What Is a Cooking Class?
Cooking classes train participants in the craft, art of cooking. A cooking class imparts culinary skills to prepare, cook, present food/ meals in an aesthetic and pleasing manner.
Cooking classes impart operational, technical, and managerial skills to trainees which build up their expertise, knowledge, practice in culinary arts, hospitality.
The cooking journey starts with selecting premium ingredients. Chefs learn how to select and obtain ingredients that are optimal for consuming, whether it is some fruit, some herbs, a salmon slab, or others. In food and beverage outfits, it is usually the chef who undertakes the selection of suitable ingredients.
Later, the chef decides what recipes determine the final cooking. A seasoned chef is swift to adapt the menu to adjust proportions, shares of basic ingredients.
Following the setting of the menu, the sous chef must hunker down, prepare all the ingredients for the application of recipe recommendations. The ingredients must be hacked, chopped, carved, and cooked, arranged well so the final dish is aesthetic as well as delectable. There are many cutting, chopping, carving styles that a sous chef must learn to work naturally with, to use knives proficiently in professional cooking.
Cooks are trained to process, treat each ingredient appropriately, with care.
The cooks are trained in a range of cooking methodologies so they can adapt to any style of cooking on demand. Cooking methods cover styles like frying, deep frying, sautéing, broiling, boiling, basting, baking, steaming and more. Cooks are familiarized with essential cooking tools, like cookware and utensils. A wealth of kitchen tools is available, and the true culinary arts professional is acquainted with all, including grinder, mortar, pestle, ladle, steamer, blenders etc. Cooks learn to use cooking appliances such as gas cookers, ovens, freezers, grills, etc.
Sample Fees & Lesson Structure
Most culinary classes last 3 to 4 hours and can range from $13 per session at Community Centres all the way to $190 per session at established culinary schools with professional instruction and top-of-the-line equipment.
While some places offer single sessions, others only allow for full-course sign-ups, which means prospective students will have to commit to several lessons over the course duration.
Fortunately, many cooking studios also offer classes that fall under the government SkillsFuture scheme, under which Singaporeans aged 25 and above can use up to $500 worth of credits to pay for their courses. Eligible courses can be searched for via the SkillsFuture database.
Lessons are often grouped according to basic, intermediate, and advanced levels, but some lessons are deliberately targeted at teaching certain skill sets. Food presentation skills, cupcake frosting, jelly art and latte art, for example, are just some lessons offered by culinary studios besides general cooking and baking.

Benefits of a Cooking Class
- Professional instruction
Without a doubt one of the most important benefits of attending a cooking class is the professional guidance provided – almost all lessons, whether at a studio or home-based, are led by chefs, bakers and cooks with decades of accredited experiences in the culinary field. The personal instruction offered by these experts is something that recipe books and video tutorials cannot replace.
These instructors will be able to demonstrate techniques like knife skills, kitchen hacks and offer tips to organise your mise en place – in other words, the important prep work you have to do even before you begin cooking.
Furthermore, students will learn to perfect new techniques like how to perfectly sear a steak, or utilise the grill, as well as how to sous-vide an egg – a difficult task to accomplish without expert guidance.
The presence of an instructor also means that they can taste test a student’s dishes to make sure the flavours are balanced and to correct any mistakes that might be made immediately.
- Variety of choice
Another benefit of culinary lessons is the variety of cuisines available for students to learn about – from local dishes beloved by Singaporeans to sumptuous South Asian recipes and Mediterranean plates bursting with freshness.
This gives students the chance to expand the repertoire of recipes in their kitchen, which means they no longer have to rely on the same few dishes for meal prep at home, and can whip up delectable plates whenever the occasion calls for it.
Furthermore, almost all culinary lesson providers lean towards healthy cooking, so students can learn to prepare plant-based, vegetarian, vegan, and even gluten-free meals, based on their dietary needs.
- Cost-saving
At cooking lessons, all ingredients and kitchen equipment are provided, which is beneficial for students who are able to try out new equipment before committing to a purchase – food processors, dehydrators and spiralisers are just a few handy tools that can be used during a lesson and purchased for home use.
Furthermore, the ingredients given during a class would have been carefully portioned to reduce wastage, so students would not have to buy entire packs of flour on their own just to bake a few cookies.
Culinary lessons can also encourage dining in instead of eating out, since one can whip up a veritable feast at home with enough skill and tutelage, saving on service costs and miscellaneous charges at a restaurant.
How Do I Choose a Cooking Class?
- Cost
There are a variety of courses for every budget. The Community Centres in Singapore offer the most affordable lessons, but there is less prestige attached to its name – receiving a certificate of completion from a Community Centre course, for example, could be seen as less valuable than an accredited course at a professional culinary institute.
Those who are not concerned about such certifications but would like to be taught in smaller classes can also opt for home-based kitchens. Often, home-based kitchens are more affordable than cooking studios, and they are hosted in small groups which might make it more conducive for detailed instruction.
Students should also note how courses are offered – in packages or single sessions. It might be more cost-effective to sign up for an entire course than a single session if one has no experience or is looking to seriously advance a certain skill set (e.g. bread-making).
- Accessibility
While some cooking studios have several branches dotted around the island, most only have one location. It is best to find a studio that is accessible since even one lesson can take up an entire afternoon.
- Type of cuisine offered
Almost as important as cost is the type of cuisine(s) taught by the culinary institute. Some, like ABC Cooking Studio, specialises in Japanese cuisine, and all their courses lean towards Japanese methods of food preparation as well as Japanese dishes (they even have a wagashi course for those with a sweet tooth).
Others, like Little Green Kitchen, are exclusively focused on vegetarian and vegan dishes. There are also dedicated baking studios that only teach pastry and cake making courses.
Other programmes
As a social activity, cooking lessons are a popular choice for team-building events and private parties – some culinary studios like Cookyn Inc and CulinaryOn exist mainly to cater to groups looking to hold mini cook-offs or culinary challenges as part of bonding activities.
Many places also offer kids’ parties, kids’ classes, and parent-and-kid culinary lessons for aspiring Chefs in the making. Not only do these lessons stimulate a child’s mind and improve their social skills, they provide an avenue to bring parent and child closer.
Culinary school
Culinary schools take one to four years, depending on the program. Most who have obtained their culinary degree can quickly earn positions with greater responsibilities – a gateway to being chefs.
Culinary schools are devoted to the culinary arts. Culinary schools can be one of the best ways to start a chef vocation, depending on the pedigree of the training.

Benefits of Joining A Cooking Class
First and foremost, cooking classes provide an opportunity to learn new skills and techniques. Whether you want to master the art of baking bread or learn how to make a perfect risotto, a cooking class can teach you the basics and help you build on your existing knowledge. In addition, cooking classes often have instructors who are professional chefs or experienced home cooks, so you can learn from someone who has mastered the skills you want to learn.
Another benefit of joining a cooking class is that it can help you develop healthy eating habits. When you cook your meals, you have complete control over the ingredients and portion sizes. This means you can choose healthier options and control the amount of salt, sugar, and fat in your meals. Cooking classes can teach you how to cook healthy meals that are delicious and satisfying, so you can enjoy your food while maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Cooking classes can also be a fun and social activity. You can meet new people who share your interest in cooking and food, and learn from each other’s experiences. Cooking classes often involve teamwork, so you can work with others to prepare a meal and share the final product. This can create a sense of community and camaraderie that can make the cooking experience more enjoyable.
In addition to these benefits, joining a cooking class can also help you save money in the long run. When you know how to cook, you can save money by preparing your meals at home instead of eating out or buying pre-made meals. You can also save money by buying ingredients in bulk and using them to make multiple meals. This can be especially beneficial if you have a large family or want to meal prep for the week ahead.
Finally, joining a cooking class can also help you build your confidence in the kitchen. Cooking can be intimidating, especially if you’re just starting out. But with the guidance of a professional chef or experienced home cook, you can learn the skills you need to cook with confidence. This can translate into other areas of your life, such as work or social situations, where you may need to be more assertive or confident.
In conclusion, joining a cooking class can offer many benefits that can improve your skills, your health, and your social life. From learning new techniques to developing healthy eating habits, cooking classes can help you become a better cook and enjoy the process of cooking more. So why not give it a try and see what you can learn? You may just discover a new passion for cooking and a whole new world of delicious food.
There are many different types of cooking classes available, so it’s important to find one that suits your needs and interests. Some classes are geared towards beginners and cover basic cooking techniques, while others are more advanced and focus on specific cuisines or styles of cooking. There are also classes that specialize in baking, pastry making, and even cocktail mixing.
One of the best things about cooking classes is that they can be tailored to your individual needs and preferences. For example, if you have dietary restrictions or allergies, you can find a class that focuses on cooking for those needs. If you’re interested in a particular cuisine, such as Italian or Thai, you can find a class that specializes in that cuisine. This can help you develop a deeper understanding of the food and culture associated with that cuisine.
In addition to traditional cooking classes, there are also many online cooking classes available. These classes can be more flexible and convenient than in-person classes, as you can take them at your own pace and on your own schedule. Online classes can also be more affordable, as you don’t have to pay for the cost of the physical space or materials. However, online classes may not offer the same level of interaction and hands-on learning as in-person classes.
Another benefit of joining a cooking class is that it can inspire you to try new recipes and experiment with different ingredients. Once you’ve learned the basic techniques and skills, you can start to get creative and put your own spin on classic recipes. This can be a great way to discover new flavors and combinations that you may not have thought of before. You can also start to develop your own signature dishes that you can share with friends and family.
Cooking classes can also help you become more organized and efficient in the kitchen. When you learn how to plan and prepare meals, you can save time and reduce stress in your daily life. You can also learn how to shop for ingredients and store them properly, so you always have what you need on hand. These skills can be especially valuable if you have a busy schedule or a large family to feed.
Can Men Join Makeup Class Too?
First of all, let’s address the elephant in the room. Makeup has traditionally been associated with women, and many people still hold onto the outdated belief that it’s not something that men should be interested in. But times are changing, and so are our attitudes towards gender and gender roles. The truth is, there’s no reason why men can’t wear makeup if they want to. It’s a form of self-expression, just like any other kind of art or fashion. And if you’re interested in learning how to apply makeup, there’s nothing stopping you from doing so.
Now, you might be wondering if makeup classes are open to men. The good news is that many makeup classes and workshops are inclusive and welcome participants of all genders. In fact, more and more makeup artists and beauty schools are recognizing the importance of creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels comfortable to learn and experiment with makeup. So, don’t let your gender hold you back from pursuing your interest in makeup.
Another concern that some men might have about joining a makeup class is that they’ll feel out of place or uncomfortable. It’s understandable to feel nervous about stepping into a new environment, especially if you’re not used to being in a space where men are the minority. But remember, you’re there to learn and improve your skills, just like everyone else in the class. And chances are, your fellow classmates will be supportive and encouraging, regardless of your gender.
In fact, having men in the class can bring a unique perspective and dynamic to the learning experience. As a man, you might have different facial features or skin concerns than your female classmates, and this can lead to valuable insights and discussions. Plus, diversity and representation are important in any learning environment, and by joining a makeup class as a man, you’re helping to break down gender stereotypes and promote inclusivity.
So, if you’re still on the fence about joining a makeup class, here are some tips to help you feel more confident and prepared:
- Do your research: Look for makeup classes and workshops that explicitly state that they are open to men. Read reviews and testimonials from past participants to get a sense of the overall atmosphere and whether it’s a good fit for you.
- Start small: If you’re feeling nervous, start with a beginner’s class or workshop that focuses on the basics of makeup application. This will give you a chance to dip your toes in the water and build your confidence.
- Be open-minded: Remember that you’re there to learn, and that means being open to new ideas and techniques. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or experiment with different products and tools.
- Bring a friend: If you’re still feeling hesitant, consider bringing a friend or family member with you to the class. Having someone you trust by your side can help ease any nerves or anxieties.
- Have fun: Most importantly, remember that makeup is a form of self-expression and creativity. Don’t take it too seriously and have fun with it! Enjoy the process of learning and experimenting with different looks.
