What is Hair Colouring?
Hair colouring is the process of changing your hair colour.
In the scientific context, hair colouring is akin to a chemical reaction. The first commercial hair colour product was made in 1909, by French scientist Eugene Schuller.
Today, hair colouring is widely popular and done by both women and men alike.
Why do People Colour Their Hair?
There are many reasons why people choose to colour their hair. Some may want to conceal their graying or white hair. Others may want to change it to a more fashionable colour. And there is a group of people that may want to restore their original hair colour after colouring or bleaching it multiple times.
Regardless of the reason, hair colouring can be done at home or professionally.
How much does it cost to get my hair coloured at a salon?
Hair colouring services differ from salon to salon. The price of the hair colour service depends on the colour you choose as well as the treatment that you want.
Single-toned colours tend to be cheaper as opposed to a mixture of hair colours. Whether you decide to colour your entire head of hair or just highlights, this also affects the cost of getting your hair coloured.
What should I consider before getting my hair coloured?
Getting your hair coloured is no doubt exciting. After all, seeing how celebrities or social media influencers rock a particular hair colour, you may feel inclined to try out that hair colour for yourself.
However, before you make up your mind on a particular hair colour, think about the maintenance. Depending on the colour that you choose, it may require more upkeep to retain its original colour shade. You will need to consider how often you have to visit the salon and budget for the treatment costs each time.
Another key factor to consider is whether the hair colour that you are deliberating on fits in your overall lifestyle and work. Does your workplace allow employees to come in with vibrant hair colours? Do you have outfits that will match your new hair colour?
If you are considering vibrant hair colours, it is advisable to keep it hidden so that you have the option to look professional yet chic and funky at the same time.
What are some of the common hair colouring terms?
Semi-coloured and permanently-coloured
Semi-coloured hair typically involves coating hair dyes on the outside surface of the hair. As such, these hair dyes are often washed out in five to seven weeks. Semi-colours are ideal if you are undecided as to which hair colour to go with and just want to try a particular hair colour before making the commitment.
Permanently-coloured hair typically follows a two-step process: First, it involves opening of the hair follicle before depositing permanent hair dye. This ensures that the chemical reacts with the inner part of the dye. Thereafter, it deposits the new hair colour. Hair conditioners are then used to seal and protect the hair colour
Single and double
This refers to a single or double hair colouring process. Single process simply means that your chosen hair colour is applied directly onto your hair. This can help to lighten or darken the hair.
Double process involves lightening your original hair colour first before the hair stylist applies your chosen hair colour. This process is typically used when the hair stylist needs to lighten your hair colour by more than two shades.
Coloured highlights
Highlights or lowlights is the process of changing your hair colour by adding colour that is darker or lighter to pieces of your hair. This type of hair colouring is ideal for those who do not want to colour their entire hair, but still want to go for an edgy coloured hair look. There are plenty of hair highlighting techniques today, such as foiling and balayage technique.

Had the courage to make an appointment on this and went to Walking On Sunshine.Overall experience, it was VERY VERY GOOD!!! 10X BETTER than the previous Korean Hair Salon I have visited. Most importantly, NO Hard-Selling tactics and also fixed price rather than anyhow charging. |

Review 1 | What a great team! – Professional, personal and discrete. Hair and beauty treatments, uniquely tailored for you as an individual. They had taken the time, every time to ensure that my highlights were so fine on the hairline that regrowth was very subtle – not what you find elsewhere, around the world in most places I am sure. Either the best procedures are used, or they bring in the best in their field to fulfil their clients needs, through years of continuous research and feedback. Such giving and warm people, who always have the time for you |

Review 1 | Was recommended by my mom to try Chez Vous for a cut and colour. She also told me Readen gave her a good cut and so I decided to try after not doing my hair for a long time. Readen and his technical assistant Winnie were extremely meticulous and kind to me. During the consultation, Readen listened to me and knew exactly what I wanted to achieve. He also understood my hair texture very well and I noticed this a few days after leaving the salon that my hair did not turn into hay after it was bleached. Readen and Winnie knew I was very tired and were sweet enough to create a curtain with my hair foils so I could sleep! I was also not there for hours and hours because they have a special hair iron that takes the brass out of Asian bleached hair without damaging it, and yet getting to a level light enough for my highlights to be seen. They were so friendly and accommodating that I really felt at home. Overall, I was and still am so satisfied with the service and level of professionalism at Chez Vous. There was zero hard selling and absolutely no forcing down of “I think you should do this to your hair” – which is what I really appreciated. I will definitely be coming back here to do my hair again! Thank you so much Chez Vous, Readen and Winnie! |
Review 2 | 1st visit to the salon and was very pleased with the overall experience. Started off with a very friendly lady who answered my calls n followed up to remind on my appointment. My stylist was Veyond, together with technician Charles. Both were very very attentive to details and listen patiently to my preference/comments, doing all they can to achieve what I wanted for my hair. I did Rebonding and had the bouncy hair I wanted even though my hair was really coarse and frizzy and with super strong natural curls. Will definitely go back to Veyond again when I need to do my hair. Very friendly follow-up again to check on my hair today after my Rebonding yesterday. Thumbs up for the superb experience from the time I make appointment to even the day after my hair was done! |
Review 3 | It was my first time at Chez Vous and picked it due to their amazing reviews. My experience was wonderful! My hair looks awesome and I feel great about it. Joyce is super professional and made magic with my super long and damaged hair!! I do want to highlight overall Chez Vous’ approach to customer experience is extraordinary and quite special in general. Easy and attentive communication, details to make live experience comfortable for customers, actually listening and suggesting to customers based on their needs, no hidden fees, etc. Many industries would benefit from such a professional approach which seeks customer delight, beyond plain customer satisfaction! Thank You! |
What are the common factors that may affect how my hair takes colour?
Hair colouring is not as straightforward as it seems. When you choose your desired hair colour, it may not always turn out according to what you had in mind.
Most of the time, this is due to your hair’s health and texture.
Health of the hair
Healthy hair typically holds on to colour best. If your hair is damaged or dry, the hair colouring may fade quickly over time.
Some medications may also affect the health of your hair. If you are undergoing certain medical treatment or taking certain drugs, such as hormonal pills, it is best to let your stylist know as they may affect your hair’s receptivity to hair colour dyes.
Texture of the hair
At the same time, finer hair tends to lighten faster. Hence hair stylists may need to use gentle and semi-permanent chemicals during the hair colouring process. On the other hand, coarser hair is often more colour-resistant and will require more potent hair colour products to ensure the hair colour stays longer.
Hair history
The history of your hair also makes a difference! Certain hair treatments in the past may affect how your hair takes colour in the future. Hair colouring treatments such as Herbal Hair Colour or Henna Hair Colour may coat your hair shaft, making it difficult for other coloured chemicals to penetrate. This may eventually affect how certain hair colours turn out.
How do I maintain the hair colour after I leave the salon?
After spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on your hair colouring treatment, the last thing that you want is for your hair colour to fade quickly.
Hence, it is crucial that you adhere to the hair stylist’s maintenance tips to ensure that your hair colour lasts longer!
Hair colour often fades due to prolonged exposure to sun, humidity, and oxidation. After colouring your hair, invest in a good shampoo and conditioner that is specifically made for coloured hair. This can help to ensure that your hair colour lasts longer.
How Much Do You Need To Color Your Hair?
If you’re thinking about colouring your hair, you’re probably curious about how much money that will end up costing you. The answer is not a straightforward one, which is regrettable.
The price that you pay to have your hair coloured can vary greatly based on a number of factors, such as the type of colouring that you select, the length and thickness of your hair, as well as the location that you live in.
In this section, we’ll discuss the various aspects that contribute to the overall cost of colouring your hair, as well as give you an idea of what to anticipate when it comes time to schedule your appointment at the salon.
Types of Hair Dyeing
One of the most important aspects that will determine how much money you spend on your hair colouring appointment is the type of hair colour that you decide to have. The following are some of the most popular kinds of hair colouring, along with a ballpark estimate of how much money you should expect to spend on each one:
- Semi-permanent hair color: This type of color is the least expensive option, typically ranging from $15 to $30 per appointment. Semi-permanent hair color does not penetrate the hair shaft, and instead sits on top of the hair, so it gradually fades over time.
- Demi-permanent hair color: This type of color is a step up from semi-permanent color, and typically lasts for up to 24 shampoos. It’s slightly more expensive, ranging from $30 to $50 per appointment.
- Permanent hair color: This type of color is the most expensive option, but it’s also the most long-lasting. Permanent hair color can last for up to eight weeks, and typically costs between $50 and $100 per appointment.
- Highlights and lowlights: If you’re looking to add some dimension to your hair, highlights and lowlights are a great option. Highlights are lighter pieces of hair that are woven into your natural hair color, while lowlights are darker pieces. The cost of highlights and lowlights varies widely depending on the number of foils used, but you can generally expect to pay between $75 and $150 for a full head of highlights or lowlights.
- Balayage and ombre: These are two of the most popular hair coloring techniques at the moment. Balayage is a freehand technique that creates a natural-looking, sun-kissed effect, while ombre is a technique that gradually fades from dark to light. Balayage and ombre can be more expensive than traditional highlights and lowlights, with prices ranging from $100 to $250 per appointment.
The Length and Thickness of the Hair
Your hair’s length and thickness are also significant elements that will play a role in determining the final price of your hair colouring procedure.
When colouring longer, thicker hair, you will need to use more product and devote more time to the process than when colouring shorter, finer hair.
This indicates that you should prepare yourself to spend a higher fee for your session if you have longer or thicker hair than the average person does.
The good news is that many salons offer multiple pricing tiers based on hair length, which means that you may be able to save some money if your hair is shorter because many salons offer different pricing tiers based on hair length.
Make sure to enquire with your stylist about whether or not they provide different pricing levels dependant on the length or thickness of your hair.
Locations
Last but not least, the price of hair colouring might differ substantially from one region to another.
The prices that hair salons in major cities charge for their services are typically higher than the prices that hair salons in smaller towns or rural areas charge. This is due to the fact that the cost of living is typically higher in cities, which necessitates salons increasing their prices in order to pay their operating expenses.
Consider looking for a hair salon in a smaller town or in the suburbs if you are on a tight budget. There is a good chance that you can get excellent styling at a price that is more reasonable.
Advice on Cutting Costs While Dyeing Your Hair
If you want to avoid spending a lot of money on your visit to get your hair coloured, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Choose a lower-maintenance color: If you’re on a tight budget, consider choosing a lower-maintenance hair color option, such as semi-permanent or demi-permanent color. These types of color don’t require as much upkeep as permanent color, so you can save money in the long run.
- Look for deals and discounts: Many salons offer deals and discounts on hair color services, especially for first-time clients. Be sure to do some research and look for coupons or promotions before booking your appointment.
- Ask about pricing tiers: As we mentioned earlier, many salons offer different pricing tiers based on hair length and thickness. Ask your stylist if they offer this, and if so, whether you can save money by choosing a lower pricing tier.
- Book during off-peak times: Salons tend to be busier on weekends and during peak hours, which means that they may charge more for their services during these times. If possible, try to book your appointment during off-peak hours, such as weekday afternoons or evenings.
- Consider DIY options: If you’re comfortable with the idea of coloring your hair at home, you can save a significant amount of money by purchasing a box of hair color at your local drugstore. Just be sure to follow the instructions carefully, and do a patch test first to make sure you’re not allergic to the ingredients.
To summarise, the cost of colouring your hair can vary greatly based on a number of factors, such as the type of colouring you select, the length and thickness of your hair, as well as the location in which you live.
Make sure to consult with your stylist and enquire about any pricing tiers or promotions they may be giving in order to obtain an accurate estimate of the cost of your hair colouring appointment. This will allow you to determine how much your appointment will cost.
If you are trying to save money but are on a limited budget, don’t be afraid to look for sales and discounts or to consider doing things yourself so that you may cut costs.
How to Color My Hair When its Damage?
Coloring your hair is an excellent technique to give your overall appearance a facelift and inject some life into your personal style.
On the other hand, if your hair is damaged, you could be concerned about whether or not colouring it is still a good idea.
The good news is that you can still colour your hair even if it’s damaged, but the bad news is that you’ll need to take some additional care to make sure that you don’t do any more harm to your hair in the process.
In the following section, we will discuss some helpful hints that may be used while colouring your hair even if it is damaged.
Do a Needs Analysis.
The first thing you need to do before dyeing your damaged hair is to determine how severe the damage is. If your hair is extremely damaged, you should probably wait to colour it until it is in better condition before you attempt to do anything to it. This is due to the fact that already damaged hair is more susceptible to experiencing further breakage as a result of the colouring procedure.
It’s possible that you’ll be able to colour your hair as long as you take the necessary safeguards, provided that its damage isn’t too severe.
Split ends, dryness, and breakage are indicators of moderate damage to the hair. If your hair is extremely fragile and breaking off in huge pieces, it is in your best interest to wait until it is healthy before colouring it.
