Accessories and jewellery pieces say a lot about an individual and his or her style – your choice of jewellery may be an intimate piece with an interesting story attached to it or simply just an accessory thrown on to jazz up an otherwise plain outfit. As society starts to place increasing emphasis on self-expression and individuality, bespoke jewellery are being thrown into the limelight, as more and more people are now seeking to own personalised pieces as a means to accentuate their individual styles.
After all, the right piece of jewellery is a deeply personal item and with the wide selection of customizable jewellery these days, there is no reason to get what everyone else already owns!
It may sound like an exaggeration to some but I personally find that picking the right arm accessory directly relates to feeling good. A little personal story here – I recently got myself a piece of moonstone beaded bracelet, and whenever I look at the light bouncing off those beads, I feel my worries and whatever anger I had at that point instantly melting away. Maybe it’s just me being weird, but to those who can relate to this feeling – thank you.
Common Types of Bracelets
Beaded Bracelet
Beaded bracelets are typically made by beading together materials such as gemstones, crystals, plastics, wood and so on. Due to their extreme versatility, they are not only highly popular amongst women, but also men as well. They can be worn with a casual outfit or for formal occasions, and look great on its own or stacked alongside a wristwatch.
Charm Bracelet
Usually a simple metal chain adorned with pendants or little trinkets, charm bracelets have been typically presented as gifts to mark important life events, such as the arrival of a newborn. Such bracelets are perfect for passing down through generations, while keeping those mementoes along the way. As Pandora’s charms started making their rounds globally, charm bracelets have become highly sought-after as a daily accessory for women due to their versatility and simplicity.
Friendship Bracelet
Let’s rewind to some 10 years back when friendship bracelets were a trend amongst teenagers – spending hours in 77th Street (permanently closed now; much to many streetwear lovers’ despair) with our besties deciding on matching colourful braided bracelets, while those who are good at crafts would choose to personalise the bracelets for their friends. Either way, this simple little gift between friends was a cute way to symbolize friendships when we were young. #BFF
Bangle Bracelet
These bracelets are typically made of metal with varying widths and do not have an opening or clasp to them. As such, it tends to be more structured and generally fits loosely on the wrist or even the arm for some people. They can be worn individually or stacked to create a fun, unique look. These are particularly popular amongst the Chinese in the wedding scene, where gold bangles are considered part of the si dian jin (betrothal jewellery) given to the bride by the groom’s mother as a form of blessing and acceptance into the family. As fashion trend shifts, some brides today tend to switch up the traditional chunky designs for sleeker, modern variations of the conventional auspicious symbols.

Tips on caring for your bracelets
Let’s face it, the cost of customised bracelets can be quite hefty at times, and it is no surprise we want them to last as long as possible so as to make our purchase worthwhile. Even the best quality jewellery needs special care to keep it looking great, and with such high humidity levels in Singapore, it can be quite tough to keep the bracelets away from tarnish and grime. Here are some tips on how you can keep your custom bracelets in mint condition.
Give your bracelets proper storage space
Keeping them in a box when you’re not wearing them helps to keep the sunlight, moisture and other airborne substances that may cause tarnishing at bay. Even if you do not own a jewellery box, Ziploc bags can also double up as jewellery bags!
Learn a little about your pieces before cleaning them
It is good to know about the materials your bracelets are made of before trying to clean them. For instance, certain types of bracelets such as those made of platinum or with diamonds, should never be submerged in water, while mild polishes can be used to restore the shine in sterling silver bracelets. Some bracelets come with a stamp which may give you an idea on the metal content. Research a little about the materials used and make a mental note on the dos and don’ts; that way you can preserve the shine on your bracelets for a long time.
Allow your bracelets to dry thoroughly
It may seem sufficient to pat your bracelets dry and then store it away immediately after. However, there may still be small amounts of moisture leftover from cleaning which can potentially ruin your bracelets. It is best to give ample time for the moisture to fully evaporate (preferably an hour) after cleaning before storing them in your jewellery box or bag.
Put on your bracelets last
It may be tempting to put on your bracelets before getting ready in the morning or preparing for a night out. However, it is best to slip them on last after you have finished getting completely ready as perfume and hand lotion may damage your pieces. Better yet, apply your hand lotion only after you’ve taken the bracelets off at night, as build-up of lotion products may lead to frequent cleaning of your bracelets, which may cause them to lose their shine more quickly.
Know when to remove your bracelets
You should always remove your bracelets when engaging in any activity that involves chemicals or abrasives. This not only applies to bracelets, but any types of jewellery in general. For instance:
- Swimming in a pool – chlorine is a hard chemical that will tarnish your bracelet and cause it to fade
- Cleaning your home – similar to above, most household cleansing products contain chlorine which will damage your jewellery
- Playing sports (particularly contact sports) – there is a risk of getting your bracelets broken or damaged, or the potential risk of injuring yourself or other players
