The Bar Scene in Singapore
When it comes to nightlife, very few cities around Asia can beat the pulse of Singapore’s scene. With an abundance of nightclubs, eateries and bars, the night’s still young in the lion city.
In this article, we’re going to talk about bars. Expensive ones, cheap ones. Bars that you bring your clients for a night out. Bars where you can be seen and meet new people. Bars that allow you to have a contemplative night after a hard day’s work. Bars that have a few accolades to boast. Bars that are so hidden that they could add to your hipster street cred.
In a country where the renowned Singapore Sling was invented, you can be sure there’s no shortage of bars here!
Bars and nightclubs, what’s the difference?
Over the years, megaclubs, such as Zouk have their in-house bars. However, the vibe and scene of both places are still worlds apart. Sure, both of them serve alcohol. You can even get to meet people in both places. Yet, how you meet may be different.
Clubs are high stimulus environments, offering music of higher intensity. They have a strict dress code. Due to their tendency for being highly crowded, clubs employ bouncers to screen away people who might not “fit” the image and vibe of the club. The music is booming. It’s hard to speak to others, and it’s not uncommon for people to acquaint with each other through dancing instead. That’s probably the purpose. It’s for people to go wild (within limits) and dance the night away.
Bars offer entirely different energy from clubs. There’s no dress code. However, you wouldn’t like to get unwanted stares if you dress really off, would you? Popular music featured in bars is usually easy-listening chill-out music that includes genres like Downtempo, Ambient and Jazz. Some bars have their own in-house bands who play on selected nights. A more upscale bar, often at hotels, may also feature a pianist and a live singer. Unlike in a club, you can still communicate with your friendly clearly without shouting when the music is playing in the backdrop.
Bars are the laidback type of places where you and your friends come to unwind. At times, the younger crowd would visit a bar for a nightlife “warm-up” before heading to the more intense nightlife establishments. If the bar is within a club, it’s usually a place for patrons to take a break and recharge before heading back into the area of action.
Additionally, bars can also be a place where you can network. Unlike formal business events, people are less guarded in bars as everyone’s there to relax. Of course, that doesn’t mean you should head straight into a bar and start talking shop with the first patron you see! Get to know that person before moving onto a heavy-weighted topic such as business.
I know everyone’s hype-up for a night of fun and drinks by now. Without further ado, presenting to you, in no particular order, the top 20 bars in Singapore!

Review 1 | “Amazingly pictural bar that offers a wide variety of gins, the Art deco style is amazing and the staff is very skilled and knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend this and will go back there soon!” |
Review 2 | “Was looking forward to this place. My friend had reserved a table 2 weeks ago. You need to reach the place on time otherwise they could cancel your reservation. The service and ambience, of course, is top-notch. I ordered the urban pioneer gin cocktail which had strong flavours. They serve complimentary baked sweet potato chips. The whole experience was perfect! We also roamed around and took some pictures. Loved the art deco 1920s vibes.” |
Review 3 | “It’s on the top 50 best bars list and once you enter it’s easy to see why. The facade and decor wouldn’t look out of place in an Egyptian museum. That being said it is wickedly crowded and hard to get a reservation. Your best bet is to try a weeknight or very late on a weekend. We went on a Saturday at 1 am and got lucky to get a nice seat. Drinks are great. They have an extensive gin collection to boot and their cocktails are on point. Definitely worth checking out irrespective of whether you are staying here or just visiting.” |

Review 1 | “Operation Dagger has been voted one of the best bars in the world and I can see why. Its creativity and innovation deserve recognition. While it is mainly minimalist, it does have an eye-catching feature above the bar – its 10,000 light bulbs! The bartenders will guide you through the menu!” |
Review 2 | “Hidden find which makes finding the place interesting. Then comes their alcohol menu! To maintain their secrecy on the drinks.. all I can say is.. try and find this place and it’s a cool find. Service-wise, the staff were very engaging and willing to take the time to explain the interesting menu without giving away any secrets! Be careful when you find the stairs to this place though 😉 I’ll definitely be heading back just to sample their other drinks!” |
Review 3 | “This speakeasy bar is hidden in a basement on Ann Siang Hill, but that doesn’t stop the crowds from coming on a weekend. For the best experience, come in on a weekday and sit right at the bar. I had a savoury cocktail with aged cheddar — it was amazing! Thanks, Ash for your hospitality, I’ll be back!” |

Review 1 | “This has all the ingredients worthy of a Michelin star. Innovative dishes, cutting edge ingredients, lovely presentation, fabulous flavours. Incredible cocktails that pair well. Topped with great service. The special Dinner Experience Menu on Mondays and Tuesdays is really a great value for money deal!” |
Review 2 | “We were recommended Tippling Club by several friends and were not disappointed. A very friendly welcome at the bar where we started our evening with great, unique cocktails. We were then lucky enough to sit and enjoy the Classic tasting menu at the kitchen counter, where we could oversee all the action from the tremendous kitchen team. The food was exceptional, with an array of delicious courses interspersed with surprise ‘snacks’ and desserts. We chose to do the drinks pairing which complimented the menu perfectly (a mix of cocktails and wine). We can’t wait to come back again and enjoy this amazing food in a friendly and laid-back environment.” |
Review 3 | “This place truly deserves a Michelin star. We just finished a 2-course lunch which was more like 8 courses. I can’t say enough about how amazing every snack and the courses were. The drinks were wonderful as well. Worth a visit!” |

Review 1 | “Was looking for a place with my company to celebrate our colleague’s birthday. Everywhere was the same old and thus we decided to try out a place which we have not been to before.
As Singapore’s first-ever arcade-bar, Clarke Quay’s newest addition Level Up takes things, well, a level up – with not one, two, but a whole slew of over 10 game machines for you to enjoy as you tipple. Right from the get-go, you’ll know that Level Up isn’t any ordinary bar. Stepping in, you’ll be greeted with bright graffiti murals featuring characters from your favourite childhood video games – such as Street Fighter’s Chun-Li and Bub the dino from Puzzle Bobble – all expertly spray-painted by local street artists! Even the toilets aren’t forgotten – they’re lined with hundreds of pages from old Archie comics! Now you’ll have something other than your dying phone to pass time with when bathroom queues get long. Every food or drink order will get you game tokens, and the number of tokens you’ll receive depends on your purchase. One drink will get you 2 tokens, which is just enough for 1 game. If the game tokens that come with your bar bites and beverages aren’t enough, feel free to purchase more at the following rates: Overall is a good place to drink for a gamer.” |
Review 2 | “Good place to gather with friends and for couples too! A lot of games and drinks. Advice is to get a drink each and buy tokens separately then you can have a time of your life playing the arcade games and bad games available! A nice and unique idea! Really loved the vibe here, especially with live music!” |
Review 3 | “Very interesting concept to combine Arcade with Bistro. Although prices already expected to be steep, the place still provides good food, good drinks and ambience. Definitely great for friends gathering.” |

Long Bar (Temporarily Closed on Phase 2) |

It would be an absolute blasphemy for us not to include Long Bar in our list. This was the bar that put Singapore’s nightlife scene on the world map. Review 1 | “What an introduction to my first ever Singapore Sling! This is a must for any first time visitor to Singapore. The staff were very friendly and the prices were not overly expensive. There can be a bit of a queue but I would say it is worth the wait, and you get to admire the splendour of the hotel as well!” |
Review 2 | “Very good, classical drinks. The staff really separates this bar from the rest. Amazing people, amazing experience. Very special thanks to Casper for going the extra mile- we appreciate it :)” |
Review 3 | “Well, it is, in fact, the best Singapore Sling in Singapore. Sure the prices are eye-watering, but it’s Singapore! Prices are nuts all around. In my head, I rationalized the price of the drink as basically including free entrance to an extremely cool old school colonial bar.” |

A rooftop nightlife experience with a traditional touch of the heartlands. The name is a play on how some older Singaporeans might pronounce the word “roof”. Review 2 | “Do make a prior reservation to avoid disappointment. Can be full on weekdays evening. Wide variety of beverage menu. The food menu is limited but almost all the dish is good! We ordered at least 8 items from the menu, all are tasty. Maybe chicken satay is a bit ordinary, but the sauce is yummy! Wanna shoutout for the Tuna Skewer! Definitely will come back and will recommend to friends.” |

Review 2 | “Cocktails were surprisingly good – just when I’ve lost my faith in cocktails in general after having too many bad ones! Had one called Smoked Longan, and another one that’s gin and tonic with an Indian gin called Hapusa. The bartender was enthusiastically explaining about their cocktails, choice of decoration etc but unfortunately, it was too noisy to hear with the mask on. Nice first night of phase 2!” |
Review 3 | “During my stay to Singapore I tried many cocktail bars, and had fantastic cocktails crafted with so much passion, but Native is definitely my favorite one. The place is pretty basic but the cocktails are quite the contrary. Tried two from the new menu and loved them both. The staff is so friendly and they explain the background and origins of each cocktail, which I truly appreciated.” |

Review 2 | “Has truly one of the best bar rooftop views in Singapore.
The most ideal view period at 1-Altitude is probably during sundown, from 6 pm to 8 pm for an after-work chill-out session with drinks to catch an unobstructed view of the whole city, it’s sure to impress. I’ve to say the hard straw seats are not entirely comfortable, you might choose to just stand around as well. Expect delectable bar bites to music spun by top international DJs by night. Nothing too fancy, but great classic cocktails that won’t go out of fashion.” |
Review 3 | “This bar offers what I consider to be the best view of Singapore. It’s breathtaking! The city skyline looks like a cyberpunk city from the future at night with the horizon painted with lights. You can also see plenty of boats in the distance, a true depiction of Singapore’s successful maritime history and the bustling city. You can also watch the marina bay sands light up during its water and light show but if u really want to watch this spectacular light show you’ll need to go right down to the Marina Bay Sands for the best view. I really love the nice atmosphere at this rooftop bar. The view is the star of the show! Go and check it out! Women enter for free on Wednesday, guys always need to pay for entry. Make sure you’re wearing long pants.” |

Review 1 | “Loved Holey Moley! So much fun for couples or maybe just for mates. It would also be a great spot for work do. Good fun playing a few holes of crazy golf especially with a few beers. At $50 a person, it’s a bit pricey in fairness, but we generally go when they have an offer on. The night we were there, they had live music which was fantastic. Will defo go back.” |
Review 2 | “Super fun activity to do especially on ladies night! ( ladies play 1 round – 9 holes) for free after 8 pm. Mini golf, Jenga and lots of laughs. Great for small groups. Will hang out here again for sure!” |
Review 3 | “I like the vibes here, with the neon lights and dim lighting. Recommended for couples, families and friends to have a good weekend together. Price are reasonable and the game is absolutely fun! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!” |

Tips to Have a Fantastic Night Out at a Bar
What’s your purpose of heading out?
This is the fundamental question you have to ask yourself before investing time, money and energy for a night out. For all you know, you can still have an enjoyable night at home watching Netflix with a glass of wine.
If your goal is to have a contemplative night by yourself, choose a bar that has charming décor and lesser crowds. There are lots of bars in the suburbs which could fulfil your needs.
If you’re a social butterfly and like to meet new people, choose a bar that is designed for that. A bar with tables and armrest chairs, looking like a restaurant can be challenging to talk to new people. Chances are, the people are well-settled and would prefer to remain in the comfort of their social circle. Instead, choose a bar with either a very long bar table where you can roam around freely, or where tables that are meant for people to congregate without sitting, like 1-Altitude. Bars with facilities such as a billiard table, beer pong tables or pool can make it easier for starting a conversation. The best bars are those with social events where attendees are already primed to meet others.
For those of you heading out for a romantic date and need a rooftop bar with spectacular views, there’s plenty to choose from. Want to stare into the southern seas with your partner in your arms? Try Dusk with their breathtaking views of Sentosa and their surrounding waters. How about a view of the city’s skyline while remaining in the comfort of exclusivity? Mr Stork is a rooftop bar that offers you a tepee hut, where you can have an intimate moment with each other and also a 360-degree panoramic view of the cityscape.
If you don’t drink…
There’s nothing to be embarrassed about if you don’t have any alcohol street cred. If you’re new to drinking and like to get a taster, ask the bartender to recommend something that’s low on alcohol content.

If you don’t drink and don’t wish to drink. Don’t worry. There are several non-alcoholic drinks, such as mocktails available. Bars also offer delicious finger food which you can munch on.
Do NOT let anyone, not even your boss or clients, coerce you into drinking. Lifestyle choices shouldn’t be forced onto you. If you don’t have a reason that’s not religious which prevents you from drinking, simply smile and tell them politely that you don’t drink. You are not obligated to give lengthy justifications, which may sometimes allow them to debate you into drinking.
Chances are, people will respect you more if you stand firm on your ground instead of succumbing to peer pressure.
If your friends are questioning your manhood or mocking at you for not drinking, it’s time to get new friends. Just saying!
When meeting people in bars…
Don’t approach people in an angle where they’re not given a space to leave. For example, cornering them up in a wall. You may look intimidating. Instead, approach people who are at the bar counter, where they can have a choice of leaving if they wish to end the conversation. If both of you like to carry on chatting, please remember to move away from the bar counter. The bartender needs to attend to other patrons.
Be relaxed and don’t have any expectations with your interactions. You can even chat up with the bartender if he/she is not busy. Bartenders are great conversationalists who have seen a lot during their nightlife stint!
If your goal is to meet the opposite gender, and you don’t even like nightlife, I suggest you skip the scene entirely. You’ll force yourself to enjoy something that you don’t, and people can sense it. In the end, you’ll be left disappointed, realising that you’ve just wasted a lot of unnecessary money and time.
Be kind to the bartenders

If you have been following my other posts, I’ve always been stressing about treating the service staff with dignity and respect.
Bartenders are not your typical “service” staff. Besides needing the dexterity to perform bar tricks, they also need to be quick-witted while interacting with patrons so that they’ll stay and have more drinks. It’s not some “blue-collared” job. It’s a job that requires the knowledge of both molecular and social science. Chances are, some of them may even be earning more money than you!
Treat them with the same respect you’ll treat a granny at the market. Don’t use your finger and signal them to come over. It’s rude! They are not your pets! Only walk up and order if you know what you want. If you’re new to alcohol, ask for recommendations. But don’t linger around the bar counter for too long if you’re still deciding. You may be blocking others from ordering.
Be friendly with your bartender. They might just come in handy when you need some introduction to your next big-ticket client or when you need a wingman or wingwoman!
Take advantage of the Happy Hour promotion!
Bars usually offer Happy Hour promotion to entice more people to swing by the bar right after work. Drinks are either usually cheaper or come at a 1-for-1 deal.
Most bars set their Happy Hours around the 5 – 8 pm stretch, though some bars may set theirs as early as 3 pm!
If you have the cash to stretch, bar hop!
Singapore’s a nightlife haven! If you and your entourage have the energy to last the entire night, go explore this paradise! Marvel at some amazing architectures these bars have, such as Atlas Bar’s Great Gatsby-like interior. You can even get a free tour of their most exquisite collections of spirits. If everyone’s still sober, hop over to Tippling Club and sample their out-of-this-world cocktails flavours that come in the forms of gummy bears and tablets!
