Full, pouty and luscious-looking lips have been made popular thanks to the likes of celebrities including Kendall Jenner and Angelina Jolie. Thick lips are viewed as a beauty asset as compared to thin lips, resulting in many wanting to have full lips in order to stand out.
Dream of having full and pouty lips like that of Angelina Jolie? With the help of lip fillers, you can achieve that desirable thick lips look!
What are lips fillers?
Lips fillers involve the injection of collagen or other filler materials into one or both of our lips.
One of the most common lip filler materials used would be hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occuring substance in the body, very much similar to collagen.
What can I expect after getting lip fillers?
While most people expect to get fuller and more voluminous lips after lip fillers, that may not be the case for everyone. Depending on the condition of your lips as well as face shape or any other facial features, the doctor will be able to advise on the lip volume accordingly.

What is the procedure to getting lip fillers?
The entire lip fillers process is relatively straightforward. As long as you are aware of the results and follow the post-treatment aftercare strictly, there is usually little downtime after the procedure.
Before the procedure, your lips will be numbed with a special topical numbing cream. The lip area to be treated will then be marked out by the doctor. Prior to the lip filler injections, some clinics may also use ice packs or special anaesthetic sprays to increase your comfort during the procedure.
Thereafter, the doctor will administer the injections on your lips depending on your treatment goal and target lips outcome. The entire procedure will typically take around 10 to 15 minutes. After the treatment, an antibiotic ointment and a hydrating lip serum will be applied to your lips. This prevents your lips from drying and keeps them hydrated.
How much filler is required to achieve my desired lip shape?
For most procedures, you will only need just 1ml of filler, which is equivalent to just 1 syringe. However, it is advisable to split the injections into a couple of different sessions. This is because the lip is an extremely sensitive area. Injecting the entire lip filler within one session may result in too much swelling. By splitting the procedure into various sessions, this helps to ensure that the fillers spread evenly under the lip skin, providing a more natural-looking result.
How long will the effects of lip fillers last?
Unfortunately, the effects of lip fillers do not tend to last very long given that our lips are extremely mobile regions. Hence, this results in the lip fillers breaking down faster as compared to other parts of the face such as cheeks or forehead.
Similarly, the effects also depend on a variety of other factors such as your lifestyle and the amount of lip fillers used. For instance, if you smoke regularly, the longevity of your lip fillers may be shorter. As a general guideline, the effects of lip fillers typically last anywhere between 6 to 9 months.
What is the downtime like after getting lip fillers?
After the lip filler procedure, you may experience swelling of your lips for the next 12 to 24 hours. However, the swelling is usually quite mild and not very visible. To minimise the swelling, you may put ice packs on the affected area intermittently.
In extremely rare cases, mild bruising of the lips may occur. This would usually only last for a couple of days. Some clinics may offer you the option of undergoing anti-bruise laser treatment to speed up resolution of the bruising. On your part, you can also minimise the risk of getting bruises after your lip filler treatment by avoiding alcohol or vigorous exercise 1 to 2 days before and after your treatment.
What are the potential side effects?
As with any aesthetic procedure, there is always the risk of side effects. This typically varies from individual to individual. The most common side effects are swelling and bruising.
The more serious side effects may include prolonged bruising or swelling, or lumps in the lips. Depending on the extent of bruising and swelling, it may also result in lip asymmetry, where parts of the lips are of different sizes. Infection may possibly occur at the injection sites, though that would usually in extremely rare situations.
Are lip fillers right for me?
The key question to ask yourself is: why do you want to modify your lips? Is it simply for aesthetic purposes? Or to address certain facial deformities at your lips? If you simply want a particular lip shape to fit into an ideal image, then perhaps you should think twice.
At the same time, it is important to be realistic about the outcome. The end result of your enhanced lips may not turn out to what you had in mind. Hence, it is important to consult with the doctor to discuss the various options and treatments available before you go for lip fillers treatment.
How can I go about choosing the right doctor?
The type of specialists that can execute lip fillers procedures are usually dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and cosmetic facial surgeons.
The key is to find someone that is credible and that you can trust. It is crucial to do your research and read reviews from past patients when looking for doctors for your lip fillers procedure.
When making a decision, enquire about the doctor’s educational qualifications, experience or certifications. If possible, request for before and after photos of past patients that the doctor has treated. This will allow you to view realistic results of past patients. If the doctor is unable to answer your questions or share further details, perhaps it is better to seek a second opinion.
