How is LASIK being performed?
A femtosecond laser is used to create a 22mm circumference side-cut flap on the surface of the cornea. Then the flap is folded back.
Then, to correct the refractive errors, a second laser, also known as an excimer laser, accurately sculpts the corneal tissue.
The third and final step would be to reposition the flap, where it stays puts until the corneal fully heals.
Can LASIK be done in both eyes at once?
The answer is yes. While it might not be advisable in the olden days when LASIK was first introduced due to the high risks of infections in both eyes, and the inaccuracy of lasers back then.
Today, the above are no longer concerns, and the majority of LASIK surgery is done on both eyes in one sitting, which effectively minimises the downtime after surgery.
Preparation before LASIK
If you are using rigid gas permeable contact lenses, don’t wear them for minimum 14 days before your eye assessment. For other contact lenses type, don’t wear them 3 days before the assessment.
On the day of the procedure, have a light meal before going in, and take all the prescribed medications. No eye makeup and heavy accessories in your hair. If you’re feeling unwell, call your doctor for advice.
What happens during LASIK
You will be given numbing eye drops, and mild sedative can be requested. The entire procedure takes about 20 minutes.
What to expect after LASIK
Your eyes might feel dry. Prescription eye drops to prevent infection or inflammation, and to keep your eyes moist, will be given to you. When putting in the eye drops, you might feel a slight burn, or experience blurry vision. Do not use eye drops that are not prescribed to you.
What not to do after LASIK
To ensure you recover quickly and correctly during the rest period after the LASIK procedure, avoid doing heavy reading, work that requires a computer, and watching TV. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery during this rest period. No applying of eye makeup, and avoid getting your eyes in contact with water, even in the bathroom. Sorry, but you aren’t allowed to go swimming, hot tubs, hot yoga, jacuzzi, and sauna.
When exercising, use a headband to prevent sweat from dripping into your eyes, and refrain from doing contact sports of any sort.
Am I allowed to wear contact lenses after LASIK?
You should only put on coloured contact lenses and cosmetic 1 to 3 months after your LASIK surgery. However, do take note that your contact lenses may not fit your eyes as well as before due to the altered shape of your cornea post-surgery. Especially if you have dry eyes, the contact lenses tend to fall out easily.
A solution would be to have an optometrist prescribe contact lenses that are shaped in a way to fit your cornea better.
Does LASIK last forever?
Studies have found that more than 95% of patients continue to enjoy good vision even after many years since having their procedure done.
However, up to 6% of patients may require an enhancement procedure for myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism within 10 years of undergoing LASIK surgery.
You can still undergo surgery again to correct Cataracts, Glaucoma, and Macular Degeneration, which are eye diseases that occur as a result of old age.
Benefits of LASIK
LASIK offers:
- faster recovery
- reduced discomfort after the procedure
- relatively ease in early enhancements
- flexibility in treating a large range of eye power
- a shorter time (minutes) to complete the procedure
- little or no pain at all.
Risks of LASIK
Before deciding on a LASIK Procedure, do consider the risks of LASIK such as a potential of flap dislodgement resulting from trauma, and an occurrence of Corneal Ectasia. Though they are rare, do take these risks into consideration.
Side effects of LASIK
- Dry Eyes
- Fluctuating Vision
- Haloes
- Glares
- Light Sensitivity
- Itching Eyes
Not suitable for:
- People who are younger than 18
- People who have thin or uneven corneas
- People who have irregularly-shaped or steep corneas
- Pregnant or nursing women
- People with eye conditions like dry eyes
- People who are on medications
- People who have health issues like diabetes
- People who have recent changes to vision prescription
Suitable for:
- People above 18-years-old
- People with stable eye prescription for the past year
- People who are generally in the pink of health
Vision correction range
LASIK can correct myopia (short-sightedness) in the range of 100 to 1,000 degrees, Hyperopia (long-sightedness) of up to 350 degrees, and Astigmatism up to 350 degrees.
Price of LASIK
In Singapore, an average LASIK procedure is in the price range of $3,500 to $4,500. The reason for the $1,000 price difference is, some clinics might offer a pre-LASIK evaluation and charge it together as a one-time package, while others might charge pre-evaluation and the actual LASIK procedure separately.
Can Medisave or insurance policies be used for LASIK?
Illnesses do not include refractive errors, so, you can’t use either Medisave or insurance policy. An exception would be when there is a difference of at least 350 degrees between your eyes, and that you are intolerant to contact lenses and glasses.
Generally, for insurance policies, they do not cover LASIK procedures. However, some premium higher end has coverage for LASIK procedures, and some companies include LASIK procedures under corporate benefits. Cross-check with your insurance provider beforehand.
Conclusion
Like every other eye correction surgery, there are pros and cons to weigh before undergoing a LASIK surgery. Making a decision, or even thinking about going for an eye surgery sounds scary, but rest assured that your eyes are in good hands of as there professional LASIK eye clinics in Singapore.
Lasik may not be suitable for everyone. If you are one of those unsuitable LASIK candidates, fret not, there are other options like SMILE, Implantable Contact Lenses and Ortho-K night lenses to consider.
