Dance. A form of expression. A powerful art form can mean a multitude of different things to different people. There are many ways to describe dance but at its core, it is all about movement and grace.

Popular Genres of Dance

Hip-hop

When hip-hop music was first introduced in the 1970s, hip-hop as a dance genre also evolved with it. Hip-hop dance first originated in the Bronx in New York City by DJ Kool Herc, also known as the ‘founding father of hip-hop’. Through the power of media, television, and movies, hip-hop slowly made its way to other parts of the world such as Europe and Asia.

Ballet

Known as one of the oldest and most technical dance genres of all time, ballet continues to be one of the most famous types of dance genres across the globe. Ballet is often characterized as light and graceful movements that exude poise and elegance with every point and turn.

Contemporary

Contemporary dance is a more abstract and deconstructed genre that incorporates improvisation and versatility. Unlike ballet, contemporary dancers have more freedom to experiment with different movements since the genre in itself combines elements from different styles such as lyrical, jazz, and even classical ballet.

Jazz

We have the African-American community to thank for creating the beauty that is jazz dance. Popularised in the early 20th-century, jazz dance focuses a lot on improvisation and rhythm. Some of the most popular jazz dances and styles include the charleston, the lindy hop and jitterbug, and even the swing and boogie.

Tap

get google ranking ad

Tap dance got its name from the rhythmical tapping sound that you make with your tap shoes. Tap dancers usually require proper tap shoes with metal taps attached to the toe and heel and a tap dance mat. While tap routines are generally choreographed, seasoned dancers are able to freestyle and create their own movements with their tap shoes.

Ballroom

Ballroom dance is a dance genre umbrella that encompasses many other forms of dance. It’s usually performed with a partner, that can be done both competitively and socially. Dancers use a set of step patterns, move rhythmically, and express the personality of the music that they’re dancing to. Other types of ballroom dance styles are the waltz, rumba, cha-cha, tango, swing, and salsa.

Ms. Shanti, Ms. Andrea, and Ms. Natalie have been brilliant and what is great about the school is that the teachers have been here for a long time and qualified. They make it fun for the young ones and teach techniques for the older ones. Great location as well for the parents as they wait for class to finish.” – Monica Tsai

“The school has an exceptional standard of teaching and commitment towards the children, shown by all the staff we have worked with. Furthermore, they have been amazing mentors and role models in guiding the children through life-lessons such as collaboration, determination, kindness to others, and self-confidence. Her time as Dance Arts has had a profound positive impact on shaping the young lady she is turning into.

Review 1“We highly recommend dance lessons with Skye! He was patient, encouraging, non-judgmental, and kept our classes really fun. We both loved working with Skye and couldn’t have possibly picked a better instructor. I thought my husband and I would never be able to dance elegantly, but he proved me wrong! Over the course of a few weeks, we both turned from shy insecure dancers to looking confident and composed on our big day!” – Jennifer and Dominic
Review 2”Awesome dance studio. Spacious, brightly lit, and nicely decorated with a dozen potted plants.

The studio is very accessible too, only a 5min walk from Outram MRT.

Skye listened to what I want out of my dance lessons and tailored the lessons accordingly. Very personable with clear instruction. Not disappointed at all! Will recommend to anyone looking to put on their dance shoes for the first time!” -Bernard Koh

What Is the Cost of Dance Classes?

Why Do People Dance?

People dance for various different reasons. Sometimes that just happens to be their profession and for others, it’s more of a pastime.

get google ranking ad

Professional

Some people pursue a career in dance to become a professional or commercial dancer.

This involves years and years of training and perfecting their craft. There are some dancers that choose to pursue a dance degree that is geared towards a specific genre, while others consistently attend dance classes to hone their moves from skilled teachers who also have industry experience.

Leisure/Recreational

Dance can also be enjoyed as a leisure activity. For those who don’t want the same commitment level or intensity as professional dancers, it can still be enjoyed as a social activity that you can enjoy with your partner, a group of friends, and even on your own.

Benefits of Dancing

There are a ton of physical health benefits that you can get from dancing since it is all about movement. But did you know that this can improve your mental and emotional health as well?

Physical

Improves cardiovascular health

Regardless of the intensity of the class or the genre of dance, dancing can boost your cardiovascular health immensely. It is a great way to increase your stamina and get your heart pumping and is similar to other cardio exercises such as jogging, swimming, and aerobics.

Increases your balance

The footwork and movement in dance require a great deal of balance. In order to carry out each step as directed by the instructor, it is important to keep a strong center of gravity in order to support your weight as you groove to the beat of the music. The more you practice, the more your balance will improve.

digital marketing for different business niches

Mental

Improved brain function and boosts memory

It is a known fact that dancing improves one’s overall brain function and helps to boost your memory as well. Each time you dance, it improves your spatial memory, also known as one of the cognitive domains that are responsible for recording and processing information about one’s environment. With that, dancing also reduces the risk of dementia as well.

Exercises your mind

As you get older, it is essential to continue to keep your brain active through different activities. Challenging your brain through dance requires you to focus on different factors at the same time as the music, the sequence of the steps, change in movement, and timing as well.

Emotional

Reduce stress and helps with depression

Just like any other physical activity, dancing releases hormones called endorphins, which are also commonly known as happy hormones. These neurotransmitters that are released in our bodies have the ability to reduce stress significantly, causing us to feel a sense of calmness and joy.

Boosts your confidence

As you dance more often and improve on your movements, your confidence and self-esteem develop with you. From learning new choreography to performing in front of your friends, the sense of achievement that comes with dancing will only increase your motivation to do better and spur you on to greater heights.

get google ranking ad

Social

Create new friends

When you walk into a dance class or lesson, you are bound to meet new people along the way and make new friends in the dance community.

It is an inclusive activity

Regardless of whether you’ve had prior dance experience or are a complete beginner, anyone and everyone can participate in a class. Dance does not discriminate and has no requirements of who can or cannot join in, making it an inclusive and safe space to move and freely express yourself.

Can I Dance Even If I Have No Experience?

Of course! With practice, anyone can learn the ropes of how to dance. What makes a great dancer isn’t just about the skills and techniques they possess, but the willingness and passion to learn and excel, most importantly.
