What is Belly Dance?

Belly dancing is the Western name for a type of Middle Eastern dance, also known as Raqs Sharki. It is traditionally a solo dance form and known for its belly undulations, shaking buttocks and intricate hip movements – hence its name. It is said that the best belly dances can swivel and gyrate their rips, and even ripple their stomachs!

Belly dancing varies from region to region. Each region has a different style of dancing and the costumes can vary in style and design.

Over the years, belly dancing has gained popularity as a form of fitness and even as an art.

Where did belly dance originate from?

Belly dance was said to have originated in the Middle East, particularly in Turkey, Egypt, and Cairo. In fact, Cairo is said to be the belly dancing capital of the Middle East!

In the 1960s and 1970s, belly dancing gained popularity in the United States as a result of the feminist movement. By this time, belly dancing has gained a reputation as being a sensual dance. As such, Western women worked hard to reinvent belly dancing as a form of dance that empowers women.

What are the styles of belly dance?

Despite the fact that belly dance originated from the Middle East, there are various styles of belly dancing. Here are some of the common styles of belly dance and what makes them so unique and alluring!

Egyptian Raqs Sharqi

The Egyptian Raqs Sharqi is commonly referred to as Raqs Sharqi, which also means Dance of the Orient. This style of belly dancing is typically more emotional, relaxed, graceful and simple. As this style of dancing is very authentic and traditional, props such as veils or finger cymbals are typically not used.

Most Raqs Sharqi dancers prefer to follow a vintage look with their costumes, and are often decked in bra and belt and a great deal of chiffon.

Turkish Oriental

Turkish Oriental belly dancing, on the other hand, is fiery, fast and breathtaking. This type of dance is typically associated with finger cymbals, swirling veils and provocative floorwork.

Costumes for Turkish Oriental belly dancing often include rhinestones, crystals, beads and are usually fringed.

Iraqi Kawleeya

The Iraqi Kawleeya style of belly dancing is typically considered more traditional and leans towards a Gypsy style of dancing. The Kawleeya form of belly dancing is the most popular style within the Gulf states.

Dancers typically wear long flowing dresses without exposing any parts of their body. Any adornments on their costumes is also kept to a minimum. Perhaps the most defining aspects of the dancers is the hairstyle, in which dancers use their hair frequently in their movements to emphasize them.

Benefits of belly dance

Belly dance is a great way to stay in shape and gain confidence regardless of your dance background! Belly dancing is known to promote balance, strength, coordination and confidence. While it is empowering and fun, the health benefits of belly dancing are often highly underestimated.

Here are some ways in which belly dancing can benefit you:

Gain strength and tone muscles

Belly dancing helps to tone muscles throughout the body. The movements in belly dance were created to work those core feminine muscles, such as your glutes, obliques and quads. Belly dancing can be a great workout once you get lost in the music!

Increases your confidence

Belly dancing, similar to other dance forms, allows your body to release endorphins, essentially the “feel good” hormones. Furthermore, as you become familiar with the movements, you will definitely want to show those belly dance movements off!

Hones your social skills

Belly dance classes are a great way to meet new people and make new friends! It is a great way to experience your dance journey together and build new connections with people from all walks of life.

How should I prepare for my first belly dance class?

Congratulations for signing up for your first belly dance class! As with any first-time classes, it may be exciting yet nerve-wrecking. Questions like what should you wear, what to bring, or how will the class flow be like will definitely be popping in your head the night before.

Fret not! Here are some tips to help you prepare for your first belly dance class.

What to wear

One of the best aspects of belly dance is that you get to dance in bare feet! This means that there is no need to splurge on experience footwear or suffer pinched toes.

To allow you to view the dance movement on your body, it would be best to wear yoga pants and a form-fitting top. It is not necessary to wear a crop top to show your belly. However, it is recommended to wear a scarf around your hips so as to help you see the movements clearly.

What to expect

Most lessons begin with a simple warm-up and cool-down exercise to stretch the body and muscles. Do not worry if you are not a full-time yogi. The idea is to get the joints and muscles prepared for the dance movements.

The dance instructors will typically start the first few classes with basic footwork as well as hip work. Over time, the instructors will start to add complexity to the movements depending on the class progress. Some instructors will also share more about the type of music and history of belly dance so that you are able to appreciate the various styles of belly dancing.

Personal practice

In order to get the most out of your belly dance classes, it is good to practise at home so that you do not end up getting lost in the subsequent classes. Even if you are unable to remember the full dance choreography, it may be helpful to practise one or two of the movements for a few minutes a day to get the movements right. With regular practice, you will improve over time and who knows, you may someday be a professional belly dancer!
