What does an audiologist do?

An audiologist can treat hearing disorders for patients ranging from infants to the elderly. An audiologist can also select and fit hearing aids and other hearing devices for patients when needed. They also educate patients on how to use the hearing aid device, take proper care of the device, and the effects of noise on hearing. An audiologist can also research the causes, prevention, management, and identification of issues relating to hearing loss.

Difference between an audiologist and ENT specialists

An audiologist focuses on hearing loss, ringing in the ears, ear balance issues, and helping patients cope with hearing loss. On the other hand, ENT specialists focus on treating ear conditions such as diseases, cancer, and trauma. They deal with health problems specifically, and they do not have the same expertise as an audiologist to deal with hearing loss problems.

Hearing loss

Reasons

There are various reasons behind hearing loss, such as aging,

the buildup of earwax, and frequent exposure to loud noises. Once you are being diagnosed to have hearing loss by an audiologist, it is not reversible.

Symptoms

You should seek help from an audiologist if you experience any of the above symptoms. Do remember that hearing loss is not a problem to be taken lightly or a temporary situation.

How to prevent hearing loss

While aging-related hearing loss is not preventable, there are some steps that you can take to avoid the worsening of aging-related hearing loss and prevent noise-induced hearing loss.

The best everyday protection for your ears is to limit the duration and intensity of noise exposure. Wearing earplugs can be effective in protecting your ears from damaging noise.

If you frequently work in a noisy environment, consider going for more regular hearing tests with an audiologist to determine your hearing power and detect hearing loss early.

When to see an audiologist

You should seek help from an audiologist when you experience sudden hearing loss. A sudden hearing loss should not be taken lightly because it is not merely temporary but a signal that something underlying is amiss. Another sign that you should visit an audiologist is tinnitus, which is a persistent ringing in the ears.

How to become an audiologist

In Singapore, you will need to have a Bachelor’s degree in audiology from an overseas university or a master’s degree in audiology from the National University of Singapore or overseas universities to practice as an audiologist in Singapore.

Skills you need to become an audiologist

Problem-solving skills

As an audiologist, it is important to be equipped with good problem-solving skills because patients have problems to solve. Patients can trust an audiologist who has good problem-solving skills because they can help their hearing problems.

Communication skills

As an audiologist, being able to communicate clearly and effectively to patients is crucial. With strong communication skills, the audiologist will be able to clearly explain the problem to the patient, whether to educate them on hearing issues or to teach them how to use a hearing aid. Patients will also be able to understand the audiologist’s instructions clearly with clear communication.

Empathy

An audiologist deals with patients that experience hearing loss, which may be difficult to emphasize if they have good hearing themselves. As an audiologist, when you put yourself in the patient’s shoes and show them empathy, they will feel more at ease and comfortable with you.

Things to consider when choosing an audiologist

Location

Choosing an audiologist near your home or workplace is convenient, and it saves time between trips. Whether you need to revisit the audiologist for regular hearing checkups, purchase a hearing aid device or repair an existing hearing aid device, having an audiologist near you can help cut down transport costs as well.

Cost

Seeking help from an audiologist is not cheap, especially if they are private practitioners. It would be helpful to come up with a budget and stick to it when choosing an audiologist.

Comfortability

It is important to feel comfortable with an audiologist through the conversations or the ambience of the clinic. When you feel comfortable with an audiologist, you will feel more at ease and more willing to let the audiologist diagnose your hearing condition.

Testimonials

Before you choose an audiologist, make sure to check the testimonials of past customers to expect how your service with the particular audiologist would be like. If an audiologist has mainly positive reviews from past customers, you can be assured that your visit to that audiologist will most likely be a pleasant experience.

Conclusion

If you have experienced any symptoms of hearing loss or have sudden hearing loss, you should schedule an appointment to visit an audiologist as soon as possible. For those who work in a noisy environment, do visit an audiologist for frequent ear checkups so that if you have possible hearing loss, it can be detected early. When choosing an audiologist, it is important to consider a few factors carefully to ensure that your visit to the audiologist will be a pleasant experience and worth the time and money.
