Should I believe in fortune telling
Fortune telling is dismissed by the scientific community and labelled as based on magical thinking and superstition. However, many people who have been to fortune telling services have claimed that the readings are accurate and some truth.
Fortune telling methods
Face reading
Face reading is the interpretation of facial features of the nose, mouth, eyes and other parts of a person’s face. The facial features are converted into predictions for the person’s future.
Palm reading
Palm reading is also known as palmistry. It is a method that analyses a person’s palm and the positions of the various lines on the palms that are said to represent different aspects of life such as love, marriage, personality, and health.
Kau Cim
This technique requires a bamboo cylinder to perform. The person holding the bamboo cylinder would shake it continuously and vigorously until at least one modified incense stick drop out from the cylinder. There are Chinese characters inscribed on the stick and are analysed by an interpreter. The prediction is short-range as it covers only one Chinese calendar year.
Bazi
In the Chinese fortune telling methods, this method is undoubtedly the most popular and the most accessible. Generally, it involves taking four information of a person – the hour of birth, the day of birth, the month of birth and the year of birth. This information each forms a pillar from the Sixty Jiazi and they are arranged into Four Pillars. The Four Pillars are then analysed against the Daymaster.
However, Bazi is a form of astrology rather than fortune telling as it tells individuals about their destiny in life, current situation and the career sector they should go into.
Astromancy
Astromancy, also known as astrology, is a fortune telling method based on the divination of the stars. This method is often used to interpret celestial cycles and predict seasonal shifts in a calendar year.
Numerology
Numerology is any belief in the divine relationship between a number and coinciding events. Numerologists are people who draw pseudo-scientific inferences from numerical patterns.
Tarot cards
Tarot card readings are the practice of using a specific set of cards to gain insight into the past, present or future by formulating a question, then drawing and interpreting cards. A typical tarot card deck consisting of 78 cards can be further split into two groups – the minor arcana and major arcana.
Fengshui
Feng shui is the practice of arranging furniture in living space to create balance with the natural world. The end goal of Fengshui is to harness energy forces and establish harmony between an individual and their living environment. The concept of Fengshui is derived from an ancient poem that talks about human life being connected and flowing with the environment around it.
Geomancy
Geomancy is a divination method that works by interpreting marking on the ground of patterns formed by Mother nature – soil, rocks, sand. Geomancy requires a geomancer to create sixteen lines of points or marks without counting and creating sixteen random numbers.
Once the lines are produced, the geomancer then marks the points two by two until one or two points remain in the line. The leftover points form the first four geomantic figures and form the basis for generating the remaining figures. After the geomantic reading is completed, the geomancer proceeds to do the algorithmic calculation.

Then, they inform the clients that they are under a curse and would need to pay a large sum of money for the casting of a spell to remove the curse.
