Top Healthy Food Restaurants In Singapore

Top Healthy Food Restaurants In Singapore

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “The first wealth is health”.  A huge part of our daily lives revolves around food. Eating well thus contributes greatly to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. A healthy life starts with a healthy plate.

What You Need On Your Plate

In order to make healthy eating a part and parcel of your life, you need to be aware of what goes on your plate for each meal. A healthy plate looks like this:

Fruits and Vegetables

Half of your plate should be filled with fruits and vegetables. The more colourful, the better. Each colour pigment on your plate gives you an added health benefit. Red fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, radishes, and beetroots protect your heart. They are filled with antioxidants that reduce the risk of diseases such as cancer and hypertension. Fruits and vegetables of the blue variety, such as eggplant, purple cabbage, plums, and blueberries promote healthy aging and improve memory function. Orange and Yellow fruits and vegetables can boost your immune system and build strong bones. These can include pumpkins, carrots, peaches, and apricots. Spinach, Broccoli, limes, and kiwis are examples of green fruits and vegetables that can regulate cholesterol levels and promote eye health. The rainbow on your plate will guarantee sunshine in your life.

Fruit juices are the enemies of a healthy diet. They are full of sugar and contain none of the nutrients you can attain from a whole fresh fruit. Be it store bought or freshly squeezed, it is best to avoid fruit juices and enjoy whole fruits instead. As an added tip; for better digestion, consume your fruits either before your meal or at least 30 minutes after your meal.

Protein

Proteins form the building blocks of your body and ensure that your body has what it needs to repair its muscles and tissues. Fill a quarter of your plate with meat or other sources of protein. Recommended protein sources are Poultry, such as chicken and turkey as well as Red meats, such as mutton or beef and best of all Fish, such as salmon or tuna steaks. It is advised to eat at least 2 servings of fish per week as their omega-3 fatty acids are essential for a healthy heart. If you have a vegetarian or vegan diet, you can swap the meats for bean-based products such as tofu or tempeh for an equally delicious and nutritious alternative.

Carbohydrates

The final quarter of your plate should be dedicated to carbohydrates. Although the usual favorites people turn to are white rice, pasta, and potatoes, there are various healthier options you can explore. These include whole grains such as brown rice, wholemeal bread, wholemeal pasta and even quinoa or rolled oats if you are feeling adventurous. Whole grains are filled with vitamins, minerals, and dietary fibre. Eating more whole grains instead of refined grains such as white rice and white bread allows you to maintain a healthy weight that contributes to overall heart health and reduced risk of diabetes.  For a healthy tip; if you prefer eating rice over other whole grains, try basmati rice instead. It has a lower glycaemic index which means it releases energy slowly, keeping you full and satisfied for longer.

Healthy Fats

When we speak of a healthy diet, the term ‘Fats’ seems to have a negative connotation. However, not all fats are bad for you. Healthy fats are important and crucial to maintaining a healthy system. They promote cell growth and help your body absorb nutrients. Examples of healthy fats could include avocados, peanut butter, olive oil as wells as walnuts, flaxseeds, and sunflower seeds. These foods contain Monounsaturated fat and Polyunsaturated fat respectively and are excellent for regulating your cholesterol levels.

Water

Nothing quenches thirst quite like plain old H20. Sugar is the greatest contributor to weight gain. You can eliminate this risk by avoiding sugary canned drinks or fruit juices and opting for fresh water. Water not only promotes weight loss, it also reduces cravings, fatigue and headaches throughout your day. Drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day will keep you functioning at your best.

Snacks

It is normal to feel peckish during the day. But instead of reaching for a bag of potato chips or a chocolate bar, grab a piece of fruit, a protein bar or handful of walnuts. If you have a sweet tooth, try snacking on dark chocolate. Dark chocolate is higher in cocoa content, and thus lower in sugar. It still allows you to indulge in that chocolatey goodness with the added benefits of antioxidants and fibre. Choosing whole foods for your snacks keeps you full throughout the day and stops you from craving processed treats. This way you can snack guilt free while maintaining a healthy weight and diet.

Trends In Healthy Diets

We are all familiar with vegetarianism but new trends in healthy eating have emerged over the past few years. Here are a few:

Veganism

Veganism is the practice of not only eating but living in a manner that shifts away from exploiting animals. Vegans do not consume any form of animal products such as meat, dairy, eggs, and even honey. David Steinman reveals in his book “Living Healthy in a Toxic World”, that dairy products and beef are the primary sources of nuclear contamination in humans. Meat and dairy production also consumes a great amount of our land and water resources. According to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, almost 70 percent of the world’s water is consumed by the farming industry. Veganism is thus not only healthy for us but for the environment as well.

Raw Veganism

Similar to veganism, raw vegans avoid all animal products. However, they take it a step further to avoid cooking their meals as well. Raw veganism dictates that food should be consumed raw or heated only to the temperature of 40 to 48 degrees Celsius.  This may seem a little strange but believe us, a raw vegan diet can still guarantee nutritious and delicious meals. Raw vegan meals are rich in vegetables, fruits, seeds and nuts as well as sprouted grains. This diet is believed to contain more nutrients than diets that contain cooked food. It is also said to provide multiple health benefits such as improved digestion, improved heart health and reduced risk of diabetes due to the complete lack of processed food within the diet.

Pasta was tasty but the highlight was the sweet potato mash! Loved the sweet potato mash so much. Definitely a must try! Went during lunch hour on a weekday. It gets crowded really fast but a comfortable setting to have a catch up and chat with friends and colleagues. Going back there again for sure :)” – Muna

If you have a small appetite, you may change the soy patty (not all burgers) to Impossible patty which is less dense yet equally delicious. Try adding either egg or bacon to the burgers for a better experience.  Check out this place if you are in the East side!” – wkwsci 149

“This place is a literal HIDDEN GEM! Although it is a walk out (about 10 min?) from Raffles Place MRT, you’ll be instantly rewarded with the amazing ambiance, friendly service crew and delicious food! The entire restaurant gives off a really chill vibe with eclectic art pieces around the restaurant with a touch of greenery. I feel like I’ve teleported to a holiday destination! The interior is rather spacious so you get quite comfortable snuggling up with your groups of 5 pax and yet the table is just the right size to plate your main dishes and sides to share! We all had the opportunity to build our own burger so it was really fun! The servings were great and hearty and the loaded sweet potato fries were BOMB! Juices I feel are a must try too! We ordered the “greenest” juice there is in the menu, but it turned out tasting so amazing, it was unbelievably yummy!! Overall, I had an amazing experience just enjoying a good meal with friends! Will come back again with a group of friends to share more sides and try all the other delicious food!” – Shermaine Tan

“Healthy and delicious bowls which you can customise with your own toppings. This place can be crowded during office lunch hours. A queue may form for the bowls. However, as food is served fast, the queue moves quickly. Due to safe distancing measures, dining in seats are limited. I particularly like their quinoa which is light and firm without being overcooked or mushy. A 9.00 bowl was very filling and generous amount of chicken was given. I can definitely see why this is very popular among the busy office folks who still wish to have a balanced and healthy diet! Vegans and vegetarians will find much they can choose from here!” -Crystal Ang
