Overview of Driving Schools

Driving schools offer professional programmes to rain individuals to be certified drivers. In order to be certified drivers, they need a driving license. Learning how to drive is one of the most exciting and awesome life skills. Before purchasing your first car, you will be looking forward to learning how to drive.

Singapore has one of the most strictest and professional driving school programmes. Unlike other countries where learning how to drive is a simple process that requires only a few months to complete, one has to wait for a longer period of time before they can finish all driving lessons and pass the driving tests. Nevertheless, the waiting process is certainly worth it because driving is a sophisticated skill where you have to be competent enough before driving on the crowded roads. Moreover, driving is convenient and accessible for individuals who work and live in isolated areas.

As a result, locals can head to the nearest driving school in neighbourhood areas such as Woodlands and Ubi Driving Centres. For individuals who are unaware, there are 3 known driving schools in Singapore that offer professional training for a range of driving licenses. This includes Class 3 and 3A licenses (for manual and automatic cars respectively) as well as motorcycles, heavy vehicles (usually for construction or military), lorries and buses.

The location is usually the biggest determinant for picking a driving school followed by other factors such as opening hours, price range and passing rates for driving license.

Processes in Driving Schools

There will be three main tests in local driving schools. Firstly, you have to go through the Basic Theory Test. This is the most general test with simple questions relating to the traffic etc. Once you pass this test, you can apply and sit through your Provisional Driving License (PDL), which will be valid for 6 months and allows you to drive under professional guidance and supervision by a trained personnel. Moving on, you can proceed to take the Final Theory Test. Then, you will be assigned to your series of practical sessions where you hit the circuit and the road. Eventually, when you’re ready, book a slot for your Practical Test. Once you pass all these tests, you can receive your driver’s license and hit the road as soon as possible.

Costs of Driving Schools

The costs of driving schools differ for individuals attending private or public driving schools. For public driving schools, you can expect to pay between $50 and $180 for each driving lesson. Most schools tend to offer packages of 10 lessons, costing $300-$1800 in total. The road tests are additional fees of at least $50 to $150 per test. This means if you failed any driving tests and have to retake them, you’d need to pay additional costs.

Duration of Driving Schools’ Programmes

Most driving schools offer at least 25 practical lessons, which equates to a duration of 3 to 6 months depending on your arranged schedule. This is on top of theory classes and inductions. Students who can pack the classes into shorter period of time will get to receive the driving license quicker than the rest. Students have to keep a close look on the slots so that they can book the best available slots. In short, learning how to drive and getting the license can take up to an intensive one year period.

Review 1 Signed up with one team and managed to pass the test the second time. My instructor luo hongle(Id 1135) was able to spot out my mistakes and helped in correcting them over the course of the lessons. Very grateful to him. Ty Cher 😀 – daryltyh
Review 2 My two daughters passed their driving tests, one on her first attempt, the other on her second. That speaks well enough about the centre, in providing and producing what matters most.
They related that the instructors were mostly very good, though there was a few bad apples. So generally they had a pleasant journey in getting their class 3 licences, both for less than two months upon enrollment.
I was there too for many times, and found the counter services were generally very good. Personnel served with smiles, provided relevant instructions and were generally very helpful.
The centre is rather old, though.. However we can see they are renovating the place phase by phase now. – Sham Abdullah

Review 1 My experience here was fantastic, went to register for my Class 3A license and it was so easy. I was there at 4pm on a Wednesday and I was out of there in about 15-20 mins( honestly would have been faster if my anxious self wasn’t asking so many questions). This super nice uncle (I wished I got his name) helped me through my registration and even helped me to book the BTT, induction, pre-trial and internal evaluation, which honestly besides the BTT I did not know existed at all. If you are like me, easily confused by all the steps of registering and also easily stressed hehe, I highly reccomend you try this place out and just skip ubi or online registration. This place will clear up all your doubts! – Jenne Tok

Tips for Attending Driving Schools

1. Be financially prepared

Be prepared to pay a lump sum of money for getting the driving license; at least $2000 set aside. Moreover, driving tests’ fees are increasing almost every year.

2. Train your patience

It is always important to be patient no matter how desperate you want to own a driving license. Patience is a virtue and that can’t be truer when it come to intensive driving lessons.

3. Driving instructors are not fixed

If you want to learn in school, take note that your driving instructor will not be the same every time. However, you can choose to opt for a fixed instructor by paying more for a scheme that does so. Looking on the bright side, rotating instructors may be better as you will be able to experience more than one driving style as you never know who your final tester is.

4. Be on a quick lookout when booking lessons

A well-known fact is that too many locals are interested to learn how to drive and everyone is busy so slots during weekends and after work hours are always occupied – whether private or school. This results in a huge difference between prices during peak and non-peak hours.

5. Trust your instructor

As beginners drivers, most are inevitably more nervous than amateur drivers. Thus, you should trust your instructor, who has a rich experience and wholeheartedly wants you to become a safe and responsible driver.

Differences between driving schools and private schools

Driving schools’ students tend to have rotating instructors throughout their school term. This might affect individuals who prefer to have a fixed teacher. Nonetheless, this boils down to the individual’s preferences. Some absorb lessons better if they get to hear various opinions. If you prefer continuity and sticking to a fixed instructor throughout the course, you can pay a small fee for the fixed-instructor scheme.

Private schools’ students have a fixed private instructor throughout the course. However, it is always important to conduct your research and ask for your friend’s recommendations to find someone who fits your learning pace. Getting the right instructor will help you to be on the fast-track to getting your driver’s license.

All in all, in order to ensure that you have the best personalised driving lessons, we’ve found the best driving schools in Singapore for you. These listings include the top best recommended driving schools with immaculate services and driving lessons for interested individuals.
