Review 1 | Hi, I am Davian from Eunoia Junior College. I personally feel that Ms Yap’s lessons are very helpful to me, especially with the support system of online digital lessons. I have missed a couple of lessons previously, and she has released the digital lessons online which has allowed me to review at home what was being taught during the lesson and catch up on what my peers are doing in tuition, so I find that it is very useful.
If I may add, previously I was scoring a U in my school examinations. However, after joining Ms Yap’s tuition, I have finally managed to clinch my A. I think that Ms Yap is very helpful as the questions that she gives are very useful and applicable to the syllabus that I am studying. I believe this is what helped me to get my A. By Davian, Eunoia Junior College |
Review 2 | Hi, I am Sieu Xin from TJC. Before coming to this tuition, I was not able to apply the content learnt in Biology to the questions in the school’s tutorial. I was lost due to the fast pace of the school lectures. After coming to Ms Yap’s tuition, I was able to better see links between the topics (which I was not able to before), and apply the content learned to the questions. Ms Yap is also a very conscientious teacher who tries to help me to the best of her ability. Before coming for her tuition, I was scoring a single digit and after going to her tuition, I was able to achieve the 89th percentile (in my school) for my Biology mid-year examinations.
By Sieu Xin, Temasek Junior College |
Review 3 | Hi, I am Brian. I am currently studying in River Valley High School and taking the Biology A-levels this year. Before I came to Ms Yap’s tuition, I was with another tuition centre offering Biology tuition. I feel that the main difference between that tuition centre, my school and Ms Yap is that Ms Yap provides notes that are a lot more detailed, so we learn a lot more than what is taught in school. This is very important because I feel it will be very helpful for Paper 3 (Paper 3 includes long structured data-based questions) and this is what’s going to help me in the future. Ms Yap is really good- Ms Yap has taught me how to study Biology in a more efficient way, and her materials are geared towards helping students to do well in the exams.

Review 1 | My journey at The Learning Lab through these 9 years has been particularly phenomenal – it has inspired and guided me in preparing solidly for the future. To find success in what you’re striving towards, first, find joy in it. To me, The Learning Lab’s approach to education can be surmised as an irresistible combination of enriching material and passionate teachers. They were inspiring and knowledgeable, delivering a quality of education that I simply could not find elsewhere.
Till this date, I still remember my visceral disappointment when I realised I would miss a Math lesson due to a family holiday, as my teacher had promised to apply geometry and spatial concepts to show us the unimaginable – how to create a hole on a piece of A4 paper large enough for us to walk through. It is hence this compelling combination that first showed me that learning could be fun, and filled me with palpable excitement whenever I learnt something new that stretched me beyond my peers. Whether it was the intensive exam preparations or the thorough content lectures, it has supported my academic growth and allowed me to achieve my personal bests. By Clarence Cheong, TLL Student from 2004 to 2014 |
Review 2 | The Learning Lab has provided me with treasured opportunities to excel and explore. Apart from its impeccable academic curriculum, its Future Leaders Program has brought me to the internationally acclaimed Harvard Model Congress thrice with my Learning Lab peers. On all three occasions, our team was conferred the distinguished award of excellence.
This is a clear testimony to how adequately The Learning Lab prepares you for a worldly stage by bringing learning out of the classroom. Apart from the obvious takeaway of the awards, it has endowed me with better public speaking skills, the great experience of an overseas trip, and frankly a great lot of fun. By Lu Hao, TLL student from 2010 to 2013 |
Review 3 | The Learning Lab is more than just an enrichment centre – it is an established institution that has shaped me into the person I am proud to be today. The culture of the place is that of reverence – respect for the teachers, the learning and the environment. Every Saturday, my English teacher would bring us through a repertoire of enticing materials. There was a liberating sense of freedom in her classroom that I treasure deeply. Every input was valued and considered, and everyone felt safe contributing to an invigorating discussion. My English teacher’s surfeit of knowledge and prodigious wisdom on the world still inspires me today.
With the Learning Lab, I was exposed to ideas and insights that served as the perfect complement to what I was learning in school. Beyond the classroom, I had the privilege of attending the Harvard Model Congress in San Francisco in 2013 and the Global Young Leaders Conference in Washington D.C. and New York City in 2014. TLL provided me with the opportunities to bring my learning outside of the classroom and apply it in the global context. By Kate Lim Ji Won, TLL student from 2012 to 2014 |

Review 1 | My Biology in j1 was a consistent U and then I joined the Learners Lodge which provided me with notes and practices which helped me to improve from a U to a C and eventually an A in my A levels. Mr Alex Xu helped me greatly as well as he gave me his own handwritten notes which I could read up on before the exams and he was always prompt to reply to my texts.
By Nidhish Krishnan, Catholic Junior College |
Review 2 | Mr Alex Xu is a great motivation for me to do well. He showed a deep understanding of the topics he taught. He presents key points in a clear and explicit way, making complex ideas easier to understand, clearing any question I had unanswered. Mr Alex is a teacher that devotes much time for his class, continuously giving us extra lesson even though he had a tight schedule. Thanks, Mr Alex for always being there to encourage us through tough times.
By Japheth Goh, Yishun Innova Junior College |
Review 3 | The funny antics and iconic trademarks of Mr Alex Xu’s lessons were a highlight every lesson I attended, the hilarious ways utilised to help us memorise keywords such as ‘Entry Passwords’ definitely made his lessons deeply imprinted in my mind. The concise notes provided and the clear explanations and answering tips provided by him were very helpful in my Bio learning as well, and eventually allowed me to get an A for bio. I’m very thankful 🙂

Review 1 | Smartlab teachers are excellent and dedicated. They stressed on understanding key concepts and formulas rather than mere memorization and as a consequence, it increased my ability to apply concepts well when faced with foreign questions. The extra notes they supplied for practice has helped me greatly. These worksheets allowed me to familiarize with alien topics. I would like to say thank you to the devoted teachers who willingly extended their help way past lesson time just so that I can clarify all doubts. Their efforts were pivotal in helping me secure an A1 and I am extremely grateful for their constant support.

Review 2 | My Biology teacher, Ms Kok is very patient in explaining the various concepts and terms to us. In class, she personally asks us whether we understand. She is always willing to go the extra mile to answer our questions through WhatsApp before exams. SmartLab has helped me to understand Biology concepts better by exposing us to various questions and even explaining terms out of the syllabus. Even though some concepts are out of the syllabus and were in fact from A-levels syllabus, they were vital and crucial in helping the students understand better. The worksheets provided include all kinds of questions with all sorts of difficulty level. This definitely helped to expose the students and through practice, drilled them and made them excel in exams as they no longer had to face the exam questions with fear. I would like to say a very big thank you to Ms Kok for answering so many of my Biology questions through WhatsApp and even calling me up to explain to me when I did not get her explanation through text.

Review 3 | SmartLab helps me in understanding the more difficult concepts in Physics and Chemistry example Magnetism in Physics and Electrolysis in Chemistry. For Biology, exposure to different questions and twisting of concepts. The teachers give lots of revisions, mostly from other schools preliminary papers leading up to the exam. They also constantly ask questions in class to check on our understandings. Notes and worksheets offer more detailed information as compared to typical school notes and textbooks. This allows greater understanding in some of the more difficult to understand or explain parts, such as how a generator or motor work. Thank you, teachers, for the constant effort and hard work put in to ensure that there is complete understanding from me.

Review 1 | Ms Chen is an experienced tutor with an incredible amount of resources for us. She is able to explain difficult concepts with simple terms as well as provide concise notes. Despite only joining the class at the end of J1, Ms Chen has helped me improve tremendously. Really grateful to have been under her guidance and attained an A at the A levels

Review 3 | I’ve joined Ms Chen since sec 3 for both biology and chemistry and I’ve honestly seen a big jump in my grades since then. Science had always been a challenging subject that was hard for me to grasp, but with Ms Chen’s constant guidance and notes, I felt like I could finally understand the concepts so much better. Ms Chen has taught me all the way to J2 and I’m proud to say that I’ve achieved the grade I wanted in my A’levels and it’s all thanks to Ms Chen:-) Really glad to have found and joined this tuition!

Reviews | “My chemistry used to be very unstable such that my lowest grade was S and highest was B. However they tend to fluctuate at the lower grades (C-S) as I was not clear with the concepts. Nearing A levels, I decided I needed help and Alice was my lifesaver. She helped me to be more consistent in my work as well as explained all that I didn’t understand simply. What I liked about Alice is that she is patient with explaining concepts that you do not understand. Her teaching style was very compatible with me as her constant paper practices helped me to be more confident in tackling various types of questions. With constant drilling, I eventually got an A for chemistry in A levels. Alice was a very bright and patient teacher and I would definitely recommend her if you need help in chemistry. – Cherie from Raffles Institution 2018
“Ms Alice’s enduring patience and genuine compassion are what makes her exceptional as a tutor. Under her guidance, she has helped me gain confidence and attain mastery in H2 Chemistry. Her meticulous organisation of notes and mindmaps greatly simplified the diversity of concepts in Inorganic Chemistry and allowed for easy visualisation of the relationships between various organic compounds. With her help, my chemistry grades dramatically improved from a D in my JC2 Prelims to an A for the A Levels. Under the guidance of Ms Alice, I am sure her students will be inspired to improve in their studies and reach their fullest potential. – Lim Jin Feng from River Valley High School 2019 |

Should I enrol my child for biology tuition?
At the end of the day, it is entirely up to you to enrol your child in biology tuition. Tuition is not a necessity. However, it can be a meaningful investment in your children’s education if your child is struggling to catch up in school. Sometimes, attending tuition can also give your child an edge over their peers in school.
Benefits of biology tuition
Additional notes and resources
When it comes to preparing for examinations, especially national examinations such as the GCE Ordinary and GCE Advanced Level examinations, additional notes and resources are always something helpful to have on hand for revision and examinations preparations. Most students rely on their school textbooks which are thick and not summarised, which results in them wasting their precious revision time.
Students might also have the chance to tackle practice questions from various schools from the resources that the tuition centre provides.
More attention
More often than not, there are 30 to 40 students in a class on average, and it is near impossible for the teacher to be able to focus on each and every student individually. At tuition classes, which are usually held in much smaller class sizes, the student is able to receive more attention from the tutor regarding his or her learning progress.
Tailored learning
The curriculum of tuition classes is tailored according to the students’ needs, which is more beneficial to the student’s learning.
Interaction with students from other schools
At group tuition classes, students are given the opportunities to meet and interact with their peers from other schools, and sometimes, students from neighbourhood schools are able to learn from elite school students.
Crash courses
Tuition centre tends to organise crash courses and workshops to help students better prepare for the upcoming examinations. These crash courses and workshops often cover the tips and tricks such as time management and the things to take note in order to ace those examinations.
How to choose a biology tuition
Cost
The affordability should be one of the first few things to consider when finding for a tuition centre or private tutor. It would be ideal to find a tuition centre or tutor that meet the parents’ budget. It would not be wise to invest in a tuition centre or tutor which is not within your budget range.
Availability and accessibility
The second most important factor to take into consideration when choosing a tuition centre or tutor is the availability of classes and the accessibility in terms of location. You don’t want to be choosing tuition centres which are so far away that most of the time is spent on travelling instead of resting or learning.
Results/testimonials
One surefire way to find out if the tuition centre or tutor is effective and worth the investment is to check out the testimonials and results of their past students. This would allow you to make a more informed choice.
Group vs private tuition
If you are unsure of whether group or individual tuition suits you or your child’s needs better, here are some of the pros and cons to consider.
Group tuition
- Similar to a classroom setting in school
- Opportunities to interact with students from other schools
- Learn from the different point of views of students
- Generally, a more affordable option compared to private tuition
- Get to enjoy amenities and benefits from tuition centres
Private tuition
- Undivided one on one attention
- Location is at your convenience
- Duration and timing of lessons are more flexible compared to group tuitions
- More tailored learning as tutee can learn at his or her own pace
- No registration fees or material fees needed
- Most private tutors do not require a minimum commitment period
- Tutors have more opportunity to get to know students on a more personal level
