The Covid-19 pandemic which ensues a 2-month long circuit breaker has impacted the lives of many Singaporeans.
Job losses, the anxiety of an unpredictable economy and the inability to go out and have fun have caused an impact on Singaporean’s mental well-being.
Fortunately, we live in an age where talking about mental health is starting to be more acceptable. With open dialogues with ministers, as well as mental health film festivals, there are an abundance resources we can get help whenever we:
- Are anxious about the future.
- Have unresolved traumas.
- Have an intention to harm ourselves.
- Are experiencing mood swings.
- Are experiencing hallucinations.
- Are experiencing depression.
- Other mental or emotional discomforts.
Why should we get mental health help?
Gone are the days where the stigma surrounding people who visit counsellors and social workers. It is a great progress for our society.
With everyone embracing this issue with open arms, our nation can become more compassionate and empathetic. The quality of life can also improve. We measure ourselves not just by our status in society. We measure ourselves based on how happy and satisfied we are.
Hence, it is perfectly normal to seek mental health help. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!
Your life situation will get worse if you don’t address your issues
I’m not trying to sensationalise this. However, it is true.
Ever wonder why certain women will end up with men who keep abusing them, or why certain men will only attract women who only want to take advantage of them?
The hard truth is, they allowed it. There was probably some events in their past, usually found in their childhood that they have experienced. Those events have led them to repeat the experience over and over again. Sure, it is easy to say “stop it”. But the experience is so familiar that they may, unfortunately, mistake it as “love”.
Seeing a therapist may help you to uncover patterns that have been preventing you from finding the success and the relationships you truly deserve, which brings me to my next point.
You will feel empowered
Successful people do well because they analyse their past mistakes and often get help from people to help them. These people are usually consultants and coaches who provide a fresh set of unbiased eyes and tell them things they need to hear, not want to hear.
Similarly, seeing a counsellor or a therapist can help you confront the issues you don’t wish to see. However, you will emerge out of it feeling empowered. No longer will you find the need to outsource your problems (or blame) to others, you know deep down that you’re the master of your destiny.
Counsellor vs Psychologist
There are several options to get help. Here are 2 of the most popular choices. Their jobs may occasionally overlap. However, let’s dive a little deeper into each one of them.
Counsellor
Seeing a counsellor is more cost-effective than seeing a psychologist. A counsellor at the neighbourhood family service centre can also be free if you meet certain criteria.
Counsellors are excellent sources of support if you need someone to provide another vantage point to an ongoing issue. However, if your ongoing problems have deeper roots, i.e. a manifestation of your past traumas, it is advisable to see a psychologist instead.
Psychologist
A psychologist uses a series of therapy methods such as:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy – Changing unhealthy thinking patterns to improve your mental well-being and behaviour
- Psychoanalytic Therapy – Created by Sigmund Freud, this form of therapy aims to uncover patterns, events and unconscious thoughts that lead to your current state of mind through active listening.
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy – Therapists will move his/her finger around as you follow it while asking you to recall a traumatic life event. It is very suitable for anyone with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
The goal is to uncover what’s bugging you deep down eventually. If a habit takes 21 days to develop, think about what sort of unhealthy thought patterns and behaviours you have acquired over these years!
Psychologists are slightly pricier. Though, there are also options for people requiring financial aid at the Medical Social Work Department if you are seeing a therapist at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH).

Review 1 | “With zero knowledge & background in special education, a CAE staff (shout-out to Melissa) invited me for a preview talk and she gave a very clear introduction of the Diploma modules and explained well the career path and her teaching experience as well, which gave me a better understanding and confidence in pursuing a career in this new field. I took a 6-month Diploma in Education (Special Needs) in Oct last year and it has been an eye-opening and knowledge-enriching experience given the 2 lecturers who were practicing in the field, hence every lecture was never boring as the lecturers referenced heavily on the real-life situations and their teaching experiences and encounters have added extra value to the whole program. Overall, I would recommend the Diploma program to those who are considering entering into the Sped field or who want to just know more about it. Special thanks to Melissa who has ensured that I had a smooth and pleasant experience during my studying period in CAE, very helpful! Cheers!” – Kristiani Kim |
Review 2 | “Awesome lecturers, awesome school… the CAE staffs are helpful in giving advise throughout my time here. I have enjoyed the learning journey in Counselling programme” – Marcus Lai |
Review 3 | “I’ve completed counselling as well as special needs courses within 2 years. I must say the completion time is quite fast. Surprisingly this did not compromise the quality of teachings here. Top notch lecturers and service… thank you College of Allied Educators” – Adam Wong |

Review 1 | “Before coming to see Chris, I was feeling very low and uncertain about my life and my future. I have been struggling with anxiety depression for a very long time, and even though it’s been more stable, it was still not good enough. However, after seeing Chris, I learned a lot of ways of how I can connect to myself and manage my feelings and thoughts better. He helped me to resolve my negative feelings and misguided thoughts that I had from my past experiences so that I would be able to help myself in the future in similar experiences that may cause me to feel the same way. I’ve learned more about myself and what I want for the future which is important as I no longer have to be anxious about the future. It’s a learning process that I have to apply to my life, but I have more confidence now about myself and my future.” |
Review 2 | “I am glad that i chanced upon Stress.sg and met Chris who has truly helped me move on with my life after years of struggling with anxiety, work stress and insomnia as well. To be totally honest, i have seeked professional treatment elsewhere, did countless hours of self reading but could never find the results that i am looking for. All of these costs and failures were taking a toll on my mental and physical wellbeing and i was on the verge of giving up and carry on living my life with these weights anchored on me, thinking that my life is set to be that way. Unlike most of the psychiatrists or professionals i met before, Chris really connected with me on a personal level and cared about my problems. I could feel his commitment in helping me resolve these issues. Although the consultation charges are probably not as affordable as most would like it to be but the value and positive results you get at end are priceless for those who suffer from these conditions.” |
Review 3 | “Chris at Stress.SG is a very friendly and professional therapist who will patiently work with you to resolve your personal problems. Further to that, he will even teach you useful skills to manage future problems in your life, helping you to achieve success in your future endeavours. Each session is tailored to your individual needs and progress, and although the programme consists of only five sessions, I was amazed at what I have gotten out of every session. By the second session, I had already achieved an 80% improvement in my stress level, and there was also a marked improvement in my sleep. Through these sessions, I have managed to resolve my problems and discover my inner self. Being a student, I have also learned the techniques to manage my stress and achieve success in my future pursuits. The programme is worth the cost, and I highly recommend it.” |
