What Haematologists Do
A haematologist is a medical specialist in haematology, which is also known as the related study of blood, blood-forming organs and blood diseases. This also means that the scope of a haematologist is mainly concerned with the treatment of blood disorders and blood related medical diseases or illnesses, such as haemophilia, leukemia, lymphoma, anaemia (lack of blood), blood narrow and lymphatic issues.
In a medical department filled with all kinds of doctors, haematologists are in fact, internal medicine doctors who have specific studies in blood related medical conditions and medicines that examines body tissues and blood cells.
Requirements of Haematologists
All haematologists are required to have at least 9 years of medical education in relevant schools. The duration of education includes at least 3 years of on-the-job training (OJT), also known as residency program after attending their respective medical schools. Followed by the OJT, they are required to experience 4 years of subspecialty training – for potential haematologists to determine whether they want to be generalists, or focus on specific medical conditions that require more meticulous attention.
This is why a haematologist is required to spend at least 7 or more years of medical school, OJT and subspecialty training, before earning a legitimate certification in the medical field. Moreover, potential haematologists need to spend at least 2 years of specialty training, studying a range of haematological disorders, before operating in public or private clinics / hospitals. In other circumstances, some haematologists can gain further certification in other subspecialty.
When To Visit A Haematologist
You’ll most likely have to visit a haematologist if you have the following condition(s):
- Anemia, or low red blood cells (causing lightheadedness)
- Blood clots (such as hemOphelia)
- Leukaemia
- Lymphoma, or anything to do with bone marrow, lymph nodes or red and white blood cells
- Sepsis (risky reaction to infection)
- Sickle cell diseases
In often times, you might not be able to see your haematologist face-to-face but they often work closely with your primary doctor to analyse your test results or examine your current medical condition.
What To Expect During The Visit
During the visit, a lab technician will take your blood sample. This blood sample process will take only a few minutes (3 to 5 minutes) before getting your test results after a few days. In cases where you have a long-term blood-related medical condition, such as haemophilia, you probably will see your primary doctor and get your conditions examined by a haematologist regularly.
