Mathematics.
What’s your child’s first reaction when he/she hears this word? Does his/her eye gleam brightly with enthusiasm? Or does he/she heave out a loud, fearful sigh?
Mathematics, or Maths for short, is one subject that school students either love or hate.
If your kid loves the subject, getting him/her to finish up his/her homework will be a piece of cake!
However, if he/she falls under the other end of the spectrum, getting him/her to love Maths will require you to have the patience of a Saint! If you don’t have one, it’s understandable too!
Yet, don’t just go ahead to chastise your kid for either not completing the homework or repeatedly failing the Maths common test! Please understand that there’s nothing wrong with your kid! He/she may have a different set of talents. You can try getting your kid to attempt one of those hidden talent or strengths quizzes, and for all you know, his/her strength isn’t in numbers or logic. He/she may be a creative type or a more physically-inclined student.
However, while it’s important to honour and nurture your child’s talent, it’s also essential for your child to develop a deep understanding of Maths.
Why Is Maths Such an Important Subject?
Mathematics, alongside English and Mother Tongue, are subjects that are essential to your kid’s survival, not just in his/her academic progression, but also in the real world. Here are some other reasons why your kid needs to pay attention to Maths.
It’s a Must-Pass Subject to Qualify for Courses in the Polytechnic and Junior College
Here’s the deal. All polytechnic courses, except for Nursing, require your child to score at least a grade of C6. It doesn’t matter whether his/her overall O Level t-score is fantastic. It doesn’t matter whether he/she aced the rest of the subjects. As long as he/she fails Maths, it’s a no-deal.
On the flip side, if your child gets a D7 for English, he/she’s still able to qualify for the Engineering and IT courses in the polytechnic, as long as he/she passes Maths and meets the required cut-off point.
Take this from me. I had an ex-classmate who flunked Maths, but excelled in English and Art, ended up taking a private diploma instead.
If your child plans to enter junior college, passing Maths is also non-negotiable.
It’s a Stepping Stone to Better Understand Other Subjects
If your kid is facing issues in Maths, chances are he/she is also facing issues in subjects like Physics and Chemistry. Physics involves the understanding of lots of formulas, geometry and graph analysis. Maths is also crucial in Chemistry, where your child needs how to balance a chemical equation, which is the foundation of the subject. There are also lots of mathematical formulas you have to know to calculate things like the energy in reactions and the molecular mass of a chemical compound.
As your child progresses to post-secondary and tertiary education, more advanced knowledge of Maths may be required. This is to prepare them for their lives beyond graduation, which brings me to my next point.
Maths is the Key to Lucrative Careers in the 21st Century
According to an article from Brookings Institute, understanding Maths is crucial in the 21st-Century digital workplace. Aside from the popular STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) field, the arts industry surprisingly requires Maths too.
As someone who studied Digital Film years ago, the knowledge of Geometry is essential for camera framing and lighting purposes. Some video compositing software also requires geometrical calculations.
In the world of business, the knowledge of statistics is crucial for market research, making reliable business decisions, as well as forecasting future outcomes.
How to Get Your Child to Enjoy Learning Maths

Maths can be a challenging subject for students who have no natural inclination or passion for numbers and shapes.
However, there are ways to build up their aptitude and appetite for it.
Work with Their Mindsets
“You have to love the subject you teach and you have to love the kids and make them see that they have a chance, opportunity in this country to become whatever they want to,”
– Jaime Escalante, American Maths teacher who was immortalised in the Award-nominated movie, Stand and Deliver.
Working with a youth’s mindset is not unlike sales. To “convert” someone to buy into what you offer, you have to scale your offer down to match your child’s needs.
There’s no one-size-fits-all rule here. It really depends on how old your kids are. If they are in primary school level, include the element of fun in it. Get them to do some interesting Maths puzzles or involve them in artwork using shapes. This will help reduce their mental and emotional barrier towards Maths.
For upper secondary teenagers, it’s all about appreciation for the subject. In a scene from the movie, Stand and Deliver, teacher Jaime Escalante brought his wayward teenage students to visit a computer manufacturing plant. While it seems like the purpose was for them to understand the importance of Maths in the real world, the visit was to give them hope for a better future.
Likewise, for your own kids, you can get them interested in Maths by talking about how it can lead to great opportunities in future. I’ve already covered how junior colleges and polytechnics require at least a C6 Maths score to get accepted. The O Levels is a transitional stage for many youths. A significant portion of teenagers today want to pursue their passion. You have to stress the significances of how passing Maths is an essential entry stamp into pursuing their interests in a post-secondary environment.
Breakdown EVERYTHING into Small Steps

If Maths is already appearing overwhelming for your kid, don’t even expect them to grasp the first chapter within an hour.
Instead, help them understand the fundamentals of the formula on a step-by-step basis. Harness the power of graphs and other visualisation tools to better understand the topic.
Besides breaking down concepts into bite-sized information, you should also breakdown the study time into short interchanging intervals between study and rest. Telling them to sit for 2 hours will be a nightmare for them. Incentivise their efforts to study with a short break after 30-40 minutes. During the break, they should leave their study area and not engage in something mentally stimulating, like playing online games. Instead, going for a short walk, playing with their pets or anything that doesn’t require cognitive strength.
Find a Good Tutor
If your child is still struggling with Maths after various attempts to coach him/her, it’s time to find someone else who could do that for you.
When finding a tutor, find out about his/her past students. How much has their Maths results improved since they started tuition?
Do also consider the distance away from your home, as travelling could take up unnecessary time and energy for you and your child. You can also get the tutor to travel to your home. However, that may be costlier.
With the COVID-19 pandemic, many tuition agencies have also started offering online tuition, which could be a more economical option for you.
Here is a list of tuition agencies around Singapore for you to consider.

New Dawn Learning Studio |
About | In our JC Maths tuition classes, our objective is to address the difficulties commonly encountered by students. Thereby, every lesson is well-structured and delivered systematically to meet the learning needs of the students.
Very often, the lack of comprehensive materials for self-revision is an apparent hindrance to learning Maths. To overcome this problem, we’ve put together tailored and comprehensive study materials for our H2 Math tuition students. Materials given include one booklet, one formula sheet, and a set of homework with the aim of promoting independent learning. We also run a module of real-life application as part of our comprehensive Math learning experience. Annual workshops are organised in June and September for our A-Levels Maths Tuition students to facilitate pre-exam revision and enhance their learning journeys. |

Review | “Staying with new dawn for the past four years is definitely one of the decisions I made that id never regret! The lessons have challenged me, as questions become increasingly difficult as I move on. Whenever i meet a slump, daniel never fails to get me back up, helping me overcome greater heights. Despite not being in the chemistry classes, joseph remains approachable and is always willing to help me whenever I need help with chemistry. the staff at new dawn are always approachable, always giving us little treats and encouragement when we need it! with the help of the teachers and peers, my grades have definitely improved by leaps and bounds!” – Ng Rui Wen |
Review | “Went from F9 to A2 in Amath!! Mr Daniel is very patient tutor and his explanation is clear. The notes provided are also well organised which helped me a lot. The study environment is extremely conducive too, it allows you to recharge and focus well. I will definitely recommend to those taking Amath!” – Pamela Chan Yi Xuan |
Review | “I have been a student at New Dawn for 4 years and it has personally been my favourite tuition centre. The teachers there, Mr Daniel and Mr Joseph are both very kind, friendly, patient and encouraging. Lessons are effective as they both are able to cater to the needs each student(which I find quite unique about them in the sense that at conventional tuition centres lessons are just generalised and rather “survival of the fittest type” and not specifically aimed to assist every student with their work at their own pace). Learning materials provided by the tutors are helpful as well as they helped me to practice answering the different types of questions. Summary and formula sheets provided were super helpful when I was doing last-minute revision for my O levels. The environment is very cosy and homey as they have spaces where students can rest, relax and study. They also have a snack bar which I enjoy especially when I haven’t had the chance to have a proper meal before the lesson. Overall every aspect of New Dawn is top-notch, which makes it an enjoyable and satisfying experience to have lessons there.” – Orlando Loi |

Review | “I joined in Sec 2, and I can thank Miracle Math Tuition for my A1 streak. I have always struggled to find interest in math due to its tedious equations and uninteresting formulas. With Miracle Math’s help, I am able to find motivation to practise, as well as revise my math, which has helped me maintain good grades. The classes are small so it’s easier to make sure we all engage in class discussions, and the concepts taught are very clear-cut. The teacher ensures that we are all paying attention and the materials taught will be very useful during exams. In 2 hours you will be able to learn a lot, which is what made we enjoy classes every week. Please consider this tuition centre if you want to see quick improvements in math!” Sabrina, Cedar Girls’ Secondary School, Sec 2, A1 for Math |

Review | Although I have only been under you for a short period of about a year, I have already attended over 60 of your lessons and speaking from the bottom of my ♥ I have really enjoyed every single one of them because they are very enriching and fruitful. I enjoy coming for tuition not only because of your jovialness, but also because every time I leave your temple, I always leave with something new (for math of course!). Thank you for making Math a whole lot simpler and thank you for sharing all your shortcuts with me.
Although you refused to prompt me for the math problems occasionally, I know you did all those for my own good because you want me to learn to be independent. Once again, I really want to show my gratitude by officially calling you my idol. 谢谢! I will be back soon, promise!! PS. You make me happy when the skies are grey. -Lim Wei Wei |
