As top fashion designer Tom Ford once said, “Dressing well is a form of good manners”. Whether you are attending a wedding event or meeting a potential business partner, an ill-fitting suit can make you look sloppy and unprofessional.
However, finding a suit with “the right fit” is not something that you can get from an off-the-rack suit. You will want to head to a bespoke tailor instead. While it will certainly be more expensive than a readily-available suit, a good suit is an investment. Take good care of it and it can last you 10 to 20 years.
If you are hoping to get a bespoke suit, here are some of the best men’s tailors for suits in Singapore:

Review | Excellent customer service, good material and design options, competitively priced Chanced upon this place by accident so gave Stitched Custom a chance and made a pair of pants and an office shirt to try. The set was made very nicely and QQ was very helpful and informative. While the pants were big, I had them altered and have not had any complaints since. Went back to make more shirts and pants and those turned out great too. Am planning to make more sometime next year. Have recommended them to my close mates too. – Imran Khan |

What is a “good suit fit”?
A good suit fit is more important than most people think! When you wear your suit, you are looking for a snug suit fit in your natural stance. This refers to when you are standing up straight with your arms relaxed at your side and preferably in the dress shoes that you will be wearing with your suits.
Given that it is not a very natural posture for most of us, it may feel awkward at first when the tailor is taking your measurements and when you are at your suit fitting. However, it is the base from which most of our movement flows. If the suit does not fit well in your natural stance, it is unlikely to move comfortably with your body either.
Ideally, you will want to look for a good fit in the following body areas:
- Shoulders
- Seat
- Trouser break
- Jacket closure
- Jacket sleeve length
- Jacket length
- Jacket collar
What to consider when purchasing a tailor-made suit
Whether you are buying your first suit for your wedding or a business event, or perhaps getting a new bespoke suit “just because”, there is a lot to consider.
To help you get started, here are some considerations when buying a tailor-made suit:
Purpose
First things first, where are you planning to wear your suit? Would this be for daily business use? A special occasion such as your wedding or an important business presentation? Would the occasion be formal or informal?
The list of questions can go on, but the idea is that it is important to know the occasion that you intend to wear the suit to. This will dictate the general style of your suit as well as the accessories.
Determine your budget
Have a budget in mind and be realistic about it. Sure, you may want to scrimp and spend less than $100 for a bespoke suit. But you can be sure that it will not last you more than a year.
However, that does not mean that you have to spend thousands of dollars on a brand new bespoke suit. To give you an idea of the price of getting a tailor-made suit, expect to fork out between $300 to $800 for a two-piece bespoke suit. A three-piece bespoke suit will typically set you back at around $1,000 onwards.
Fabric
When buying your suit, the fabric that you choose is an important factor to consider. Given Singapore’s hot and humid weather, you may opt to choose something lightweight and breathable. At the same time, you might want to consider the possibility of unsightly sweat stains when deciding on a fabric.
As a rule of thumb, go for wool and cotton as these fabrics tend to be lightweight and breathable. These two fabrics are also easy to care for. Avoid thick and heavy fabrics such as flannel and tweed as they are typically more appropriate for cold weather.
Bear in mind that the fabric you choose can also affect the price of your bespoke suit. In-house fabrics tend to be slightly cheaper than premium European and Italian fabrics.
Colour of suit
Regardless of whether you are purchasing your second, third, or nth suit, it is always good to go with versatile colours such as navy, blue, charcoal, or mid-grey. These colours are typically appropriate for all types of occasion and can be worn all year round.
There is no harm in choosing bold colours or patterned fabric. However, again, do bear in mind the occasion that you are purchasing the suit for before deciding on an appropriate colour.
Style of suit
As trendy or cool as the latest suit trends may seem, it would be wise to stay away from “it” trends and stick with classic suit styles. Fast fashion suits are not made for longevity and are unlikely to look good over time.
Keep to suits that have a classic styling – for instance a suit jacket with two buttons and notch lapels, and trousers with a flat front.
Depending on your body type, you may opt for a trimmer and more fitting suit. However, make sure that you are not going for a super skin tight suit that is very tapered and short at the ankles.
Ideally, you will want a suit that fits your body comfortably and is proportion to your overall body frame. If there are pulling creases in your jacket or trousers, it is a sign that your suit is too small is not the right fit for your body frame.
How to care for and clean your suit
Now that you have invested in a high-quality bespoke suit, ensuring that your suit is well-maintained can allow you to wear your suit for a long time.
While some may opt to send their suits to a laundry service, not everyone is able to enjoy that sort of luxury.
Here are some care and maintenance tips to ensure that your suit life lasts longer.
Rotate your suits
Similar to shoes, wearing the same suit over and over again may result in it wearing out quickly. If you need to wear a suit for several consecutive days, ensure that you rotate your suits to delay the wear-and-tear process.
Use a steam cleaner
Before wearing your suit, use a steam cleaner to remove any visible wrinkles on your suit jacket or trousers. That way, your suit will always look freshly-pressed and presentable.
It is also wise to ensure that the steam cleaner is set to the lowest heat setting to avoid burning your suit.
Allow your suit to hang for a day
After wearing your suit, hang it on a wood hanger for a day or two to allow the suit material to recover. This process also helps to even out most wrinkles between uses.
Make sure that all items are removed from your suit pockets to avoid creating odd-shaped creases in your suit.
Cover it up
If you are not wearing your suit anytime soon, the best way to store it is to hang it somewhere cool, dry, and away from direct sunlight. It should also be stored in a garment bag to prevent your suit from getting dust and moths.
If you have multiple suits, space them out evenly on your hanging bar to allow proper ventilation for your suits.
