Dieticians vs nutritionists
The people they work with
Dieticians are professionals who treat medical conditions through medical nutrition therapy. The people they work with are primarily patients who are diagnosed with chronic diseases.
Nutritionists are primarily focused on advocating for healthy eating habits and a balanced lifestyle. They do not work with people who have health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure. The people they work with are primarily healthy individuals who want to improve their nutrition intake and lifestyle.
Workplace
Dieticians usually work in medical settings such as clinics and hospitals. Their job scope includes conducting nutritional assessments on patients and prescribing dietary changes to treat and better manage their diseases.
Nutritionists, on the other hand, are found in commercial settings such as fitness and wellness centres. They provide consultations and formulate meal plans for clients. They can also work with restaurants to develop healthy food menus.
Education
Dieticians and nutritionists may have a similar curriculum at the beginning of the course, but their focus would be different towards the end. Students who study dietetics are more focused on medical-related subjects such as clinical biochemistry, medical nutrition therapy and therapeutic diet preparation.
Nutrition students will focus more on nutrition modules such as learning nutrition programme planning and assessment, nutrition education and nutrition for sports activity.
Types of dietitians
Clinical dietitians
Clinical dieticians work in an inpatient hospital setting. There are also outpatient dieticians situated in hospitals or clinics, but they deal with people who are generally less sick. Both inpatient and outpatient dieticians can provide nutrition advice to people with specialised needs, such as people who are diagnosed with diabetes or kidney diseases, surgery patients, and cancer treatment patients.
Food service management
Dieticians who work in food service management oversee the production of nutritious foods and ensure that they meet the food safety guidelines.
These dieticians usually are situated in large organisations such as schools or business organisations.
Community
Community dieticians design and implement health and nutrition programmes that are targeted at the community instead of individuals. Such efforts can be used to advocate the prevention of specific health problems such as diabetes. These dieticians can also advocate public policies with a focus on nutrition and health problems.
Research
Research dieticians are usually situated in research institutes, universities, or research hospitals. Research dieticians are focused on carrying out nutrition interventions and typically are part of a research team.
Nutrition Myths
Consuming most of my calories during dinner will cause rapid weight gain
It has been proven that our body does not process food differently at different times of the day. It does not matter if we consume most of our calories during the day or night because, ultimately, calories are still calories. Weight gain happens when you consume more calories than you burn off.
Fat-free means I can consume however much I want
Contrary to popular belief, foods that are low in fat or fat-free does not mean calorie-free. Foods low in fat or fat-free are lower in calories than the same size portion of the full-fat product. However, many processed food that is low-fat or fat-free could contain as many calories or even more calories than the full-fat version. This is because the process of removing fat involves adding sugar, flour, and other carbohydrates to keep the original taste.
Carbohydrates cause weight gain
Carbohydrates like protein and fat do not cause weight gain. If you indulge in rich in sugar and refined carbohydrate food such as white bread, pasta, and doughnuts can put you at a higher risk of developing health problems.
Mainly eating salads and greens will help weight loss
While it is true that salads and green vegetables have almost zero fat content and are low in energy density, be careful with the salad dressing and sauces, which are high in fat. Salad-based diets are also highly encouraged as it provides essential vitamins, fibre, and minerals crucial for good health.
Eggs are bad for the heart
Most healthy people can consume an egg a day without significant problems are our body compensates the cholesterol intake by manufacturing less cholesterol. Our daily cholesterol intake should be kept at less than 300 mg, and a typical large egg yolk contains about 134 mg.
Microwaving food is harmful
The methods we use to cook our food affect the food’s nutritional level. The heat and the amount of time we cook affect the food. There are certain heat and water-sensitive nutrients such as vitamin C and vitamin B, which are lost in the process of cooking a fish. However, because cooking in a microwave cooks food more quickly, it helps to minimise nutrient loss. Microwaves are very low-intensity forms of radiation that do not pose substantial health concerns.
Brown sugar is healthier than white sugar
There is no nutritional difference between white and brown sugar. Brown sugar is white granulated sugar with added molasses. While brown sugar does contain small amounts of minerals, the mineral content between brown and white sugar are insignificant unless you consume a massive portion of brown sugar every day.
Benefits of working with a dietician
Personalised nutrition plans
Working with a dietician means that you are getting personalised nutrition. As each individual is different, there is no one-size-fits-all nutrition plan for everyone. Personalised nutrition plans are designed based on the individuals’ situation and health status. These plans include specialised goals which target the individual’s specific health needs.
Motivation and support
Dieticians also provide motivation and support to their clients besides giving nutritional information and advice. Having sufficient encouragement and support from your dieticians can help you feel less lonely during your diet journey.
Conclusion
As dieticians only work with patients with health problems, a nutritionist may be a better option for ordinary people. Both dieticians and nutritionists can help design a personalised nutrition plan which allows individuals with specific health needs to reach their goals.
