What do life coaches do

Life coaches act as mentors to people who seek help from them. They help their clients set realistic goals or clarify their current goals, identify the obstacles that the client is facing, and brainstorming and discussing on the strategies that can overcome each obstacle. When coming up with strategies to overcome the challenges client face, life coaches focus and target their client’s unique skills and make use of their client’s strengths.

Who needs life coaches

Clients who seek life coaches are often people who need guidance in navigating a significant part of their life or to find purpose in their life at a certain stage. Individuals who are experiencing mid-life crisis can also seek help from life coaches to figure out the next step in their life.

If you are someone who experiences:

  • Non-existence social life
  • Long periods of dissatisfaction in your career
  • At a loss on your purpose in life
  • Have no sense of direction in life
  • Struggles to break habits

You may want to seek help from life coaches who can help you find your direction in life, career or simply self-growth.

Types of life coaches

Relationship coach

Relationship coaches focus on building relationships with your friends, colleagues, family, and partners. They are the coaches to go to if you find yourself having increasing conflicts with your loved ones. Relationship coaches can help overcome the communication issues by offering you direct advice and bringing you closer with your loved ones. Relationship coaches can also provide guidance to young couples and married couples who are struggling with communicating with each other.

Career coach

A career coach comes into the picture when you have career-related issues such as finding a new job, considering a career switch in your mid-thirties or want to retire soon. People who want to advance in their respective careers or want to try setting up a business can seek help from a career coach. A career coach can also provide tips and tricks on how to find a job that suits your skillsets.

Finance coach

Finance coaches can help people meet their long-term financial goals. If you have issues with budgeting your money properly and have trouble paying monthly expenses, a finance coach can help you with your money issues.

Mental Heath coach

Mental health coaches can help people deal with specific emotions such as anger and grief. They can teach people skills related to how to manage their emotions better, improve communication with the people around them. However, as mental health coaches are not medical doctors, people with mental health issues such as depression and anxiety should not seek help from mental health coaches.

Health and Wellness coach

Health and wellness coaches help people along their journey with health-related goals such as their diet, fitness, and losing weight. Some of the health and wellness coaches out may be certified dieticians, nutritionists, and fitness trainers. While health and wellness coach are not medical doctors, they can help individuals set realistic and achievable goals regarding losing weight, incorporating a better diet and other related health issues.

Spiritual coach

A spiritual coach helps people to discover a deeper meaning in life. Spiritual coaches use spirituality to help people find ways to deal with their problems. Spiritual coaches are likely to be advocates of meditation and prayers and they usually specialise in a religion such as Buddhism and Christianity.

What can I expect from my first life coaching session

Your first meeting with a life coach is usually an introductory session. Your life coach will get to know you as a person probably through a chit-chat session, and go through the goals that you want to achieve by the end of the life coaching sessions. Many life coaches offer a free introductory session so that both of you can determine whether you will be a good fit working together. The first session is usually shorter than a typical life coaching session as it is mainly focused on exploration.

What to expect from subsequent life coaching sessions

Once you have found the right fit with a life coach, the subsequent sessions will be longer. You and your life coach will be having conversations about the specific goals you want to achieve and the obstacles that you are facing which prevent you from achieving those goals. Then, your life coach will work with you on ways to improve your situation and how you can make the right decisions that will bring you closer to your goals. Subsequent sessions might last anywhere between 45 minutes and an hour. You can schedule sessions to be as frequent as once every week or twice a month.

Your life coach may also assign you homework such as writing your reflection in a journal to complete before the next session.

How long does it take for me to see the effect of life coaching

You can expect to work with your life coach in the long term such as a few months or even years. This depends on individuals and the difficulty of the goals you set. Some people decide to stop working with their life coach once they have reached their goals, while others continue working with their life coach indefinitely and set new goals along the way.

Is a life coach necessary

Working with a life coach gives you a new, fresh and informed perspective on the struggles you face in life right now. A life coach offers you new insight into your current challenges and helps you get rid of bad habits that are hindering you in your road to success. Working with a life coach can help bridge the gap between your ideal life and your current situation.

While engaging with a life coach may help you navigate tough situations in your life, it is ultimately up to the individual whether they want to continue working with a life coach in the long term.
