English Tuition in Singapore
English is the lingua franca of Singapore’s business and education scene. More and more school children of different backgrounds are starting to converse in English, even among their own ethnic groups.
Children’s exposure to social media has also provided an opportunity for them to use written English. They’re basically living and breathing the language.
Yet, that doesn’t necessarily mean that your child will ace English quickly and effortlessly! Sometimes, a little booster in the form of English tuition classes might help push your kid’s grades to a whole new level!
What Happens In An English Tuition Class?
English tuition is one of the most popular tuition subjects among students. Depending on the level of the students, the tuition curriculum might cover different topics.
Primary Level
Primary-level English tuition focuses on helping students grasp the fountain of the language. An English tuition teacher would usually help your child focus on areas that are part of the examination syllabus for primary-level English, such as:
- Grammar Multiple Choice Questions
- Vocabulary Multiple Chose Questions
- Grammar Cloze
- Vocabulary-Cloze Multiple Choice
- Synthesis
- Comprehension Cloze
- Comprehension
- Composition
Building Blocks in Primary English – Grammar and Vocabulary
Most tuition teachers would help weaker students master their foundation of grammar and vocabulary. Both grammar and vocabulary acts as a prerequisite to construct and restructure sentences, as well as understanding passages. When they have mastered these rudimentary skills, they can perform better in their MCQs, synthesis and comprehension.
-
Comprehension
Tuition teachers will guide students along in understanding the passage, as well as the variety of questions asked. These types of questions include:
-
- Factual
- Inferencing
- Sequencing
- Vocabulary in Context
Understanding the question can help to identify the most suitable answer within the passage.
-
Composition
Primary-level composition focuses on developing students’ ability to tell a story in the form of continuous writing.
Tuition teachers will guide students to deliver an engaging narrative through various storytelling and writing devices, such as Foreshadowing and Rising Action.
-
Oral Examination and Listening Comprehension
Although not as common, English tuition classes are starting to include oral and listening comprehension strategies as part of their lessons these days.
Secondary Level
Secondary-level English – A step up to understanding and utilising the language with confidence
Secondary-level English is more demanding. Students are required to read, understand and reason out their thoughts in their own words.
There are 3 major comprehension sections in the secondary syllabus.
-
Visual Comprehension
The first section comprises visual comprehension, where students are required to study a poster, usually an advertisement, and answer the given questions. Unlike the primary syllabus, the secondary visual comprehension question requires some analytical skills, for example:
Look at the photograph of the children swimming in the pool. What are some ideas this picture is trying to establish with the audience?
Teachers will guide students to exercise his/her ability to think critically and rationalise from time to time. This is to help him/her articulate his/her opinion in proper English.
-
Fictional and Non-Fictional Comprehension
The next 2 comprehension sections offer a fictional, as well as a non-fictional passage. The fictional passage is usually adapted from a novel. In contrast, the non-fiction version is generally adapted from a news or magazine article. The questions that follow these passages cannot be answered by merely copying and pasting. For example:
How does she know that the Yeti is taller than her just by looking at its footprints?
The answer isn’t necessarily English-related. It requires some general knowledge. In fact, you probably wouldn’t need to read the entire passage to answer the question. For those of you who are still wondering, the answer is:
The distance between each of the Yeti’s footsteps is greater than her own.
Other questions may have answers reflected in the text, but students have to rephrase them to avoid getting penalised. For example:
Text: Upon witnessing the jeers and laughter from everyone in the hall, Sarah left her precious guitar on stage, rushed towards the nearest toilet cubicle and wailed.
Question: Explained how the reaction from the audience has triggered a strong response from Sarah.
Answer: Sarah was overwhelmed by the humiliation that she escaped into a quiet place to cry without realising that she left a valuable personal item on stage.
For the above comprehension passages, teachers will guide students to exercise their ability to understand:
-
- The flow and progression of the passage
- The questions and their requirements
- Fact-find clues in the passage and summarise in their own words
-
Language Editing
Language editing is a newly introduced segment in Paper 1 of the O-Levels examination syllabus. This is to test students’ ability to spot grammatical errors.
Tuition teachers will likely revise through this segment to sharpen their grammatical sword.
-
Situational Writing
Students are provided with either a web or news article. They have to write a letter in response to the article’s call to action. This letter could be a cover letter for a potential job interview or a proposal to the town council.
Tuition teachers will guide students to identify the purpose of the letter and write with the audience in mind. They will learn how to use the right words to convey the appropriate tone to achieve the letter’s objectives.
-
Continuous Writing
Continuous writing in secondary school is very different from those in primary school. The secondary-level continuous writing doesn’t have pictures to guide students along. Its questions can be expository, often covering societal or existential issues faced by young people. For example:
-
- How can a victim of bullying stand up against their oppressors without resorting to violence?
- What are some life lessons teenagers can learn from the older generation?
However, students are also given a choice to write a narrative piece, harnessing their storytelling abilities and imagination. For example:
-
- Write about a time when you made a choice that you regret later.
- The day when everything went wrong.
The tuition teacher would help hone your child’s ability to engage the reader with:
-
- Clear and concise sentences
- Well-structured paragraphs
- Developing strong argument points
- Choosing dynamic words and phrases to bring the “life” out of the story
- Creating an impactful conclusion
Why Should Your Child Get English Tuition?
-
Primary-level English is the building block for a rigorous secondary school curriculum
If you’re reading up to this point, you would know that the secondary school English syllabus is very demanding. Hence, if your primary-level child is struggling with grammar and vocabulary, it’s time to start building up his/her confidence in the subject.
Otherwise, he/she will have a difficult time in secondary school and may face the possibility of repeating another year. This brings me to my next point.
-
It’s a promotion criterion in secondary schools
In most secondary schools, the promotion criterion for Lower Secondary Express students is to pass English and score a passing average from the other subjects. Normal Academic students from Secondary 1 to Secondary 3 will have to pass English and 2 other subjects.
Should they fail English, they need to pass at least 4 subjects to be promoted. Normal Technical students from Secondary 1 to 3 will need to pass at least 2 subjects to be promoted, with at least one subject being either English or Mathematics.
Secondary 3 Express students will need to pass English and 2 other subjects to be promoted. If not, they will have to pass at least 5 other subjects.
Hence, you probably understand why passing English is so vital. Its importance doesn’t just stop there. Your child’s English grade will be factored in their aggregate calculation during their N- and O-Levels.
For parents whose children aspire to enter Junior College, passing English is non-negotiable. For parents with kids sitting for the N-Levels, do remember that there are some courses in the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) that only accepts passes in English. Click here for a list of NITEC courses and their minimum requirements.
However, if your child aims to enter into the Polytechnic, passing English isn’t enough, especially if there’s a specific course he/she seeks to join.
-
Various Polytechnic courses require an excellent English grade
If your kid is taking the N-levels and is aiming for the Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP), please note that your child needs to score at least a Grade 3 to enter, and Grade 2 for selected courses.
If your child is taking the O-levels, please note some courses requires at least a B4 in English. For example Law & Management in Temasek Polytechnic and Mass Communication in Ngee Ann Polytechnic.
-
Your child will be equipped with lifelong skills that eventually pays off
The English curriculum in Singapore not just trains them to be more proficient in the language, it’s also a character-building process.
For example, comprehension passages are a training ground for them to practice their skills in reading and understanding. There are so many contracts and plans in the working world, where a focused pair of eyes are needed. One cannot just simply sign something without reading to understand.
We are also living in a period where fake news is in abundance. With reading and fact-finding abilities, your child can be discerning in determining whether that piece of news is true or false. He/she will become a more informed citizen.
Your child can also learn essential elements of marketing through visual comprehension passages, as well as situational writing. He/she will learn why certain ads have specific words with subliminal meanings. When writing a letter, he/she will have to put himself/herself in the shoes of the other party, building up skills in empathy and possibly sales. These skills come in handy when he/she starts to write a cover letter for a job or scholarship interview.
Most importantly, the English curriculum will teach them patience and focus. Long comprehension passages require a laser-like astuteness, as well as the clarity of mind to think and process information.
Cost of English Tuition in Singapore
English tutors vary in price. On average, a primary English tuition lesson will fetch around $20 to $30 per hour. In contrast, a secondary English tuition class will set you back by $40 per hour.
However, if the teacher is MOE-trained, you’ll be expected to fork out at least $40 to $70 per hour for primary English tuition and $60 to $80 per hour for secondary English tuition.
For private tutors, be prepared to add $15 to $20 more per hour for primary and $20 to $30 more per hour for secondary.
I hope you understand that English tuition is a vital investment for your child, especially if he/she is struggling with the language.

I am thankful for illum.e’s lessons. Without my teacher’s guidance, I might not be able to pass my English. At illum.e, every lesson is conducted systematically with a clear objective. As a student, I can really understand what is taught and apply the skills well! As a result, I enjoy my writing process instead of always dreading it! Teng Shi, Jurongville Secondary School |

“Before I joined Learning Journey, English was my worst subject in school. In fact, paper 2 was my worst component. I had no idea how to answer paper 2 questions at all. After joining Learning Journey, teachers at LJEC taught me the correct way to answer different types of paper 2 questions. My grades for paper 2 improved tremendously. Apart from paper 2, teachers at LJEC have also taught me how to write essays that can impress my markers. They have also helped me to improve my oral by scheduling oral sessions with me. I really enjoy myself during each lesson. They are caring teachers who truly care for the students.” |
