Top Baby Stores in Singapore

Top Baby Stores in Singapore 1

Congratulations! If you are reading this, you are probably expecting the arrival of a little one. Regardless if you are a parent-to-be, a relative, or a friend to someone who would be one in less than 9 months, retail therapy for a tiny human being is always justified. Be it essential items or products that are nice-to-have, prepare to be spoilt for choice by the endless variety of products baby stores have to offer!

Guide to buying baby items

The seemingly endless variety of baby products available can intimidating for first-time parents. It may be difficult to decide between products especially if it is your first time purchasing it. What do you look out for? How much should you spend? Is it justified to pay more for quality? How do I know that this expensive product is of good quality?

Decide on what you need

Many first-time parents fall into the trap of purchasing items they do not need or do not have a chance to utilise. Knowing you and your partner well may help you save on products that would hardly see the light of day. For example, some couples who prefer to pack light and move quick might prefer a baby carrier and may hardly choose to use a stroller. Babies quickly out grow their clothes and all you really need is three to five sets of clothes at each time before there is a need to swap them for a bigger set of clothes.

Try out the baby items at the store

Online stores have redefined the shopping experience. With a diverse variety of items and brands marked at competitive prices, literally at our finger tips. Despite the convenience of shopping all around the world from the comfort of our home, some may argue that the experience of shopping at a physical store. Some physical stores have samples of products such as baby car seats and baby carriers complete with baby dolls to provide you with the most accurate representation of how it might feel when the product is in use. Like buying a pair of shorts from a store, trying it out in person gives you the security that the product you are paying for is exactly what you want.

Read reviews on baby products

More often than not, the product you are thinking of purchasing has already been reviewed by others online. Some websites or individuals may have already compare between the products you are interested in purchasing to other products of similar specifications. Reading through the reviews on baby products online may be the best guide in helping you commit to the product that is best for your baby.

Happy shopping!

Review 1 My go-to place whether its to shop for comfy kids clothes and shoes for my own children or a gift to brighten someone’s day! Thanks team Elly for always serving with a heart! – Sherri Koh
Review 2 Always a lovely experience shopping at The Elly Store. Their products are not just beautiful to look at, but comfortable to wear – and most importantly, both the colour and sizing last and do not come off/shrink/expand in the wash! The staff is also always helpful and polite – even when the store gets busy. Would absolutely recommend shopping for your kids at The Elly Store. – Adeline Toh
Review 3 One-stop shop to get all kinds of unique Singapore-designed kid’s clothes, as well as toys, shoes and lots more. Lovely gift packaging and great service, perfect for anyone looking for something special for their loved ones. – David K

Preparing for D-day

Setting a budget

As a parent-to-be, it is normal to be overwhelmed by the number of things to purchase prior to D-day. A good place to start would be to work out a comfortable budget for you. Aiming to spend within your means would enable you to objectively decide between products and to not overburden your finances. Distinguishing between the needs from the wants can be helpful in deciding what products to purchase and to keep within the budget you have set for yourself.

Have a checklist

Drawing up a list of items in categories such as feeding, diapering, bathing, nursery, clothes, health, toys, strollers, baby carriers and car seats would allow you to systematically work through the collection of items. Experienced parents often advise that it would be wise to decide on the bigger ticketed items and work your way down to the smaller ones can help in deciding what miscellaneous items you may or may not need.

Seek advice and recommendations

Speaking to others who have young children can be useful in avoiding rookie mistakes. By gathering opinions from various individuals, you can begin to figure out what you might like to spend more on and what you may not require. If you are more of an introvert, there are a number of parents who document their personal experience on social media platforms such as blogs, Instagram and Facebook. Reading a number of these “online diaries”, you may begin to relate to the authors and identify with their preferences. You inadvertently learn from the experience of others and would be able to make informed decisions when the situation presents itself.

Get organised

Armed with a checklist of items and a bunch of recommendations from other newly-minted parents you may be keen to purchase everything on your list. Purchasing some things ahead of time such as a baby cot, mattress, diapers, diaper cream, changing mat, baby shampoo, washcloths, swaddles, long sleeved onesies for colder nights and short sleeved onesies for warmer days may be a good idea. Washing these items and packing them in a pre-determined space in the baby room may help to calm the nerves in anticipation of the baby and also reduce the number of things to do when you get home from the hospital.

However, if you feel like you have not done much in preparation, fret not! The purchase of some items can afford to be delayed until your baby is slightly older. Things like a baby carrier can be purchased much later when your baby is closer to 3 months old. Some parents even choose to leave it till much later and bring their 2-3 month old baby down to baby stores to try the sample baby carriers, just to ensure that their baby is comfortable with the carrier they have been eyeing.

Pack for the hospital

You may have already decided on which hospital you will be delivering at. Most hospitals offer tours of their maternity and labour wards to orientate expecting parents to the amenities and services available. Information about the hospital charges and what the hospital maternity packages include can be obtained from the tour as well. It is routine for the hospital to provide you with a packing list for your “go bag” when it is time. Packing for the hospital early and deciding how you might commute to the hospital from the various locations you frequent might be helpful to relieve added stress.

Plan ahead

In addition to planning up to the time you get to the hospital, it might be prudent to plan how you would manage when you get home from the hospital as well. It is commonplace for Singaporeans to engage help with the added responsibilities in caring for a newborn baby. This may come in the form of grandparents, confinement nannies or foreign domestic helpers. Having an idea of who will take care of the newborn baby, who will care for other children and still manage day to day responsibilities would be helpful. Confinement nannies are usually experienced in caring for newborn babies and can help in guiding you in doing so. Apart from giving you the confidence in bathing, changing and feeding your baby, confinement nannies also extend their responsibilities to caring for the mothers as well. Having just undergone a huge ordeal in delivering a baby, new mothers need ample rest and nutrition to recover.

Sign up for baby freebies

Everyone loves freebies! Reputable companies tend to offer tons of baby freebies that can last for quite a while. Unleash your inner aunty or uncle to register for free diapers, milk powder, skin products, wet wipes and more. Certain insurance companies also offer free basic insurance coverages. The national library board also has a free baby gift pack under their “Early Read Program” that contains not only some books to kick start an early interest in reading, but also a library card for your little one.
