Sinai. Glad they’ve moved to NEWest because seating at the Mt Sinai premises was an issue. We’ve had various tacos, nachos and the chipotle meatballs and they are first-class! Love their horchata and fermented pineapple juice too– the latter has an amazingly refreshing acidic kick. Supermarket has lots of good stuff like (good) mezcal, lime squeezers and Salsa Valentina, my favourite hot sauce of all time. ” – Clarice Gan |

“Decent Mexican food, good casual ambient, and reasonable pricing. The place has been around for at least 10 years and food quality has remained consistent. Menu for both drinks and food are packed into a two pager, minimalist but definitely sufficent. Their quesadillas are my favorite and the toppings on their nachos were generous. “Best Tacos in Singapore, easily. Authentic food, little pockets of deliciousness makes you crave for more. Try the Baja Fish Taco and the Vegetarian Quesadilla slathered with Naga Ghost Pepper hot sauce. Absolutely to die for.
