Ear candling is a non-invasive process that claims to extract earwax, along with other toxins, from the ear canal. Some also claim that it can help to alleviate certain health problems and promote relaxation throughout the body.

How did ear candling come about?
While ear candling is said to be a traditional practice, its origin and history are unclear. Numerous sources have mentioned places and cultures as diverse as China, Egypt, Tibet and even the mythical city of Atlantis, as the origin of ear candling.
Some less common names of ear candling include ear coning, thermal-auricular therapy, candle therapy or coning therapy.
Despite not knowing who is responsible for starting this practice or where it began, people across various cultures have been practising ear candling for decades.
Today, ear candling is widely offered as a service in many traditional chinese medical clinics. Some clinics bundle it together with a head massage while others offer it as a standalone service.
Who is it for?
Anyone can go sign up for an ear candling session. However, to err on the side of caution, children are not recommended to go for ear candling sessions as they tend to be more fidgety and this may be dangerous particularly when the practitioner is holding a lighted candle near their ears.
What is the purpose of ear candling?
Many practitioners have claimed that ear candling brings about a slew of benefits, aside from simply removing ear wax.
Some of the proposed benefits of ear candling includes:
- Treating sinus infections
- Improved hearing or reversing loss of hearing
- Relieving sore throats, headaches, and migraines
- Treat colds and flus
- Improves mental clarity
- Purifies the blood and improves blood circulation
- Clears the eyes and improves one’s vision
- Reduces tension, stress and vertigo
Ear candling treatment is considered to be holistic as the benefits that it provides extend beyond merely rectifying ear problems.
For some, ear candling is also viewed as a relaxing treatment, and that it is capable of bringing relaxation both to the body and mind.
Some practitioners use candles that are mixed with essential oils that promise to help balance your emotional state and energise your current state of mind.
All in all, the benefits of ear candling treatments will largely depend on the type of herb that the practitioner uses.
What are these ear candles made of?
In spite of its name, the candles used in ear candles are not the typical birthday type of candles that we imagine it to be. These ear candles are typically made of fabric soaked in wax or a mixture of paraffin and beeswax. The candles are usually around 25cm long and are hollow in the centre, similar to that of a straw.
What to expect from an ear candling session?
During your ear candling session, you will be asked to lie on your side. You will most likely be provided with a pillow to support your head as well as to ensure that your ear canal is vertical.
One end of the candle will then be inserted into your ear canal, and at the other end, the practitioner will light a fire on the candle. There will not be any wax entering your ears.
As the candle burns, a vacuum is created inside your ear canal. This vacuum creates a gentle suction motion which will draw out your ear wax and impurities.
The entire process will last for around 10 – 20 minutes for each candle.
At times, a gentle popping may be heard. This is due to the hot air rising and pushes through the auditory canal, which helps to regulate the pressure in your ears.
How long does each ear candling session last?
On average, each candle takes around 15 minutes to completely burn. For children and teenagers, they typically require around half a candle to one candle per ear. This means that their session will last approximately half an hour to at most 45 minutes.
Adults, on the other hand, generally require no more than two candles per ear. Given that a maximum total of around four candles are required, an average session may last around an hour and a half.
How often can I go for ear candling?
The ear candling process is meant to remove unwanted “debris” from your ears. If it is your first time going for an ear candling session, it is recommended to go for two to three sessions over a period of one month.
Subsequently, you may go for an ear candling session as and when required. Do note however, that our ears typically replenish its normal protective ear wax within a span of 24 hours.
Are ear candling treatments expensive?
Unlike spa or facial treatments, ear candling treatments are extremely affordable! Most clinics will charge between $25 – $45 for one session.
Some clinics also include ear candling treatments as part of a spa or facial package treatment, giving you a bang for your buck!
Can I perform ear candling treatment at home?
As simple as the process sounds, ear candling treatments should never be done by yourself at home. There are many risks associated with performing the treatment without professional supervision. For instance, you may accidentally burn yourself or scald yourself if hot wax drips onto your face.
When you go to an established clinic for an ear candling session, it will typically be performed by a professional practitioner. The entire session will be properly regulated such that you can reap the maximum perks of the ear candling treatment, while enjoying the relaxation benefits!
