In a nutshell, facials are a multi-step skin treatment that cleanses and nourishes the skin from start to finish. Facials are not just a great way to revive your skin, but also to unwind and take a breather as well. In this piece, we take a deeper look into the various steps in the facial process and some of its benefits.
Things to Know Before Your First Facial
While getting facials sounds always sounds like a good idea, here are a few things to note before getting your first one.
Facials are not quick fixes
More often than not, people think that facials are a one-time thing that can cure all their skin concerns in just one visit. However, facials are more preventive than they are curative. Facials require several regular appointments that were made for the purpose of maintenance.
Go to a trusted salon or esthetician
Always do your research before deciding on which facial salon to go to. Make sure they have good safety standards and are reputable in the industry. These reputable and esteemed salons may cost more than the average facial clinic, but it’s better to invest in a quality treatment than to pay less for a sub-par facial.
Inform your doctor about your allergies or any medical conditions
It is always important to let your esthetician know if you are pregnant or have specific product allergies before starting your treatment. For pregnant women, there may be some products that are not suitable for them. The last thing you want is to get an allergic reaction to what you thought was going to be a relaxing experience.

Freia Aesthetics is renowned for adopting a highly personalized, integrative and comprehensive approach to skincare and beauty. We strongly believe the best results are obtained by a synergistic blend of treatments and products; not one or the other. The Steps in a Typical Facial
Skin analysis and consultation
One’s facial experience typically begins with a consultation, where a trained esthetician will analyse your skin type and determine what your skin needs. This will set the overall tone and be the basis for how the facial treatment will go and which products will be used on your skin.
Cleansing
Once the consultation is over, cleansing is the next step. Before moving on to any procedures, it is important that all your makeup is removed if there is any to ensure that the face is a clean canvas for your esthetician to work on. After removing the makeup, your esthetician will begin cleansing the skin to break up any impurities left on your skin.
Steam
This is probably one of the most relaxing parts of a facial. Most facial salons use a machine that directs the vapour of the warm steam to your face. This allows the pores to open up and makes the skin absorbent for the following products that will be used. It also helps to soften any whiteheads or blackheads on your skin, making them easier to remove during the extraction process to follow.
Exfoliation
Exfoliating is a step loved by many as it leaves your skin leaving soft and smooth later on. The scrub is used to remove dead skin cells and excess oil, which will make your skin look brighter. People with oily or acne-prone skin will benefit from this step as it removes the buildup that clogs the pores that cause those nasty breakouts.
Extractions
This part is where it may get a little uncomfortable. A facial extraction is a process of clearing clogged or obstructed pores and removing blackheads and whiteheads manually. Typically, people with oily skin types need more extraction done on the face but that doesn’t necessarily mean that those with other skin types will no longer have to undergo inspection.
Facial massage
This step is your facial massage, one of the other relaxing parts of a facial treatment alongside the steam. After all the products have been put on your skin, your esthetician will then manipulate the products and massage your face in various motions in order for the products to enter your skin and do its magic. Facial massages help to relieve tension in the head area and increase blood and oxygen flow as well.
Facial mask
This is what locks in all the product in your face — a facial mask. Based on your consultation and skin analysis, your esthetician will then apply a facial mask according to your skin type and condition. At this point of the facial, your esthetician may leave the room to let the facial mask do the work and give you a couple of minutes to relax too.
Final touches
The final touches of every facial include applying toner, serums, eye cream, moisturiser and even sunscreen. After all of that is sealed in, estheticians would normally recommend products to you that will help you maintain your skin right at home.
Benefits of Regular Facials
Rejuvenates and detoxifies the skin
With the different products and technology used in a facial, it helps to rejuvenate your skin and detoxify it from impurities. Our skin is exposed to dirt and impurities on a daily basis, and this is why facials are important to allow our skin to be cleansed.
Slows down the ageing process
Regular facials and face massages are known to boost collagen production and cell regeneration, which gives you the look of brighter and younger-looking skin. Let’s face it, we’re not getting any younger. So, who wouldn’t want a facial treatment that will reverse the ageing effects?
Reduces stress and tension
Due to its relaxing nature, facials have been known to relieve stress and tension. According to a study, facials allow your sympathetic nervous system to activate, which will ultimately reduce anxiety levels and uplifts your mood. While this isn’t a long-term effect, it’s nice to have some time for yourself to unwind and relax.
