Jewellery is an everyday fashion item that can be worn to accentuate your fashion style or to complement your outfit. Other times, jewellery is worn simply because it has a certain personal significance – family heirloom passed down for generations which serves as a reminder of our heritage, or for some, they collect pieces of jewellery as keepsakes to remind them of specific events that happened in their lives. Regardless of the reason, I think we can all agree that there’s something alluring about jewellery that we can’t just shy away from.
Types of materials used in making jewellery
Diamonds
They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, and it is not difficult to see why. Known to be a symbol of love, romance and commitment, diamonds are highly coveted for their glamour and charm. And even though diamonds have been around since some 2,400 years ago, they will never lose their classic appeal.
Gem Stones
Apart from diamonds, the demand and interest for other coloured gemstone jewellery have also been on a rising trend, with the value of some large rare coloured gems even surpassing that of diamonds. Rare gemstones like rubies, emeralds and sapphires are popular for their intense hues and magnificent saturation of colours, making it easy and fun to play it up for different occasions and purposes.
Gold
Gold is renowned for its lustre and durability and has been recognized since primitive times as a symbol of wealth and luck, while some wear them as a means of boosting their confidence. Gold jewellery, in its purest form, does not rust or tarnish, due to the fact that it does not combine with oxygen as easily as other metals. With that being said however, it is extremely rare to find a pure gold accessory as base metals such as brass and copper are typically alloyed alongside gold to create stronger and longer lasting jewellery.
Sterling Silver
Sterling silver is an alloy made from pure silver and other trace metals, and is one of the most commonly used metals in high-end jewellery and accessories. Compared to gold, sterling silver pieces are typically less expensive than the former, due to the difference in rarity. The popularity of sterling silver is much attributed to its softer and malleable qualities, making it a popular material used in creating dainty pieces such as earrings, bracelets and rings.
Pearls
Another star in the realm of jewellery creation is the use of pearls. Pearls are natural and organic, making it one of the more environmentally friendly materials amongst them all. And as the society places more emphasis on sustainability, it is no wonder why accessories made from pearls are becoming highly sought after these days. Pearls come in all shapes and sizes, making it easy to pair with other gems and metals to create a versatile look.

Tips on caring for your bling
Let’s face it, as much as we try our best to preserve the shine in our jewellery, they mostly end up tarnished or turn grimy over time, especially in a country as humid as Singapore. Here are some tips and tricks on how best to keep the sheen on for as long as possible.
Store your jewellery away carefully
Keeping your jewellery in a box when you’re not wearing them helps to keep the sunlight, moisture and other airborne substances that may cause tarnishing at bay. If you don’t own a jewellery box, Ziploc bags work just as fine!
Give your jewellery a quick clean after each wear
Gently washing your jewellery with some water and a soft cloth after each wear helps to get rid of the skin oils, perfume and makeup accumulated throughout the day and prevents tarnish from forming on your jewellery. Thereafter, make sure the jewellery is entirely dry before storing it in your jewellery box.
Keep chalk or silica pack as companions
Moisture is one of the main culprits for tarnish. Putting chalk or a pack of silica in your jewellery box helps to absorb any moisture that may cause tarnishing and would prolong the lifespan of your jewellery.
In the event where tarnish finds its way to your jewellery…
Remove tarnish with a polishing cloth
Precious metals such as sterling silver and lower karats of gold are more prone to tarnish over time. Polishing cloths help to remove the tarnish and are soft enough to not damage the metal. These cloths can be used until they turn black but they shouldn’t be washed as washing might strip them of the chemicals used to eliminate tarnish.
Use ultrasonic cleaners (with caution)
While this unconventional method has been proven to be effective for removing the grime and dirt from hard-to-reach places on your intricate pieces, it does not entirely remove tarnish. Jewellery with hard gemstones such as diamonds, rubies and sapphires are generally safe to clean using ultrasonic cleaners but the same might not work on other gemstones and pearls. Word of caution – avoid using ultrasonic cleaners unless you have done ample research and are really certain it’s suitable for your jewellery.
Factors to consider when choosing jewellery
One of the factors which many people tend to overlook when purchasing jewellery is their skin sensitivity. If you’re someone with a metal allergy, choosing something that is mixed with a high percentage of metal base such as brass or copper will cause excessive itching and scabbing. Most people with metal allergies are allergic to nickel, which can be found in lower-priced jewellery, as they are durable and cheap to produce.
Investing in hypoallergenic fine jewellery might sound like a silly idea for some because of its relatively higher prices, but the long-term benefits of investing in such quality jewellery far outweigh the short-term benefits of buying unsuitable products at a cheaper price which could lead to medical issues. Plus, you do not need to break the bank investing in quality nickel-free jewellery as there are lots of hypoallergenic options to choose from which are just as affordable.
