What is boxing?
Boxing is a combat sport that involves two people fighting with their fists. The two fighters usually wear protective gloves and throw punches at each other in a boxing ring for a predetermined period of time.
Boxing is typically overseen by a referee. Both fighters box within one- to – three-minute intervals, also known as rounds.
Where did boxing originate from?
While humans have been involved in fist-fighting for the longest period of time, the earliest evidence of fist-fighting as a sporting event can be dated back to the 2nd and 3rd millennia BC.
The earlier evidence of boxing events with clearly-defined rules dates back to Ancient Greece. It was during this period that boxing was established as an Olympic game.
Today, amateur boxing is a standard fixture in both the Olympic and Commonwealth games. Given its popularity throughout the world, it even has its own World Championships – such as the AIBA World Boxing Championships and the International Boxing Federation Championship.
What are the benefits associated with boxing?
Boxing is one of those sports that is constant in the realm of health trends and fitness. It is never completely taking the world by storm, not fading out of sight.
And there are plenty of good reasons why!
Boxing is one of those sports that improve your overall physical and mental health. Regardless of whether you are pursuing it as a professional sport or as a fitness activity, the benefits associated with boxing are manifold.
Improves your overall body strength
If you have watched a boxing event, you will likely see a lot of punching, kicking, and even jumping. All these action-packed moves require a surprising amount of strength!
During a boxing class, you will likely punch or kick a heavy bag hundreds of times. This requires you to engage your entire body and core muscles.
Besides punching or kicking the bag, the instructors will also incorporate other strength training exercises such as squats or push-up into the boxing workout.
In short, be prepared for a full-body boxing workout.
Enhances your cardiovascular health
Health experts are constantly advocating the importance of engaging in some cardio to protect yourself from heart diseases, burn calories, and maintain your weight.
While you can get your cardio fix by running on the treadmill, it seems rather boring to be running on the spot for 30 minutes.
Instead, why not challenge yourself by punching and kicking your way to a healthy heart at your local boxing gym.
Reduces your stress levels
Ever felt like you were so frustrated or stressed that you need to take it out on something? Boxing is the perfect way for you to really let go and sweat it out.
Numerous research has shown that any form of moderate to intense physical activity helps to reduce stress levels.
Improves your hand-eye coordination
You may not think twice about the importance of hand-eye coordination, but in reality, it has a major impact on your gross and fine motor skills.
People with excellent hand-eye coordination tend to have faster reflexes, quick reaction times and good overall physical coordination.
Boxing can help you to train your hand-eye coordination with its punching movements and while sparring with a partner. It will be tough, but with practice, your hand-eye coordination will definitely improve substantially.

How should I prepare for my first boxing lesson?
Wonder how you should be preparing for your very first boxing lesson? Here are some tips to bear in mind:
Wear comfortable workout clothing
Boxing, like any other combat sport, is a high-intensity exercise that requires you to move a lot. As you will be sweating buckets, the last thing that you want is to feel hot and stick in your clothes.
Cool, breathable and absorbent fabrics are ideal for the class. Concurrently, you will want to wear pants that do not slide down as you will be squatting and jumping a lot during the class. For the ladies, it would be wise to wear a workout headband to keep your hair in place.
Bring a huge water bottle
All the punching and kicking will make you sweat a lot and you will definitely need to hydrate yourself constantly to prevent dehydration. Bring along a water bottle that can hold at least up to a litre of water.
Some may also recommend getting a water bottle with a straw so that you can easily reach for your water bottle without having to remove your boxing gloves during the lesson.
Arrive early for your boxing lesson
Regardless of whether it is your first boxing lesson or not, it is always a good idea to arrive at least 15 to 30 minutes early.
Turning up early for your lesson allows you to get yourself all setup and comfortable. For some boxing gyms, arriving early allows the instructor to wrap your hands prior to the lesson and they may even share with you some basic moves so that you do not get lost during the lesson.
What can I expect from my first boxing lesson?
While each boxing class varies from gym to gym, be prepared for a full-body workout. The instructor will most likely start off with some warm-up exercise to prepare your body before moving on to the cardio conditioning to get your heart pumping.
Expect conditioning exercises such as burpees, push-ups, mountain climbers, and squats.
In between these condition exercises, the instructor will likely teach you some boxing moves including hitting of pads or heavy bags.
What are some of the basic boxing styles that I will learn?
Throughout the lesson, you will likely hear the instructor call out some moves such as jab or uppercut. What do they all mean?
In boxing, there are several boxing styles and punches. Here are some of the more common and basic punches that will be taught in every boxing class:
- Jab
- Cross
- Hook
- Uppercut
If you are unsure about any of the moves, it is always good to check in with your instructor on the correct stance and punch. Having proper form ensures that you use the right muscle group for each move and also minimise the risk of injuries.
