What is botox?
Botulinum toxin, also commonly known as botox, is a drug made from toxins secreted by bacteria. While it may sound scary, the dosage used in botox is often too small to cause any life threatening reactions. The drug comes in powder form and it is diluted with saline into injectable doses.
How do botox procedures work?
With a micro-needle, botox is injected into targeted areas of your face or body. Only small doses are injected into each muscle during the procedure. Botox causes temporary muscle paralysis, blocking specific nerve signals that cause muscles to contract. This keeps the targeted muscle areas relaxed for a period of time.
Botox treatments are not permanent. Once the results wear off, you will need to return to the clinic for another treatment. Before signing up for any botox procedure, it is crucial that you engage a qualified medical practitioner. This ensures that correct dosages are administered and it reduces the risks of possible side effects due to wrong application methods.

Common uses of botox treatment
Most commonly used as a cosmetic treatment, botox is often used to prevent facial wrinkles. However, not many know that botox can also be used to treat several other medical conditions. Here are some of the popular uses of botox treatments:
Non-invasive facelift
Botox is widely known for its ability to prevent and delay the effects of aging. It offers a non-invasive alternative to keep the skin firm as the botox injections keeps your muscles relaxed. This can help to enhance certain facial features and firm up sagging skin without having to undergo the knife.
Reduce severe underarm sweating
There are various sweat glands found in your underarms and overactive nerves can cause your underarms to sweat profusely even when you are not doing any vigorous activity. This can be an annoying and embarrassing condition that may result in social anxiety and stress. Botox can help to combat this condition by blocking the chemical that activates the sweat glands, hence reducing the amount of sweat produced.
Prevent chronic migraine
Chronic migraines can usually last for weeks or months and it can affect one’s ability to function properly. This can be extremely detrimental to an individual’s mental and physical well being. By injecting Botox into certain areas of your head and neck, it can help prevent migraines by blocking specific neurotransmitters.
Treat overactive bladder
An overactive bladder can cause several symptoms such as urinary urgency and urgency incontinence. This can be a major disruption to your quality of life. Botox has been proven effective in controlling such conditions. It is injected into the bladder muscle to temporarily paralyze the thick muscle band and nerves that trigger your bladder. This calms your bladder muscles, preventing them from overstimulating and minimises the frequency of needing to urinate urgently.
Benefits of botox treatments
The thought of having bacteria injected into your body may sound bizarre and terrifying, so what makes botox such a popular treatment around the world? This is probably due to the many benefits botox treatments can offer.
Here are some reasons why you should consider one:
Low risk
Botox is a minimally invasive procedure that does not require you to undergo surgery to achieve your desired results, hence reducing risks of complications. While it does not eliminate the possible risks, such as slight drooping or bruising at the injected area, the side effects of botox treatments are usually uncommon and temporary.
Convenient procedure
During the procedure, doctors may apply numbing cream to the areas before injecting. This makes the botox injections relatively low on the pain scale level. You may notice bumps after the initial injection but these will often subside after a few minutes. The whole treatment is usually completed within minutes and no hospitalization is required, making it an extremely quick and convenient procedure.
Quick results
Depending on the area of application, you will be able to see the results showing a few days after the botox treatment. The period to achieve maximum results can vary depending on a few factors such as your age, gender and type of botox used. After the botox takes effect, you can enjoy the results of your treatment for the next few months before it fades.
Things to consider before getting a botox treatment
Perhaps one of the most popular cosmetic treatments around the world, botox is seeing a rapid growth in it’s fan base over the years. Here are some things to take note of before signing up for a botox treatment:
Credibility of medical clinic
Ensure that you seek treatment from a board certified, trained and recognised medical doctor. Avoid cheap treatments from inexperienced doctors or clinics that are not certified. The use of unapproved botox solutions and poor administration can result in severe side effects and adverse reactions. Conducting prior research and checking past client reviews can help to establish the credibility of the clinic and doctor.
Consultation session
Many clinics offer consultation sessions for a small fee. It is strongly recommended to undergo a consultation session before signing up for any treatments. This is a great opportunity for the doctor to assess your suitability for the botox procedure and for you to discuss your desired look. If you have any allergies, you should bring it up during the session. Aside from understanding the procedure, it also ensures that you are aware of the possible risks and post treatment care required.
Your body condition
Although there is currently no clinical evidence, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is strongly advisable to avoid botox treatments. You should also avoid taking drugs and supplements before any treatment. As they may have blood thinning effects, this could affect the healing process and increase the risk of bruising during the injection. If you are unsure about your medication, always consult your doctor beforehand.
