What Are Escape Rooms?
Just like its name, escape rooms are known as an escape game, which involves a team of players (ranging from 1 to 10) cooperating to discover clues, solve mysteries, and accomplish tasks in one or more rooms. This is done throughout specific progresses to meet a specific goal in a limited amount of time (usually within 1 to 2 hours). The goal is often to escape from the site of the escape game or real-life adventure game.
Together with your team members or friends, everyone will assemble in a themed room, complete the mission and “escape” the room within the time allocation. The escape room game will usually require you to find hidden clues and solve challenging puzzles.
Themes of Escape Rooms
Before visiting an escape room, we need to understand the different types of themes. These are some common themes for escape rooms in Singapore:
Basic Escape Room
The basic escape room version has no theme at all. It only involve a simple puzzle to solve without the inclusion and atmosphere of a themed room. Some individuals prefer this version as compared to highly themed and storied versions. However, generally speaking, the general public enjoy themed rooms due to its entertaining and thrilling atmosphere. We’d consider the purist puzzle solver to play the basic escape room for its simple challenges.
Escape from a Horrible Situation
This kind of theme involves a horrible situation that could be anything “life-threatening” and “thrilling”. In certain circumstances, the time allocation is shorter to induce “anxiety“ for players. As time is ticking, players get to experience the themed scenarios such as zombie apocalypse, axe murders, infamous historical villians, vampires, ghostly encounters or a horrible serial killer! Other “horrible situation” scenarios might involve caves, dungeons, halloween or supernatural themes. The room will definitely be designed accordingly and escape room operators may add “scare actors” in full costume to enhance the fear factor. These “scare actors“ may even appear behind a prop or on a monitor screen – depending on how creative the host is. Thus, you and your team will have to solve the room’s mysteries and escape within the limited amount of time.
Investigate a Crime
This investigation theme is best suited for individuals who like to play detective roles and solve a crime. Undoubtedly, it places you and your team as the investigators at a crime scene. As the investigators, you and your team have to discover the stories of the crime or murder in the specified amount of time, and solve its mysteries. Throughout the process, there may be false clues and witness statements that are incomplete or contradictory. All these messy clues will be solved by you and your team within the time allocation.
Letter Room
This theme allows you and your team members are required to find letters with numbers and put them in order to solve the room’s mystery.
Flight Disaster
This sort of theme requires you and your team to stop and prevent a plane disaster – such as explosion or from getting hijacked. The room may be decorated as an airport lounge where you have to pick up clues left by a engineer in charge of fixing the plane or a terrorist organization planning a hijack.
Defuse a Bomb
You and your team are trapped in a room, and to make matters worse, there’s a ‘bomb’! This theme is usually nerve wrecking as you have to figure out how to defuse the bomb by solving puzzles to get codes. Usually, if the codes are entered correctly, the bomb will be stopped. This type of theme requires you to keep your cool under pressure while using logical reasoning and teamwork. There is no actual bomb, but the room and props will make it seem real and create a good atmosphere.
Find a Missing Person
This theme is quite common in Singapore, where players have to search through the clues and find out what happened to a particular missing person. The missing person could be an important person, your ‘friend’ or a political figure – it could be anyone! The task revolves around solving the mystery within the time allocation.
Find a Cure and Resolve Issues
Players will usually find this theme revolving around the story of a virus spreading in the region, or is about to be released. The job is to find a cure from the clues left behind by the sadistic scientist who created the virus.
Rescue Mission
For rescue mission theme, you will be ‘rescuing’ someone from a bad situation. These scenarios can be anything – such as special agents or military rescues. They all consist of a common story where important clues can be found by searching through items left behind at the last known position.
For escape room games, the distinct part is that each mystery room is decorated according to the theme of the mystery. Inside the escape rooms, each item holds important clues which will lead to solutions for the mystery escape. These clues should be used carefully to get important information or in some cases, puzzles needed to solve the mystery.
Escape rooms are challenging. In fact, most groups don’t manage to make it out of the room on time. But it’s the fun and team building that matters the most after all. Therefore, we recommend the best 20 escape rooms in Singapore with best services, themes and price ranges.

Came with kids and it was fun for them too. The room was up 3 flights of stairs so be prepared to climb. Service was friendly and attentive but only 3 clues given. I’d recommend this to others and will be back! – Suan Yeo |
Review 3 | It’s been some time since we went back to Xcape. Was surprised to see their main office shifted to level 1! Really nice entrance and pretty lobby. Tried their newest room, Azkaban! True to it’s theme of Harry Potter. We were given robes to wear. Instantly becoming a wizard/witch. Review 2 | I recently went to Freeing sg as a student and it was great to know there was a discount for being a student. The rooms were fun, entertaining, and somewhat challenging. I would say this is one of the scarier escape rooms, so this escape room isn’t a good idea for younger children. I have to say that the rooms were a little small, but they were packed with many different things, so it was still a great experience. I recommend this escape room to anyone who wants to have fun with friends, or if you would like to do it just with your family. – fluxinator44 |

Review 1 | This was an awesome experience. Of course a portion of the time spent was on dealing with the technically aspects of the game. Making sure all the mics and the earphones and the visual aspects of the game were in sync. The staff did a very clear explanation of the game and its mechanics and were also extra patient with us cause we were too excited. Virtual reality was really a must try experience. Your mind will be blown away. We had to pause a couple of times due to some technical difficulties. After the game they had even put together a video for us. So that was very nice. All in all it is worth every dollar. There are 3 different scenes to try we did the deadwood mansion this time but will surely be back again! – Crystal Wong |
Review 2 | VR, I would say Sandbox VR is better.
There is less walking in Sandbox VR, and hence the chances of you colliding with your teammates are low. Also, because Sandbox VR uses motion capture to determine your position accurately, there are more interactive options available, such as reviving your teammates and solving puzzles. The haptic feedback vest and the fans in the room plays a part in making the VR game as real as possible. At the end of the game, I like that Sandbox VR gives you something to take home for remembrance. I wasn’t expecting that; it was a pleasant surprise. – Lester Chan |
Review 3 | After your first game i bet you’ll crave for another because that’s what we did too! Don’t worry though, there will be a 50% off if you immediately request for another game! Staffs are friendly and helpful, would come again given the chance. 👌 – Zul Fattah |

Review 1 | As a Singaporean, I’ve never been to Fort Canning before and this puzzle hunt was like a self guided tour that covered the entire area of the park. The puzzles were enjoyable even under the hot sun in Singapore’s sultry weather!
It was something different from all the other usual date activities we had and it was a refreshing change. This puzzle hunt is something suitable for couples or small groups of friends and it really brings back some nostalgic memories of the heritage tours we had during schooling times. The creators of this puzzle also generously provided bottled water for us knowing Singapore’s hot weather. Can’t wait or the next puzzle hunt to be out! – nptoh |

Review 1 | There are currently(18 July 2020) no on-site tickets sale. Tickets are to be purchase online. There is also an app to be downloaded so that there will be enhanced AR visuals in your video or photos. There are several sections in this petite museum. Each section have around 4 to 5 photo areas with recommended photographer positioning point. It fun and enjoyable thou the price is on the high side. As we are still in the Convid 19 situation, there are literally no other customers beside ourselves and best part is that you get to unmask yourselves to take photos. – Wendi Ng |
Review 2 | A rare, unusual yet quite indulging place at Sentosa. Don’t forget to download their application and TRICK yourselves. I must say there are some really creative illusions here.. You may spend about 1-2 hours here overall. – Kshitij Kamath |
Review 3 | I went there twice! Once with my parents and once with my friend. Quite an interesting place to be. You can easily spend about 2-3 hours here going from one room to the other taking pictures. Definitely worth a place where toi should go with a company. Recommended to wear comfy footwear as you need to walk here. Vibrant and colourful! Lifts up your mood with its witty ideas. This is such a unique and fun concept! We spent around an hour in here just taking pictures. Plus, the 3D app they have is really making everything feel super realistic. The ice museum is also really funny, we got to go down an ice slide. Really loved it! – Chantal Walker |

Review 1 | Came to play with several of my friends last week during which we played some of the games they had on offer.
Amongst the rooms we tried, most of the puzzles were well crafted and employed a variety of different puzzle solving techniques. This provided a rather substantial challenge and kept the experience fresh throughout. Each room was designed with its respective theme in mind. The selection of props used were well chosen and stuck to the theme which helped to maintain the sense of immersion in the rooms. There was no limitation on the hints as well, making it a great option for introducing beginners to escape rooms. Overall, we greatly enjoyed our time at roomraider and would recommend it to anyone, especially so for first-time players. – ET Neoh |
Review 2 | Tried Killer’s game today. Sadly we could not complete the game. Luckily the game masters provided us with the walk through of the game and allowed us to “complete” the game instead of leaving us wondering what we could have done wrong. Affordable Price for students. That includes Uni/Poly/JC students. – Kendrick Ho |
Review 3 | It was really an amazing experience here because the puzzles and being able to feel the 5D escape room simulations made us put our brains together and it served as a bonding time for us especially since we’re busy growing old and apart. I would definitely recommend the Neon Green and Prison Break rooms for those who are seeking for thrills in a group! Staff were also friendly and helped us along the way. Will definitely come here again to try out the other rooms! :)!- Dinie Kay |

Fear Factor of Escape Rooms
Dress Code for Escape Rooms
For beginners who haven’t visited any escape room before, the recommended dress code is as followed:
- Comfortable shoes. Wear a pair of comfy shoe with a sturdy sole so that you stay comfortable as you move through the dark room for 1 to 2 hours.
- Non-restricting pants or shorts. Wear a pair of pants or shorts that is comfortable for the activities.
- A breathable dry-fit t-shirt.
Cost of Visiting an Escape Rooms
Most escape rooms in Singapore cost around $25 to $30 per person for a one-hour game. The game generally allows 1 to 12 players at a time – depending on its theme and room size.
Tips for Escape Rooms
These are some important tips that we advise individuals to practice at the escape rooms:
- If it has a “do not touch” sticker on it, don’t touch it.
